Campers interacted with a variety of animals during six week-long camp sessions in July and August designed to educate children on the proper care of companion animals and to foster compassion for all living things. s 101 Dog Lovers This May, the J*Company Youth Theatre, a program of the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center, JACOBS FAMILY CAMPUS, ran its production of DISNEY’S 101 DALMATIANS Kids. In a partnership with the San Diego Humane Society, a public service slideshow was run prior to each performance, and mobile adoptions were held on-site for two performances. Prior to the production, the 101-member cast toured the Humane Society facility and received information about pet care, adoption, and the prevention of animal cruelty and neglect. Volunteer Bob Nouchie celebrates with Humane Society staff at this year’s Volunteer Recognition Event, “A Night of Shining Stars.” Dressed as Hollywood’s best, volunteers enjoyed the spotlight while receiving awards for their years of service and outstanding dedication to helping animals and people alike. Investigations officers also visited the fair’s Agri-Fair and livestock barns to ensure that all animals were being treated humanely and in accordance with animal welfare laws. s Head of the Class Noushin Shoaee and Maddie learn the basics of positive reinforcement training techniques and practice good doggy behaviors at a Head Start training class. Head Start classes are available for any age dog on both weekdays and weekends and offer training on loose leashing walking, coming when called, greeting without jumping and much more. Photo: Candice Eley s Healthy, Happy, and Homeward Bound Brady came to the Humane Society as a puppy with a serious fracture of his left hind leg. Veterinary staff performed specialized surgery to place pins and wires into Brady’s injured leg, holding it in the proper position for healing. While these tiny devices temporarily held his leg into position, Brady never lost his sense of playfulness and perseverance. Despite his rough start, Brady went on to enjoy a full recovery and was happily adopted into a loving home. AnimalFare • Fall 2008 www.sdhumane.org 11
