Ludmila Zeman
Sindbad the Sailor has escaped death many times and is planning to
live the rest of his life on dry land. But the sea beckons, and he sets
out for one final adventure. As he sails from a beautiful far-off land
where people drink scented tea, a storm destroys the ship. Sindbad
finds refuge on an island, but it holds little safety for him. Ivory
traders make him their slave. It seems that he will live out his days in
servitude. But the power of love, and his compassion for a baby
elephant, give him the strength he needs for survival. His voyage offers
him the answer to life’s greatest secret, and finally he can rest.
Ludmila Zeman has retold these beloved adventures from the
Thousand and One Nights in her gorgeous trilogy, Sindbad, Sindbad in the
Land of the Giants, and Sindbad’s Secret, incorporating design details and
maps that place the stories into their historical context.
Geoff Butler
You don’t have to come from Newfoundland to appreciate it as a
unique and wonderful place – the first land to see the break of day
in North America. The sentiments in Ode to Newfoundland reflect the
peoples’ relationship with the sea, the weather, and the rugged terrain.
Written by Sir Cavendish Boyle, governor of Newfoundland from 1901
to 1904, and set to music composed by Sir C. Hubert H. Parry, Ode to
Newfoundland is a tribute to a small land with an enormous heart.
In this new book, Newfoundland-born Geoff Butler has set this wellloved
anthem to joyous paintings, and provides readers with intriguing
facts about the province: did you know, for example, that according to
the Flat Earth Society, Brimstone Head on Fogo Island, is one of the
four corners of the earth?
With the Ode’s full text and music, and with extensive notes about
Newfoundland, this informative book is one to treasure by everyone who
has been touched by the magic of The Rock.
Title Highlights
Spring has come to the little town of Chelm and everyone is busy
making things clean and fresh for Passover. At Rachel’s home, a special
gift has arrived: Bubbie from Bialystok has sent along her recipe for
Bubbie’s Own Matzo Ball Soup. Rachel’s mother is thrilled. Maybe the
fragrance of the soup will lure Elijah the Prophet to their home and
he will bestow good fortune on them.
The soup is indeed wonderful, and soon it draws the neighbors. But
none of these everyday folk could possibly be the great prophet. Or
could they? As in Rachel Captures the Moon, the solution lies in the hands
of a loving child.
A timeless lesson that the best way to reap blessings is to bestow
kindness, this is the perfect book for Passover and for the year round.
and illustrator. While maintaining his career as a lawyer, he studied at the
Ontario College of Art, the Jerusalem School of Fine Art, and with Toronto
artist Mark Thurman. Rachel’s Gift is Richard’s second book.
Praise for Rachel Captures the Moon:
“With dense, jewel-toned watercolors and colored-pencil illustrations, and
characterizations and perspectives reminiscent of Chagall and other Jewish
visual folklorists, Ungar swiftly and affectionately transports readers to a
The Tinderbox
The Quarter-Pie Window
The Sign of the Scales
Flames are bright against the night sky. Thirteen-year-old Emma
watches with horrified fascination as they consume the family’s log
cabin, leaving her and her younger brother orphaned. These three
books are set in the early 1830s. Emma’s grief and shock, and her
bravery in building a new life, are timeless.
Marianne Brandis’s vivid evocation of pioneer life in Upper Canada
– the texture of the log cabin, the sights and smells of harvest, the raw
cold of outdoor chores at dawn – has been delighting readers since the
first book was first published in 1982.
Series Highlights
• Timeless stories about growing up in a complex world, and
discovering the strength to realize one’s dreams
• Historically accurate stories bring pioneer days to life in
In Spite of Killer Bees is a novel about not giving in and not giving up.
Aggie and her two sisters have had to move to the small village that
had been their father’s childhood home. Their mother is long gone,
and their father – who’d been in and out of prison – has died.
Although the village holds little charm for the girls, they have hopes. It
seems that their late grandfather has made them heiresses.
In the small, judgmental village, Aggie must fight to keep her diminishing
family together. By refusing to abandon those she loves and
comes to love, she risks more than her happiness.
Fiction - Short Stories
Toxic Love
Linda Holeman
“[Holeman] creates characters so familiar that it’s almost impossible not to
place yourself right in the story. This is a writer who can weave such a spell
that a dilemma can become your dilemma and your gut tightens with the
stress.” – The Globe and Mail
“I think it may be the best book of the year’s books for young adults.”
– Ottawa Citizen
Toxic Love is a distinctive collection of short stories by Linda
Holeman, each exploring love in all its touching, tragic, and often
funny permutations.
In the title story “Toxic Love”, Carla is an intellectual with a stutter,
a dweeb. She’s also an incurable romantic. Feeling isolated in her
country town, she tries to dream up romances for her English
teacher, Miss Kleinfeld, and a handsome colleague. Carla is shocked
from her giggly wishful daydreams when she realizes that Miss
Kleinfeld’s love was never available. In the hilarious “Something
Fishy” the narrator is looking for some excitement in her ho-hum
suburban life, and almost without meaning to, she tells a whopper
of a lie. The excitement that follows is more than she bargained for.
First published in 1995 as Saying Good-bye, this brilliant collection
of work by Linda Holeman navigates through the landscape of adolescence
with sympathy and heart.
Linda Holeman has written short stories and poetry for adults. Her work
for young adults include the highly-acclaimed novels Promise Song, Mercy’s Birds,
Raspberry House Blues, all of which were selected for the Books for the Teen Age
list by the New York Public Library. Her latest young adult novel is Search of the
Moon King’s Daughter. Linda Holeman lives in Winnipeg. Visit her web site at
Earthly Astonishments
Marthe Jocelyn
“The protagonist is a compelling and sympathetic character with whom
children will identify. . . . the real story here is that while family isn’t always
found where it should be, it’s ok to make one’s own.”
– School Library Journal
In the late nineteenth century, in a dot of a town called Westley, lives
the smallest girl in the world. Josephine stands only twenty-two inches
high and her parents charge gawkers a penny a piece to see her – until
they realize that the headmistress of MacLaren Academy for Girls will
pay even more.
At the Academy Josephine is treated like a slave and is tormented by
the fine young ladies who attend, until she takes five gold dollars and
runs away. She finds a new life with R. J. Walters’ Museum of Earthly
Astonishments. Among the other human curiosities in the Coney
Island freak show, Josephine finds the family she has never known . . .
and dangers greater than any she’d ever dreamed.
This riveting novel of adventure and injustice, new in paperback, has
received many honors, including selection as a finalist for the Canadian
Daniel has a problem. A problem named Josephine. Josephine is
Daniel’s cat – and she has a habit of running away. In Where’s that
Cat?, Daniel is forced to search high and low for his feline friend –
exploring his neighborhood, and introducing the reader to the
people who live there.
As you might guess, Josephine gets away again in Catch that Cat!.
This time, she is loose in Daniel’s school. Daniel’s mission to catch
Josephine takes him from his classroom, through the library, and
even the girl’s washroom, to the principal’s office. His fate is sealed,
though it’s not a bad fate, after all.
Cheerful, funny illustrations accompany these wonderful stories
about a boy and his cat. These are beautiful picture books that
show that clouds really do have silver linings – or at least, schools
really do have nice principals.
Freshly packaged to entertain a new generation of readers, we
are delighted to re-introduce these two classic stories formerly published
under the titles Have You Seen Josephine? and Can You Catch
Josephine?
Praise for Can You Catch Josephine?:
“Combines story and picture so that each melts into the other…flawless
performance by cat and author/illustrator.” – Quill & Quire
