Five Intensive 3-Week Courses Offered at COD in Summer: Short courses that cover a
semester's worth of work and last just three weeks promise a very intensive learning
experience at COD this summer. Four courses will be offered at the Palm Desert main
campus; they are Elementary Spanish, English Composition and Literature, Myth and Legend,
Public Speaking. A fifth course, African-American Literature, will be offered at Eastern
Valley Center. Students who enroll in one of these courses can earn three college credits.
All four begin May 30, after which their schedules each vary slightly, and end no later
than June 15. See the summer class schedule for specifics.
Students who sign up for Spanish 1A will meet four days a week, Tuesday through Friday the
first week, then Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Professor Frank
Attoun will instruct and says the class will be "quick, intensive and very instructive" and
would, for example, permit a student to complete 1A and enroll in Spanish 1B during the sixweek
summer session that begins on June 19. "Or you can learn Spanish just before your
exciting trip to Mexico this summer," Attoun said.
English 1B will be taught by Professor Jack Tapleshay who promises that students "will be
immersed in poetry, fiction and drama" in the literature course. He said students "should be
ready to go to work the moment they step into the classroom. Students cannot miss even one
class." Tapleshay said the intensive course is designed for "students who can focus, study and
respond in a relatively short period of time." The course meets Monday through Friday from
7:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., except the first week; no class is scheduled on Friday, June 9.
Tapleshay will also teach Myth and Legends (Eng 35) five nights a week, except for the first
week when class is in session Tuesday through Friday, from 5 to 9:15 p.m. No class is
scheduled on Friday, June 9.
Professor Gary Walker said the intensive Public Speaking (SP4) will be "three weeks of the
hardest work you'll ever love." Walker refers to it as Public Speaking Boot Camp. "You'll
start the course as a raw recruit, and finish as a polished public speaker." The course meets
from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Monday through Friday, except the first week; no class is
scheduled on Friday, June 9.
Musical Director Scott
There are 10 Hot Box
Speaking of Hot Box Dancers, the role of Adelaide – the main attraction at the Hot Box
nightclub – is played by Colleen Kelley, whose past COD performances have included Man
of La Mancha and Little Shop of Horrors. She’s one of four leads. The others are Chelsey
Clime, who won a Desert Theater League Award for her turn in the title role in last year’s
Sweet Charity; Tod Kent, Clime’s co-star in Charity; and Phil Mastrelli, who is new to
COD.
COD’s strong supporting cast includes Raymond Brinkman, Mike Hadley, Cliff Plummer,
Eric Spitz and Raul Valenzuela.
Based on Damon Runyon's short story, The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown, the musical
production of Guys and Dolls revolves around Nathan Detroit (Mastrelli), the organizer of the
oldest established permanent floating crap game in New York, who bets fellow gambler Sky
Masterson (Kent) that he can't make the next girl he sees fall in love with him. The next girl
he sees happens to be Miss Sarah Brown (Clime), a pure-at-heart Salvation Army-type
reformer, and the stage is set for a hilarious evening of complications.
Guys and Dolls opened at the 46th Street Theatre on November 24, 1950 and enjoyed a run of
1,200 performances. The original cast included Robert Alda, Vivian Blaine, Sam Levene and
Isabel Bigley. The 1955 film version featured Marlon Brando, Vivian Blaine, Frank Sinatra
and Jean Simmons. In 1976, a Broadway revival was staged with an all-black cast. The show
was revived in Las Vegas in 1982, starring Indian Wells resident and renowned singer Jack
Jones. It is currently enjoying a revival on the London stage.
Graduation Gets Too Big, New Venue Required: The number of students graduating with
associate degrees at COD has grown in recent years and the number of participants in
Commencement has also swelled -- from about 200 five years ago to more than 300 last year.
This year, some 430 graduates have signed participation forms, presenting the college with a
major venue problem.
The commencement exercises have traditionally been held at the McCallum Theatre since it
opened in the mid-1980s, and its 1,127 seats have usually been more than adequate. In recent
years, however, the number of guests each graduate could invite have been limited and tickets
have been required to get in. With 430 graduates planning to "walk" in the processional over
to the McCallum this May 26, COD was faced with the unpleasant prospect of limiting the
number of guests for each graduate... to just over one!
"It's actually about one and a quarter," said Dean John Loera, Admissions and Records, who
heads a committee that was created to find a new venue. "We didn't feel it was fair to limit
them to one guest. Many of our graduates are the first in their families to graduate from
college and many of them have large families and other loved ones who would like to attend
this event. We looked at a number of options, ranging from holding two smaller
commencements back to back in the McCallum to moving it to the Palm Springs Convention
Center or the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens. In the end, the administration felt it was
important we keep the ceremony on campus, so we've opted for Boone Field."
The athletic field, where COD teams play football and soccer, would need some enhancement
and the administration has contracted with an events firm that will bring in 1,750 chairs, some
canopy covers with misters, a stage, and a professional sound system.
The committee is hammering out details such as parking, security, first aid, water supplies,
rest rooms, traffic flow, crowd control, and a long list of other details, along with the usual
details that were decided on earlier -- such as seating arrangements, musical accompaniment,
and a list of speakers. The ceremonies start at 7 p.m.
Loera said the committee is working hard and there's a free exchange of ideas. The
commencement venue is coming together and the good news is, there will be plenty of room
for guests -- each student will be given up to four tickets and there may be a few left over.
A special feature of summer session is the addition of five highly intensive three-week
courses, each offering three full college credits. The intensive classes meet for four hours,
four days a week, and include English Composition and Literature, Public Speaking,
Sociology and Spanish. A fifth intensive class, Introduction to African-American Literature,
has been added at the EVC site. These classes start May 30.
In a collaborative effort with the Palm Desert Campus of California State University, San
Bernardino, two classes will be offered this summer for students who are accepted into the
pre-nursing program for the newly announced Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree
that will be offered at CSU in the Fall. Students can get a jump start on their undergraduate
prerequisite courses by signing up for six-week summer classes in either Chemistry or
Psychology, starting June 19. The classes are held on the COD campus.
COD is now enrolling students for both Summer and Fall (starting May 8). Class schedules
are available at the college, public libraries, city halls and chambers of commerce valleywide,
The Greatest of Problems: We have a serious problem to
confront us at the end of the school year – we have soooooo
many students that are graduating that we have to change the
venue! We have the largest graduating class this year in the
history of the College with approximately 430 graduates that
want to ‘walk’ at graduation and have their families and
supporters with them. The McCallum Theatre cannot hold
them and their guests. We are making arrangements to have
graduation on the football field. Plans are being made to
provide a great atmosphere with an appropriate size platform,
sun coverings, and even shorter speeches!
organizing this event. Championship Teams abounded with medals and awards listed later.
Everyone who completed was spectacular!
SEED - Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity: We hope a new group will
be forming this next year and you may want to be a part of it. MonthlySEED seminars lasting
approximately three hours are co-lead by members of the College of the Desert faculty and
staff who have attended leaders’ training. There is no cost to the participants. SEED is
designed to increase one’s ability to respect and recognize the plural dimensions of culture in
school curriculum, college climate and the greater community. College of the Desert was
SEEDed in 2001 and is entering its fourth year with two employee groups and a student
group. Our groups have included administrators, faculty and staff of 15 to 20 individuals
who are committed to meeting for three hours once a month during the school year. Topics
of discussion include a range of diversity and equity issues including culture and gender. The
SEED facilitators plan each seminar and include a balance of articles (non-fiction, fiction)
and poetry, interactive exercises, videos, guest speakers, and discussions. We learn from
others’ experiences and from the “textbooks of our lives”. A meal is shared at the end of
each seminar. Stayed tuned for future announcements!
Coach Carl Schroeder said Tuesday’s regional playoff was COD’s “toughest match of the
year.” Jack Hui beat the No. 1 ranked player to take over top ranking. Other players winning
in singles competition were Francis Yoshimoto (shown in photo, above, from The Desert
Sun), Stefan Feddersen, Shingo Minato, Patrick Olobo and Joao Toledo.
Young Golfers Fall Short of State: The COD men's golf team won the Foothill Conference
Title again this year, as they have every season since 1988 (19 in a row), but fell short in the
regional playoffs and failed to make the state championship round. Coach Tony Manzoni
said he was proud of his team's conference title and 19-2 record in match play throughout the
season. "We'd have liked one more shot at the State, but it wasn't meant to be," he said. "My
number one and number two golfers are freshmen and shot way over their handicaps at the
regionals. I don't think they anticipated the pressure. It was a mental thing. But they'll be back
next year and we'll have another very good team."
While the team failed to qualify for State, one player, Chad Weatherell, played well enough
at the regionals to advance as an individual competitor. But Weatherall, a sophomore from
Canada, hurt his back during the first round on Monday and, after carding a 79, withdrew
from the two-round match.
"They feel bad," Manzoni said of his young team. "But I know they'll learn from the
experience and they'll be back." COD won the state championship in 2004.
Baseball Team Ends Season in Third: COD’s much-improved baseball squad won a
doubleheader against Rio Hondo on Sunday to end their season with a 15-9 record in the
Foothill Conference, good enough for a third-place finish. The team was 20-23 overall. Mike
Marina Espejo have been named All Americans by the National Fastpitch Coaches
Association. The women are the first COD players to win All-American honors since Ashley
Swain in 2003. "It's a wonderful recongition for the kids," said Coach Shel Wellins. Sanchez
batted .453 and scored 46 runs for the Roadrunners this season. Espejo batted .377 and hit 12
doubles.
