Fall Cleaning
The church building received
a deep cleaning on Tuesday,
October 23 thanks to our
faithful ladies and their willing
hearts. In addition to cleaning,
the ladies boxed up books from
the Lending Library in preparation
for the painting and carpet
installation.
The next cleaning morning
is set for February 26, when we
will clear out the last of the construction
dust from the Equip
Project.
The Lending Library was
painted and carpeted this
week and staining/painting
has begun in the auditorium.
The Equip Project continues
on schedule. Please pray for the
work as we enter the final stages
of remodelling.

Hospitalized. Roger Potthoff
was a patient at Bryan/LGH
East Hospital.
Thank You from the Jordison
family: Our deepest thanks to
everyone at Indian Hills for all
the effort and work that went
into John Jordison’s funeral
service. Thank you also so
much for all the prayers during
this time. Praise to the Lord
for His salvation and His gospel
going out at the funeral! Thank
you all again for everything you
have done during this time!
We are so very blessed to be
surrounded by such a body.
Thank you!
Thank You. I wanted to give
a big thank you to the food
service committee members
of IHCC. This past month, we
have had several members of
our body go home to be with
the Lord, and the faithfulness
of this group was extremely evident.
We served five funerals,
and several other regular meals
to members of the body. This
couldn’t have happened without
the service of this group.
I believe almost everyone that
provides meals for food service
did so this last month and several
people more than once! I
also want to recognize the hard
work of Sharol Starr, Melissa
Glenn and Kari McGrew who
called everyone for these funerals.
I appreciate your service
too.—Vanessa Riekenberg
Thank You. I want to thank all
who supported us through the
death of my parents, Charles
and Vivian Patterson. Special
thanks to Pastor Eddie for the
services and to the Food Committee
for the wonderful food.
Thank you to the body for the
many cards and for your attendance
at the funerals. Love—
Jack and Patti McGovern
Thank You. The family of Alberta
Siemens wants to thank
Pastor Eddie for sharing the
good news of the gospel at our
Mother/Grandmother’s memorial
service and a thank-you as
well to the food committee for
the delicious lunch that was
served. What a blessing!
Are you going to the next
Husker home game? Why not
hand out some tracts on your
way? There are two ways to be
involved in Game Day Evangelism.
1. If you going to the game: get
tracts from church and give
them out on your way to the
game.
2. If you’re not going to the
game: meet two hours prior to
kickoff at 2025 Pepper Ave to
head to the stadium and pass
out tracts.
We do this for every home
Weather Closings
As winter storms move in, Greg
Rugh and Kevin Wheat will try
to keep abreast of the weather
and road conditions. Weather
forecasting is tricky—even the
professionals don’t always get it
right—but Greg and Kevin will
try their best to make sure we
are not driving out to church
when it would be best to stay
home.
Of course, each of us must use
good judgment with the weather,
drive safely, pray and watch
out for the other guy! Church
SUNDAY MORNING
Children’s
Ministry
Our kindergarten through fifth
grade students are studying the
same Scripture each week.
Sunday School
Our children studied Luke
16:19–31 and learned about the
rich man and Lazarus.
Children’s Church
Our children studied 1 Samuel
8–12 and learned about Israel
rejecting God as King. The core
truth we hope our students
came away with is that they are
not to be self-ruled, but are to
submit to God, who is King.
Parental
Reinforcement
As you talk with your children,
be sure to ask them about what
they learned today in Sunday
School and Children’s Church.
It will be good for them to
review the truths they studied
and it will stretch their memories
as they verbalize the biblical
account and principle they
learned.
Girls of Grace Fall Retreat
by Nancy Butterfield
What is the single most
important message for a young
girl to know?
How to be saved of course!
The goal of the Fall Retreat was
to share the Gospel message
as many times in a 14-hour
time period as possible. As the
leaders prayed about their Bible
lessons, in addition to sharing
how to have faith in Jesus, they
challenged the girls to consider
if they are truly saved or just
saying the right answers. In
essence, is your faith real? You
may look good on the outside,
but what is going on inside?
Chris Thomas reminded the
girls that God looks at the heart;
He knows who you really are.
Did we have fun? Absolutely!
We ate pizza, (ran in the
gym) listened to Bible lessons,
made duct tape creations, crafted
fancy headbands, decorated
sugar cookies, (to give away)
made exquisite bookmark clips,
listened to Bible lessons, (ran in
the gym) did a cleaning service
project, (ran in the gym) played
balloon and hula hoop games,
(screamed a lot!) had a snack,
played board games, prayed,
went to bed, (some slept) got up,
cleaned our
rooms, put
chairs away,
(ran in the
gym) tidied
up the areas
we used,
had a devotional,
ate
breakfast,
(ran in the
gym some
more) and
headed for
home.
Gil’s Latest Book
Survey of Genesis
Genesis is unique as the
only Book of the Bible to portray
God’s creation of the universe and
mankind. Truths gleaned from the
creation account prove:
* God is the sovereign creator
and designer of all that exists
* God is omnipotent
* God has a purpose for man
* God is distinct and separate
from creation, yet He is very
much involved in His creation
and in the affairs of man
Gil points out how evolution
is an attack on the very character
of God. Through careful study of
the Scriptures, he shows that God’s
Word leaves no room for evolution
or any other alternative explanation
of the world’s or man’s existence.
Genesis clearly shows that
God spoke and the world came
into existence.
If the Book of Genesis was not
in the Bible, it would be impossible
to comprehend most of the rest of
Scripture. It is a foundational book
that must be clearly understood
and accurately interpreted for the
rest of the Bible to be correctly understood.
In addition to creation,
this book reveals the fall of man;
the judgment of the worldwide
flood in the days of Noah; the dividing
of the world into nationalities,
races, and different languages;
and the selection of Abraham and
his descendants as the nation in
which God would focus His plan of
salvation. Genesis also shows how
many of the nations (in particular
those who have dealings with
Israel) came into existence.
Last but not least, Rugh highlights
God’s purposes for creating
man. As the crowning achievement
of God’s creation, man is God’s
personal agent and reflection of
His image. Throughout the historical
account revealed in Genesis,
God’s will is accomplished as He
works in and through mankind.
This inspirational survey of Genesis
will benefit everyone, from
layperson to serious Bible student.
Pre-ordered copies of Survey of
Genesis are available at Sound
Words. Stop by Sound Words if
you would like to pre-order a copy
from the next printing. Cost is
$4.99.
Two Great Tragedies by Gil Rugh
There are two great tragedies
which should concern us.
The first tragedy is that there are
people who live their lives in the
confines of the physical. They
have no relationship with God
through faith in Jesus Christ.
Their lives are characterized
only by emptiness and futility.
I often wonder what drives
the unbeliever. How does he get
up and face the day? How futile
it is to invest one’s life only in
the physical, which is temporary
and pointless. The ultimate
tragedy in this situation is that
after this life, there is nothing
but separation from God for all
eternity.
The second tragedy is that
there are people who know
Jesus Christ as Savior, but are
absorbed in this world’s system.
They lose sight of who they are
and what they are all about.
It is easy to be just as concerned
about security in this
life as the unbeliever, and to be
just as worried about the course
of events in this life as the one
without Christ. We must stop
and ask ourselves, “What is my
life all about?”
Believers are privileged to
invest in eternity. Keeping that
perspective in mind will influence
my faithful service to Jesus
Christ. That does not mean,
however, that I
do not need a
job to support
my family.
It also does
not mean that
I cannot have
a nice house or
Gil Rugh
other nice
things, but that is not what life
is all about. We need to be like
the Apostle Paul and say, “I have
learned to live with much; I
have learned to live with nothing.
I have learned to be content
in whatever circumstances I
am.”
Jesus said that even when
a man is rich, his life does not
consist of the abundance of his
possessions. That is not what life
is all about. We need to invest
our lives, every moment of every
day, in earnest anticipation of
seeing Jesus Christ face to face.
We are now one week closer
to that event than we were last
week at this time. Have we been
faithfully investing our lives in
that which counts for all eternity?
Biblical Issues in our Contemporary World
Lands of the Reformation By Donald Goertzen
Martin Luther struggled for a
decade trying to secure eternal life
and be spared the great judgment
of God. He punished himself and
performed better works than any
other monk but still to no avail.
Finally, it was the Scriptures that
spoke to him in an Old Testament
passage quoted in Romans 1:17:
“The just shall live by faith.” Once
this truth settled on his soul, he
became a transformed man.
It is easy to make a comparison
with the changes we see in the
Apostle Paul at his conversion and
in the way Luther also took up his
life task assigned to him by the
Lord.
Armed with truth, Luther
in a couple of years takes on the
corrupted practices of the Roman
Catholic Church. Even he is
surprised as he later acknowledges,
that he had the courage to nail the
95 Theses to the door at the College
Church at Wittenberg. The
firestorm that ensued would have
been his end were it not for the
protection that God provided in
many ways. Luther did not intend
to “start” the protestant church but
that was the result of his small but
courageous protest against corruption
in the Church.
In the absence of a strong central
government, after the fall of the
Roman Empire, the Roman Church
took on the role of a central government.
The grip of the Roman church
was enormous and needed enormous
amounts of money. Tithes
(actually taxes) and gifts were not
enough to satisfy either the needs
of the government or the greed of
the Popes. The money collected for
the Church by the bishops made
these seats (bishoprics) valuable
since they kept a part of the funds.
These bishopric seats were sold to
the highest bidder irrespective of
any spirituality, only to generate
the most revenue for the Roman
Church.
These revenues were further
increased by the selling of indulgences,
a “get out of Hell” for
a price. Again these funds were
harvested and a percentage was
kept by the Bishop making the
seat very valuable but subject to
extreme corruption. This was the
condition of the Church at the time
of Luther. He was not the only one
to protest these perversions but he
did take courageous steps to point
them out. In a matter of weeks the
whole Holy Roman Empire was
resonating with the call to reform
the Church.
We begin sharply at 7 p.m. and
end at 8 p.m. We have cookies and
coffee to sweeten and warm our fellowship.
Come early for a good seat
so we can be ready for the lesson.
Donald Goertzen is the teacher
and illustrated presenter. All are
welcome; we meet in Room 1414 of
the Bible Learning Center.
