Indian Hills Community Church Systematically Teaching the Word
July 5, 2009
A warm welcome to you, loved ones,
this first Sunday of July. We are glad you
have chosen to worship with us today
and pray that our time together will be
used of God to mold each one to the
likeness of His Son.
Children’s Teachers’
Workshop
Duane Nelsen and Jason Vallicott
will be presenting a workshop for
teachers today at 4:30 p.m. in the chapel.
This session will be beneficial for
anyone interested in teaching youth,
whether it’s in a formal setting like
Sunday school or more informal, like VBS.
Those who have not taught before
will learn how to interact with kids and
design an age-appropriate lesson. Those
who have been teaching for years are
likely to pick up a few pointers as well.
The workshop is one hour long.
Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School is just two
weeks away and many workers are still
needed. If you would like to help with
recreation, crafts, singing, snacks or
teaching, please contact Duane Nelsen at
483-4541. Helpers are needed in all areas.
Spiritual Gifts
If you are not involved in the
ministry at a level you know you should
be serving, here are some suggestions on
how to get started.
Look around for something that
ought to be done. Don’t limit your
investigation to your ability, just find
something that needs improvement.
Remember, this is not finding something
for someone else to do—but something
you could do.
Ask God to show you how you may be
used to meet that need. You may feel
inadequate or may not have the time to
do it. However, if God wants you to do it
through Him, you will find a way to
accomplish the job.
If you still can’t figure out what to do:
Contact the person in charge of a
particular area and offer yourself as a
helper. Then, pitch in and work in the
area. If you get into an area that is not
right, try another area until you find the
area of service that is right for you.
As you look for a place to use your
gifts, be careful about taking on too
much responsibility. God prepares His
children for His work step by step, and if
you have not matured to the level needed
for a particular service, you will be
frustrated and ultimately unable to serve
well.
A good place to start is to do what is
at hand. Pick something that won’t be
overwhelming, like preparing a meal.
Then put it in the freezer, call Vanessa
Riekenberg and let her know you have a
meal ready for the next time one is
needed. If meals aren’t your thing, call
Marcia McClurg and offer to vacuum a
classroom once every five weeks.
Wherever you choose to serve, do
your job well and do it faithfully. Church
workers are always looking for faithful
servants, those who will “do what they
said they would do.”
Being faithful with the little jobs is
crucial. Remember the master who said,
“You were faithful with a few things, I
will put you in charge of many things;
enter into the joy of your master” (Matt.
25:21). The same principle applies to the
use of our spiritual gifts.
Preserving & Providing Access to Systematic Bible Teaching
Sean O’Neal by Gale Engle
Over the last 40 years, our senior
pastor, Gil Rugh, has amassed a large
body of Bible study materials. We
have been privileged to study entire
Books of the Bible verse-by-verse,
and have prospered from tapes, video
tapes, study guides and booklets.
The problem, however, is that as
technology advances, the methods
used to record and distribute these
messages becomes obsolete.
For example, Gil’s messages
were originally taped on reel to reel.
Some of our younger members have
never even seen a reel to reel, but at
one time it was the best way to
record, and was considered state of
the art.
Cassette tapes served us well for
three decades and Sound Words was
known as the tape library. Now cds
and mp3s are state of the art and
cassette tapes are considered dinosaurs.
In five, ten or 15 years, cassette
players will not only be obsolete,
they will not be available. We’ll still
have the tapes, but people won’t have
any way of listening to them. Our
dilemma is that two-thirds of Gil’s
messages are currently available only
on cassette tape. Yikes!
Technology has also affected our
published materials. Messages were
originally transcribed on a typewriter,
edited and then re-keyed on the
typesetter. When our typesetter
crashed we moved into the computer
age. Fortunately all our books have
been re-keyed and are saved on the
computer. However, many sermons
exist only on a typed page, which
means they can’t be placed on the
internet or distributed except by hard
copy—not very user friendly.
Our audio, video and published
materials exist in a variety of formats
in an age where everything is going
digital. It is easy to see that in the
span of a few years, our recorded and
printed materials from the past 40
years could all be lost.
Sean, Shannon and Piper O’Neal
By God’s grace, the leadership at
Indian Hills puts a premium on the
careful study and preaching of the
Scriptures. The elders’ desire is to
preserve the verse-by-verse teaching
of the Word, not just for our immediate
use, but for future generations.
The elders also determined that if the
necessary steps are not taken now,
we will face the possibility of losing
access to this teaching treasure chest
in a matter of years.
To preserve the systematic
teaching of the Word for future
generations, Sean O’Neal has been
retained. Sean’s first challenge has
been to find everything. That is not as
easy as it sounds. Over the years
things get borrowed, misplaced or lost,
so collecting everything is a monumental
task in itself.
Sean will organize Gil’s messages
and catalog every sermon he has
preached at The Hills. Older messages
saved on reel to reel or cassette
tape will be recorded on the computer
so cds can be made. This too is not as
easy as it sounds since each message
must be recorded in real time. With
nearly 3,000 sermons to record, that’s
180,000 hours—a lot of time.
The completed collection will then
be made available on the internet. The
end result will be that people around
the world will have access to systematic
teaching from the Word—
everything Gil has preached the last
40 years.
Sean learned about long-term
preservation of unique materials while
working at Grace to You. He was
responsible for the care and preservation
of John MacArthur’s teaching
materials, which included: how they
are organized; how they are stored;
and how they are preserved for the
future.
Sean and his wife, Shannon,
moved back to Lincoln in August,
2008, and they are the parents of fivemonth-old
Piper.
Although Sean spent his first
years of life in the IHCC nursery and
Sunday school classes, he says, “I
grew up as a Voss kid—just shy of
being a military brat,”
As a Voss kid, Sean saw towns
bigger than Lincoln without a good
church. “There are faithful believers
in those towns, but their best hope is
to live off the Bible teachers on the
radio and material on the internet.
That is their Bible teaching anchor.”
Sean graduated from California
State with a BA in History and he is
working on his Master’s Degree in
History. If you would like to help with
preserving Gil’s Bible teaching
materials, e-mail Sean at
Missionaries to the Philippines
Alissa Goodding and Lindsey
Powell are currently in the Philippines,
ministering in the city of Los Banos,
which is about the
size of Lincoln.
Alissa and Lindsey
are members of the
Alpha Omega
group. The following
excerpt is from
a recent e-mail:
Hello everyone!
We arrived
safely and spent a little time walking
around, dodging people, trikes and
cars. You learn to
weave your way
through the
masses. We rode
in a trike (motorcycle
with side
car) and almost
died a few times.
Lindsey Powell
Alissa Goodding
Thanks for your
prayers!
On Saturdays we have a music
ministry where kids come to learn
guitar, bass, drums, and singing. Our
first one was this week and the kids
loved it!
We taught voice lessons and got
to share the gospel multiple times with
our group by explaining the words of
the songs! We taught them the actions
to waves of mercy and they absolutely
loved it!
On Sundays we have a morning
prayer meeting and then tutor some
girls from Laos who know no Tagalog
(one of the major languages spoken in
the Philippines) and limited English.
That was a huge challenge but we got
to share the gospel with them.
We help with a Bible study for the
kids from the slum area and then feed
the kids. Tutoring is offered for all the
ages and some of the girls are
becoming really dear to us.
After the high school ministry we
either do street evangelism to the
college students or meet with girls to
disciple them or do Bible studies.
We have done a few Bible studies
with girls, which was basically sharing
the gospel and we encouraged some
other girls in their walk with God. We
have met many believers with many
amazing stories and lots of wisdom.
God has been showing us that the
Christian life is the same everywhere.
We have been learning that it is not
the location that causes distractions
but the internal things that get our
focus off.
There are a few things that have
been very interesting here. The bugs
are five times bigger than we have
ever seen. Consider a spider the size
of a hand and a beetle that fills your
palm. One such beetle landed in
Lindsey’s hair last night and caused
quite a commotion.
Lizards are common household
residents and we have one that hangs
out in our room.
We visited the open market the
other day and there are many vendors
with vegetable, fruit, and meat. It is
not uncommon to see live fish flopping
on the table and a whole pig’s head
hanging up.
We love you all and appreciate
your prayers. Keep serving hard
wherever God has you!
