Keynotes
Human health and well-being are vital resources for a healthy
society and a sound economy. But development in this direction
requires an ecologically sound environment. At the 2010 World
Conference, we wish to pursue this insight and generate new
synergies on this basis. Reaching out beyond the health sector, we
will explore new partnerships and opportunities for collaboration
that offer win-win situations for improving health and promoting
sustainable development. Our ambitious goal is to develop viable,
solution-oriented partnerships based on the exchange of ideas,
knowledge and experience and on the effective use of resources
so as to produce sustainable changes around the world.
Dr Thomas Mattig
Director of Health Promotion Switzerland
Without doubt the IUHPE world conferences are the most
significant occasions that bring together those dedicated to health
promotion from across the globe. For newcomers and old timers
alike, these meetings every three years define the “state of the art”
in health promotion practice, research, and theory.
Summary
The 20th IUHPE 1 World Conference on Health Promotion will take place in Geneva from
11 to 15 July 2010. This high-profile event is being organised by Health Promotion
Switzerland in collaboration with various partners under the auspices of the IUHPE. This will
be the first time that the meeting has been held in Switzerland.
The theme of the four-day event is “Health, Equity and Sustainable Development”.
Between 2,000 and 2,500 people from some 90 countries are expected to attend. The
participants will comprise policymakers, leading scientists, experts, researchers and
practitioners from the private sector, the public sector/authorities, government-linked
networks and institutions, universities, NGOs and the media.
They will be exploring the issues of health, equity and sustainable development with the aim
of identifying and initiating solutions for a healthier and more equitable world. The four-day
meeting provides a platform for diverse exchanges, including presentations by renowned
international authorities and keynote speakers from the political, business and scientific
spheres.
World Conference embedded in the midterm initiative healthy 3
Healthy 3 is a new initiative launched by Health Promotion Switzerland which aims to strive for
joint efforts in promoting healthy people in healthy societies on a healthy planet.
The initiative focuses on issues relevant to the health
and wellbeing of present and future generations. The
healthy 3 initiative systematically identifies and enables
the use of synergies between the efforts in the fields of
sustainable development and health promotion.
As food and its production is one of the key cross-over
points between sustainable development and healthy
living, a White Paper with the working title “Food: a
prism of present and future challenges for sustainable
development and health promotion” is being developed
by an Interdisciplinary Think-Tank (ITT), a group of 25 thought leaders, scientists and experts
from corporate, public and non-governmental sectors with pre-defined competences and
institutional backgrounds. (list of think-tank members available on demand)
The 20th World Conference on Health Promotion is the major milestone during the first
phase (2009/2010) of the healthy 3 process. At the World Conference the abovementioned
White Paper will be presented and discussed during one of the plenary sessions indicated in
the program as Platform for Opinion Leaders (POL). The 4 – 5 panellists of this “diversified”
POL will be CEOs/Chairmen and ministers, prominent experts from science and/or civil
society organizations. The main expectation from this POL is to challenge recommendations
elaborated by the ITT in their White Paper, to discuss the outreach and the initiation of joint
The importance of health promotion
Health is a basic human need. It is fundamental to the successful functioning of individuals
and of societies. Health promotion aims to empower people to control their own health by
gaining control over the underlying factors that influence health. The main determinants of
health are people’s cultural, social, economic and environmental living conditions, and the
social and personal behaviours that are strongly influenced by those conditions.
Consequently, a key characteristic of health promotion is a wide range of complementary
actions at the individual, group, community and macro levels. Its core activities include health
education and advocacy for policies in all relevant sectors. The effectiveness of these
activities is underpinned by collaboration and alliance building among different sectors of
society, applied research to improve the quality and effectiveness of health promotion, and
training practitioners to help them acquire skills to engage effectively in health promotion
work.
The Ottawa Charter of 1986 laid a solid foundation for health promotion that has stood the
test of time. In recent decades health promotion has proven to be an effective, efficient
means to improve the health of populations. The IUHPE and the broader health promotion
field have demonstrated and documented the significant improvements in the health and
well-being of populations that can be brought about through planned social change. In many
countries there have been significant reductions in premature morbidity and mortality from
diseases as well as improvements in health literacy due to health promotion. Also at the local
level there is extensive evidence that health promotion works. As we move forward in the 21 st
century, health promotion researchers, practitioners and policy-makers build on the
knowledge about effective health promotion in different parts of the world.
Background
Every three years, the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE)
holds a global conference that has become the most important gathering of health
promotion experts and exponents worldwide. In 2010, this event will bring together key
representatives of health promotion from across the globe as well as development experts to
discuss health, equity and sustainable development
In 2010, the conference will be held in Switzerland for the first time in the organisation’s more
than 50-year history. Health Promotion Switzerland is organising this major event on behalf
of the IUHPE and other partners, and is expecting between 2’000 and 2,500 delegates to
explore health, equity and sustainable development issues over a 4-day period.
What is the rationale for this event?
The pre-requisites for health – peace, shelter, food, income, a stable ecosystem, sustainable
resources, social justice and equity – remain unchallenged. Their presence or absence
continues to determine why some of the world’s people are healthy and others are not. While
health and social inequalities have existed for as long as human civilisation, there are
disparities within and across countries that persist despite the existence of the wealth and
technological means to address them. It is widely held that these inequalities have increased
as an outcome of unchecked population growth, global economic integration, accelerated
urbanisation, ecological disruption, and market-based reform policies. These trends
exacerbate the systematic and deeply rooted discrimination based on gender, class, religion,
ethnicity or race that has a profound negative impact on health and well-being.
The burden of poor health that results from this unequal distribution of societies’ resources
continues to fall disproportionately on the most vulnerable population groups in many
countries. Combined with social and economic insecurity this is rapidly translating into an
6
increasing gap between rich and poor within all countries in access to and application of the
resources necessary for health.
Finally worldwide, environmental threats and competition for resources are eroding solidarity
and exacerbating social inequalities.
Against this background, sustainable improvement of health and well-being requires, above
all, strengthened and expanded partnerships that go beyond the health sector. The 20th
IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion in Geneva will examine ways of achieving
this goal through joint action.
How can health and equity be promoted in the context of sustainable development?
This question will be discussed at the 2010 World Conference in Geneva. The meeting will
offer a platform for interdisciplinary exchanges, new partnerships and sustainable results.
The discussions will focus on approaches and solutions to promote healthy people in
healthy societies on a healthy planet.
Our themes
In a globalised world, the dynamics of modernisation and urbanisation pose major challenges
for ecological sustainability and equitable, sustainable health development. Environmental
threats and competition for resources are eroding social solidarity and exacerbating existing
social inequalities. Against this background, we will discuss the direct and indirect links
between the health of the natural and human environment and the interactions
between social stability, sustainable growth and healthy life. A lifestyle of health and
sustainability results from the insight that the quality of human life requires an intact planet.
The sustainable improvement of health and well-being therefore calls for strengthened and
expanded partnerships going beyond the health sector, skilled advocacy, and evidence
based and ethically sound practice and policy. The 20th IUHPE World Conference on Health
Promotion will examine ways to achieve joint efforts to promote healthy people in healthy
communities on a healthy planet
At the conference, the following four core challenges are to be addressed:
Territorial change and urbanisation
Social and cultural change
Environmental change
Global economic change
