• Four sheets of drawing paper size A3.
• Drawing instruments
• This paper has one compulsory question.
• This paper is to be issued to the candidates 30 minutes before the examination starts.
• The candidates are advised to spend this time understanding the design problem and planning the work
on one of the drawing papers provided.

indicated and no questions are missing.
DESIGN PROBLEM (40 MARKS)
People on wheel chairs normally seek assistance from members of the public to board or
alight from a bus.
Design a device that can be fitted at the door of a bus to enable people on wheel chairs to
board or alight with minimum assistance.
The design should include the following considerations:
1. It should be part of the bus but should not occupy the passenger space.
2. It should not protrude beyond the body of the bus when not in use.
3. It should allow for safe self-wheeling in and out of the bus.
Requirements:
(a) Make rough sketches of two possible designs.
(6mks)
(b) Select one of the designs in (a) above and make a refined pictorial sketch and label the main
parts.
(16mks)
(c) Make detailed exploded sketches of the working mechanisms used in each of the considerations
above.
(12mks)
(d) (i) Name three different materials used in the design.
(ii) State where each material is used.
(3mks)
(e) List two methods of joining the parts of the device and state where each method is applied.(3mks)
