About This Guide 


The Prestack Seismic Interpretation & Processing 2012.1 Installation Guide provides 

step-by-step instructions for installing the Prestack Seismic Interpretation & 

Processing 2012.1 plug-ins for Petrel. 

The PSI installation files contain three packages for installation: 

• PSI - Visualize 

• PSI - Interpret 

• PSI - Process 

The installation process has three stages: 

• PSI license acquisition 

• Petrel* 2012.1 installation 

• PSI 2012.1 installation 

Before You Install 

PSI 2012.1 

Before you begin to install the Prestack Seismic Interpretation & Processing 2012.1 

plug-ins: 

• Review all system requirements for PSI. 

• Check that the specifications of the computer are sufficient to ensure the highestquality 

user experience of the application. 

• Ensure that Petrel 2012.1 is installed on your system.

WesternGeco tests hardware from different vendors. Table 1 lists the hardware 

used in the PSI 2012.1 commercialization cycle. These hardware units are 

tested, not certified. WesternGeco cannot foresee all issues related to the hardware 

we test. Problems outside WesternGeco control such as driver and BIOS bugs and 

operating system limitations may affect the user experience. (For detailed 

information, please visit the respective vendor sites.)

Software 

Compatibility 

Prestack Seismic Interpretation & Processing 2012.1 is compatible with Petrel 

2012.1. 

Operating Systems 

PSI 2012.1 is only supported on Microsoft Windows Vista Professional (64-bit) or 

Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-bit) operating systems. 

Processors 

Processor speed is important for large calculation tasks such as volume size, seismic 

attribute generation, property modeling, and upscaling. 

The minimum requirement for a processor might be adequate for simple PSI usage, 

but we recommend using the highest PC configuration available for maximum 

performance. PSI does not currently fully utilize multiprocessors, but there are 

advantages to using multiple core machines. 

A 64-bit processor is needed to run a Windows Vista or Windows 7 64-bit operating 

system. Intel ® Xeon ® processors and AMD ® Opteron ® processors are suitable for a 

64-bit system.

Warning: If you attempt to run this software using a 32-bit processor or 

operating system, an error message appears and the software 

terminates. 

Memory (RAM) and 

Storage 

The total system memory must be greater than the memory used by the application. 

This ensures that your operating system has dedicated RAM so that you do not have 

to use your page file (disk memory).

Important: No less than a minimum 48 GB system is recommended. 

Graphics Cards 

Choosing the right graphics card optimizes PSI 2012.1 performance. Low-end and 

high-end graphics cards perform substantially differently when using large 3D grids 

or when performing seismic volume rendering. Graphics card performance is 

dependent on several factors that are outside the control of WesternGeco, such as 

corporate PC operating system images, drivers, and board manufacturers. 

For best performance, use a high-end graphics card and two good monitors. 

Your graphics card should also 

• run Pixel Shader 2.0 or later 

• be OpenGL ® compatible 

• be CUDA enabled (for more information, refer to the CUDA GPUs page on the 

NVIDIA Web site at http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_gpus.html). 




The following graphic cards were tested by WesternGeco for PSI 2012.1: 

• NVIDIA Quadro 5000 

• NVIDIA Quadro 6000 

WesternGeco does not recommend integrated graphics cards with no dedicated 

RAM, as they reduce the memory available for PSI and the operating system.

Note: NVIDIA SLI® technology currently does not add any benefit to PSI. 

However, it might be helpful with large high-resolution monitors such as 

30-inch LCD monitors.

Valid licenses are required to run PSI 2012.1.

• through your WesternGeco software sales representative 

You will also need: 

• A FLEXnet ® 11.6 network license to use PSI both on a network and with a 

dongle on a local desktop or laptop computer. The license is run on a server 

configured by your system administrator or configured locally on your system. 

• An OmegaConnect license to import DIO files and to support data exchange 

with Omega*. The license can be obtained free of charge from the Ocean Store 

(OCEAN_SLB_WG_PSVIEW). 

• A Model Property Viewer license to display existing volcan velocity models in 

the 3D Window if Seismic Velocity Modeling (SVM) is also installed. The license 

can be obtained from the Ocean Store (OCEAN_SLB_WG_PROPVIEW). (This 

license is not otherwise needed for PSI.)

Note: PSI 2012.1 does not require an Omega software license, only an 

OmegaConnect license.

Note: A dongle is a hardware key, also known as a “software protection key” that 

controls the access and expiration dates of software modules.

7 Select the check box to accept the terms and conditions and click Next if 

you are in agreement.

Important: Please read the terms and conditions carefully to ensure your

8 Enter your Dongle ID, select or enter an address, and click Next.

Important: You do not have to enter your dongle ID during this step. However, 

without your dongle ID, you will not be able to use the PSI plug-ins. 

If you do not enter your dongle ID, a dialog box opens with the 

message that a dongle ID is required to obtain the necessary 

licenses. 

9 Click Submit to process your order. 

You will receive a confirmation e-mail that provides you with a link to download 

the PSI plug-in software and Installer. 



Installation 


This section guides you through installation of PSI 2012.1.

Note: The troubleshooting FAQ section of this document answers some common 

questions and may help resolve issues without having to contact Support. 

Please refer to this section in case of any error messages during 

installation. 

Preinstallation 

Requirements 

Petrel 2012.1 must be installed and configured on your computer before starting the 

PSI 2012.1 installation. For more information, refer to the Petrel 2012.1 Installation 

Guide or contact Petrel support at https://support.slb.com. 

Access to Petrel support and Petrel online help can also be found through the Help 

dropdown menu on the Petrel menu bar.

Note: PSI 2012.1 is designed to function with Petrel 2012.1 only.

Important: You must perform a complete installation of Petrel 2012.1. 

Installing PSI 

To install PSI 2012.1, follow the instructions provided in the PSI Installer. 

• Access to the PSI Installer is via the link in the e-mail you receive confirming your 

purchase of PSI 2012.1 from the Ocean Store. 

• Download the PSI plug-in software from the link provided in your order 

confirmation e-mail and follow the instructions for installation. 

The Installer requires administrator access to your computer. 

If the current login does not have system administrator access, log off and log in 

again as Administrator.

Note: If you purchased PSI 2012.1 from your WesternGeco sales representative, 

the PSI Installer will be on the installation DVD. The DVD also contains 

OmegaConnect, the PSI plug-ins, and simple on-screen installation 

instructions.

Warning: If Petrel 2012.1 is not installed on your computer, an error message 

displays and the Installer exits. 

The installation file for PSI (PSI_2012_1_64_Setup_Release.exe), must be 

accessible on the workstation where the installation is to be performed. 

1 Launch the installation by double-clicking on the installation file name.

Important: All three components shown in the window are required to run PSI.

2 Click Install. 

The installation process begins. Installation of the three components is 

performed in sequence.

Note: The time needed for installation will vary depending on the location of the 

installation file. 




When the installation of all three components is complete, a dialog box will 

prompt you to restart your system.

Important: You must restart your computer to activate the new system settings 

and test PSI to ensure that the system is configured for maximum 

performance. 

3 Click Yes. 

4 When your system restarts, a final message window will display. Click OK.

Congratulations. You have successfully installed Prestack Seismic Interpretation & 

Processing 2012.1 and are now ready to use the software. 



FAQ Troubleshooting 


Q: Does the Installer run on a 32-bit machine? 

A: No. If the Installer is run on a 32-bit machine, an incompatibility error message 

will appear and the software will exit. 

Q: Does the Installer run on a Windows XP 64-bit machine? 

A: No. If the Installer is run on a Windows XP-64 bit machine, an incompatibility 

error message will appear and the software will exit. 

Q: Does the Installer run under user privileges (Microsoft ® Windows ® )? 

A: No. If the Installer is run under user privileges, an error message will appear and 

the software will exit. 

Q: Is it OK to uninstall PSI if Petrel has already been uninstalled? 

A: No. The user should uninstall PSI before uninstalling Petrel. 

Q: Who can I contact for installation support? 

A: If you have any issues with the PSI installation, please contact https:// 

support.slb.com. 

Q: Where on the system is PSI installed? Can the installation path be 

modified? 

A: PSI will automatically install in the default folder under Petrel. This path is 

displayed on the Welcome screen with the welcome message. You cannot change 

the installation path. 

Q: How do I uninstall PSI? 

A: To uninstall PSI, choose one of the two following options: 

Option 1 

1 Select Start Program->Control Panel->Add/Remove programs: 

2 From the program list 

a. select Schlumberger Prestack Seismic Interpretation 2012.1 (64- 

Bit). 

b. Select Uninstall. 

c. repeat the same steps to uninstall Schlumberger Omega Connect 

2012.1 (64-Bit) and Schlumberger Structural Framework 

Extensions. 

PSI 2012.1 is now uninstalled. 

Option 2 

1 Select Start Program->Control Panel->Add/Remove programs: 

2 From the program list, select Petrel 2012 Suite. 

3 Click Uninstall. 

4 Use the Petrel 2012 Suite installation wizard to remove ALL Ocean plug-ins 

from your installation. 

The wizard first removes Ocean Plug-ins before removing Petrel from the 

system. 




This option can be used to perform the uninstall in a single process. The 

uninstallation process can be halted after the plug-ins are removed, leaving 

Petrel intact.
