president’s message
The Greatest Gift of All
Mark Goldstein, D.V.M.,
CAWA, President of
the San Diego Humane
Society and SPCA
with his dog Ren.
Many great minds, from Benjamin Franklin to Mortimer Zuckerman, have said that the true measure of
wealth is not having a lot of money but is having the time to enjoy it. I have always kept this saying in
mind here at the San Diego Humane Society. It reminds us all that the most valuable resource in
anyone’s life is time. Whether you are rich or poor, you are only given 24 hours in a day and seven days in one
week, which is why I am so grateful for the many volunteers that help us at the San Diego Humane Society.
Each year, more than 400 volunteers donate their most valuable resource with generosity and enthusiasm. As
a non-profit organization that relies on contributions from the community to operate each day, I am always aware
of our financial limits. But with the support of our volunteers, we are truly rich. Donating more than 68,000
hours of their time this past year, our volunteers contribute what would amount to more than $1.2 million worth
of labor.
Because we know that we could not achieve our mission of finding homes for animals and educating the
community on the joys of the human-animal bond without their help, every volunteer at the San Diego Humane
Society is valued and respected just as much as our paid employees. Whether they are volunteering at a special
event, helping with clerical tasks or socializing our animals, we believe in the importance of providing
comprehensive training for every volunteer. We also know that volunteering in a shelter environment can come
with certain risks, which is why we hold special training sessions for all volunteers that work directly with
our animals. In this issue, you will read about the tremendous commitment made by each of our Foster Care
Program volunteers, who make room not only in their hearts but also in their homes, providing “round-the-clock”
care for animals that could not thrive without their loving guardianship.
Our Foster Care Program volunteers can tell you that spending their free time helping the San Diego Humane
Society has benefited them just as much as it has benefited us. It inspires me to see how devoted our volunteers are
to our mission. By volunteering with us, they become ambassadors for all that we do at the San Diego Humane
Society. By sharing their volunteer stories with those in the community, our volunteers validate our work and
serve as a beacon for those who may not understand the value of what the San Diego Humane Society brings to
our community.
I hope that as you read the story of our Foster Care Program volunteers, you will feel as proud of our
volunteers as we are. If you have ever considered volunteering, I encourage you to visit our website and discover
the many ways in which you can get involved. We deeply appreciate their gift to us and the value of the time our
volunteers invest.
From the Mailbox
Dear Humane Society,
We wanted to thank you for introducing us to
our perfect companion, Reese! We had been looking
for a dog and saw Reese at a mobile adoption event
on the way to Home Depot. After gathering a
shopping cart full of hardware, we pushed it into
the corner and headed back to spend more time
with him. A week later, he was ours! My wife and I
have are incredibly happy. Moreover, so is he! Reese knows tons of tricks and is always
willing to learn. We even bought a new home so that he would have a yard to run around
in. Thank you for caring for Reese until he found his “forever home.”
Sincerely,
Laurent & Jackie (Reese’s parents)
Hi Humane Society!
We adopted Patches and Butterscotch last
December after having just lost our beloved Pooh,
who ruled our home for the past 14 years. She
made it clear she was an only child, so we honored
that. We knew, however, that one day we would
adopt an adult bonded pair. We found Patches
and Butterscotch right away. They are just incredibly special and add so much to our
lives. Not to replace Pooh, but the house is just not a home without a cat or two. They
are love-bugs and clamor for attention and playtime. They rule the roost! We feel very
lucky to have them and thank you for taking such good care of them until they could
find their forever home.
Hello Humane Society!
Back in March, I adopted the newest member of my
family, a wonderful guinea pig named Norbert (who goes
by Norbie Lou). He is a remarkable guinea pig unlike
any I’ve ever known. I believe he thinks he is a dog
because one of his favorite things to do is to run around
the house squeaking away, sprinting from room to room.
When he gets tired, he lies down on the carpet, places
his head on his claws and watches TV with me! He is a wonderful, friendly companion
who kisses everyone (including my roommate’s puppy)! His fun-filled personality brings
a smile to anyone’s face and always brightens my day.
Thank you for helping me adopt the best pet ever!
Shayla
success
Foster Care volunteer Jenny Gonzales holds
a kitten just one week old, whose eyes could
open at any moment. Though he has been
born into this world so small and helpless,
the first days of Buddha’s life have been full of love,
security and tender care.
Buddha has never gone hungry, as every two
hours he receives life-giving nutrients from the tip
of a warm bottle. He has never known vulnerability
or danger, as Buddha falls asleep each night in soft
blankets and a protective kennel. Buddha wakes to a
new day full of health and growing potential, as he
snuggles and plays with his adorable brother, Tucker.
When the time comes for Buddha to first open his
bright eyes to this big world, it will have supported
him in every minute of his life so far. Somewhere in
this kitten’s heart, Buddha will know he has been
taken care of.
cover story
The San Diego Humane Society Foster Care Program
gives pets a head start in life
Foster parents are those truly special
individuals who open their hearts and
homes to young kittens like Buddha.
Buddha is among the thousands of puppies
and kittens under the age of eight weeks
who have participated in the San Diego
Humane Society’s Foster Care Program.
The goal is to provide these animals with
the support and attention they need before
they are old enough to be adopted.
However, baby animals are not the
only ones to receive a fresh start through
this program. Animals recovering from
surgery or illness and with minor medical
needs may also be placed in foster homes.
The process is rehabilitating for them,
sometimes even life-saving. Additionally,
animals that have been in the shelter for
long periods of time or that are having
difficulty adjusting to a shelter environment
may benefit from the program.
The result of giving a little hope, care
and love is often amazing to see. Many
foster parents comment that their
experience is more rewarding than words
could ever describe.
The process to become foster parent is
simple, educational and truly unforgettable.
Animals may transition through three
different sets of homes and foster parents
during the first eight weeks of their life.
These weeks are divided into three
developmental stages: Neonate (weeks 1-2),
Transitional (weeks 3-5) and Socialization
(weeks 6-8). Foster volunteers learn about
each stage in detail through an orientation
and Foster Training Class and then may
decide which they are most interested in
and able to support.
Foster Coordinator Karen Kelley acts as
the liaison between the San Diego Humane
Society and foster parents. “It is very
fulfilling to help foster parents learn about
and experience the process first hand,”
Karen notes. “Some volunteers have actually
adopted the animals they fostered, while
others keep the memory fondly in their
hearts and are thrilled to see their animals
grow into a healthy adoptable companion.”
A baby kitten perfectly named
“Precious” was only six weeks old when
Brenda Guerrero volunteered to foster her.
Precious was rescued from an abandoned
garage full of oil and dirt. She was
dehydrated, starving and frighteningly
cold. Now safe, this helpless kitten was in
need of someone who could provide around
the clock guardianship.
When Brenda arrived at the San Diego
Humane Society to meet with veterinarian
Dr. Katie Kangas, Precious had just taken
the first bath of her life. Now with a clean
coat, Precious barely weighed what a
one-week-old kitten should weigh, and
Dr. Kangas wasn’t positive if she would
make it through the night.
While Brenda was instantly moved and
concerned for the kitten’s welfare, she knew
that as a foster parent, she was trusted
and supported by the San Diego Humane
Society. She also knew that the staff would
provide her with everything she required to
best care for this beautiful kitten, including
all the supplies and resources needed for
Precious to have a chance at full recovery.
“When I reached the house, I began
hydrating her ever so gently with water
from a syringe,” recalls Brenda, “feeding
her very small amounts every one to two
hours. I kept her on my lap and in my arms
all evening. I was so worried that she might
leave this world too soon, but every now
and then, Precious raised her head as if to
say ‘I’m still here’ and went back to sleep.”
After a long night of love and support,
Precious was still breathing at 6 a.m. Both
thankful and tired, Brenda took Precious
back to the San Diego Humane Society for
a scheduled morning check up. Dr. Kangus
enthusiastically informed Brenda that she
did a great job and Precious was going to
make it!
Nicole Campos gently bathes Betsy, a five-weekold
Domestic Shorthair kitten, as part of her
responsibilities as a foster parent.
“I felt so proud that my little bit of love
and attention could help this kitten survive
what had been such a harsh beginning,”
Brenda said.
Precious went on to fully recover and
spend an additional two weeks with
Brenda as her foster parent. Not long after,
Precious reached an adoptable age and
premium health. A family soon fell in love
with her on the adoption floor and brought
home a healthy and affectionate kitten to
call their own.
Brenda is one of the many volunteers who
contribute nearly 7,000 hours of their time
per month. The San Diego Humane Society
is thankful to all those who have participated
in the program thus far and is excited about
its continual growth and success. While the
program has yielded amazing results, there
is always more that can be done. If you are
Every Step Counts at the Walk for Animals
– by Shannon Gusy, 2008 Walker
The 14 th Annual Walk for Animals was coincidentally on my birthday,
May 3, 2008, and a day after my beloved companion passed away.
I arrived promptly at 7:30 in the morning with one water bottle in
hand, two unnecessary granola bars and a dozen pictures of my
dog, Sugar.
After 15 years of unconditional love and playful humor, Sugar, a Bichon
Frise, passed away peacefully. The greatest gift I could receive on my
birthday would be to walk in her memory, surrounded by countless other
animals that have fulfilled and enhanced human lives the way she did.
The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA knows no limits when it
comes to valuing the significance of the human-animal bond. As I filled out
my registration card for the event, I could already feel the positive energy
and celebratory spirit that had consumed Crown Point Shores, Mission Bay.
Before the starting line, there were about 50 entertaining, informative
and tasty stops to make – for both human and animal participants! As
animals tasted bones and hot dogs, I saved my granola bars for another
occasion. Unlike the Poodle chewing one of the many treats donated by
PETCO, I enjoyed a delicious pile of pancakes served by the 30 volunteers
who gathered to provide walkers with an energizing breakfast.
Dave Mason of 105.7 FM “The Walrus” and Clear Channel’s Pamela
Howe emceed the event, as radio station Star 94.1 FM accompanied the
many sponsors who made it such a success! Raffle contests with prizes
ranging from Disneyland tickets to professional dance classes were awarded
to 20 lucky winners. A diverse Vendor Village spread across the park,
offering everything from pet supplies to live training consultations to mobile
adoptions and further information about the San Diego Humane Society.
Humane Society President Dr. Mark Goldstein shared the stage
with Mayor Jerry Sanders as both commented and thanked attendees
for making San Diego the most pet-friendly city in the United States.
The smiles on their faces seemed larger than the distance we would
walk from start to finish.
Shortly thereafter, Reverend Canon Lee Teed of Saint Paul’s Episcopal
Cathedral led us in a blessing of the animals. As we began the course,
a friend of mine let me walk her dog who seemed almost identical to
Sugar, from the way her legs pranced to her stubborn sense of direction
to the lively jingle of her collar.
While we did stop for a few water breaks, it wasn’t long before we
crossed the finish line. Dr. Goldstein and volunteers were there to capture
the moment on film and cheerfully hand out water. Though I didn’t win
any of the raffles I entered, I couldn’t help but feel tremendously successful
by participating in such a fulfilling cause. In a few miles and this one
morning alone, more than $365,000 was raised to assist pets in need,
thanks to the generosity of sponsors and walkers.
As the Humane Society inspirationally walks on with their mission,
every step of the way is a path to enrichment, made possible by you, for
both humans and animals alike.
Donors Support Mobile Adoptions Program
Thanks to the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation and Pilar and Chuck Bahde
More than 10 times each month, our Mobile Adoptions staff and
volunteers load up adoptable pets and supplies into a recreational
vehicle specially equipped to safely transport animals. The program
goes to shopping malls, community fairs, and other locations to promote the
San Diego Humane Society’s programs and services. At these events, the
San Diego Humane Society also brings a variety of animals out of the shelter
and into the neighborhoods for on-site adoptions, and nearly 15 percent of
San Diego Humane Society adoptions each year come from Mobile events!
Through the wonderful support of some very kind-hearted donors, the
program recently received a big boost in funding. The San Diego Humane
Society would like to offer heartfelt thanks to the Ellen Browning Scripps
Foundation for its generous grant of $25,000, as well as a contribution of
stock valued at just over $29,000 given by longtime supporters Pilar and
Chuck Bahde.
These special gifts go a long way in ensuring the program’s continued
service of bringing adoptable pets to the community, but your donation towards
the remaining $20,000 required to fully fund this program throughout the year
is still needed. To sponsor the Mobile Adoptions program, please contact Shelly
Stuart, Vice President of Development and Education, at (619) 243-3410 or
Meow Madness: A Cat-tastic Event!
Cat lovers from around the county turned out for the San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s annual feline focused
adoptathon. Held on Saturday, June 7 from 9:30 a.m. to
7 p.m., Meow Madness transformed our campus into cat central.
As part of the festivities, our Feline Fun Fair featured booths
with helpful information from the Feral Cat Coalition and the
San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s Animal Rescue Reserve,
and Outback Barney showcased his magnificent cat hotels. The
celebration was topped off with ice cream courtesy of Ben and
Jerry’s Horton Plaza location, and the Petco Foundation
generously provided fabulous prizes for attendees.
Meow Madness resulted in a total of 35 adoptions
for the weekend and another 89 adoptions during
the rest of the month for a total of 124 felines finding
new homes in June! We extend a very warm thank
you to all the attendees, volunteers and sponsors that
made Meow Madness possible. Be sure to mark your
calendars for our next adoption event, Barktoberfest, on
October 11, where our lovable pups will get their turn in
the spotlight!
s A “Crash” Course at Camp
Crash, a two-year-old Labrador Retriever, takes
direction from Humane Society camper Leia Mayberry,
age 11. Campers interacted with a variety of animals
during six week-long camp sessions in July and August
designed to educate children on the proper care of
companion animals and to foster compassion for all
living things.
s 101 Dog Lovers
This May, the J*Company Youth Theatre, a program of the San
Diego Center for Jewish Culture at the Lawrence Family Jewish
Community Center, JACOBS FAMILY CAMPUS, ran its production
of DISNEY’S 101 DALMATIANS Kids. In a partnership with the
San Diego Humane Society, a public service slideshow was run prior
to each performance, and mobile adoptions were held on-site for two
performances. Prior to the production, the 101-member cast toured
the Humane Society facility and received information about pet care,
adoption, and the prevention of animal cruelty and neglect.
Healthy, Happy, and Homeward Bound
Brady came to the Humane Society as a puppy with a serious fracture
of his left hind leg. Veterinary staff performed specialized surgery to place
pins and wires into Brady’s injured leg, holding it in the proper position for
healing. While these tiny devices temporarily held his leg into position,
Brady never lost his sense of playfulness and perseverance. Despite his
rough start, Brady went on to enjoy a full recovery and was happily adopted
into a loving home.
Ask Dr. B
The Value of Vaccines: Protecting Your New Kitten
Q: I just adopted a new kitten, and I
want to make sure she starts off life on
the right paw – what vaccines does she
need to stay happy and healthy?
– Kitten Lover in Kensington
A: Up until about 15 years ago, the
answer to this question was a fairly standard
one: your kitten should receive every
vaccine that is available for cats. Later, as
an adult, it should receive every vaccine
available every year for its entire life.
However, in the early 1990s, it was
recognized that some cats can develop very
serious reactions to some vaccines, including
the development of a life-threatening cancer
at the vaccination site. As veterinarians
began to study this phenomenon, it became
apparent that we were over-vaccinating
some cats. They were receiving vaccines that
they really did not need. As a consequence,
today, opinions vary somewhat as to which
vaccines are recommended. Opinions also
vary as to how often these vaccines should
be given.
To try to put some scientific basis behind
the recommendations that veterinarians
were making, the American Association
of Feline Practitioners put out a set of
recommendations that was based on
the best possible scientific information
available. This group tried to weigh the
benefits gained by vaccine administration
versus the risk of side effects that all
vaccines have.
To determine which vaccines an
individual cat needs, it is important to
make an honest appraisal of that cat’s
lifestyle and environment. A cat living
on the 8 th floor of a high rise apartment
that never goes out of the apartment has a
completely different risk of exposure to
serious contagious diseases than does a
cat that lives outdoors and comes into
contact with many other neighborhood cats.
Because of this difference in exposure risks,
the apartment cat should receive different
vaccine recommendations than the outdoor
cat.*
We now divide vaccines up into “core”
and “non-core” groups. The “core” vaccines
are recommended for all cats, be they indoor
or outdoor, while the “non-core” vaccines
are recommended only for those cats that
have significant risk of exposure to the
diseases these vaccines are designed to
protect against.
The core vaccines that are recommended
for all kittens are:
1. FVRCP, or a vaccine against Feline
Viral Rhinotracheitis, a respiratory
infection
2. Feline Calicivirus, which also
protects against respiratory infection
3. Feline Panleucopenia, often called
Feline Distemper
All kittens will need a series of at least
two of the above vaccines given two to four
weeks apart. The exact number of vaccines
each kitten receives will depend on the
age of the kitten at the time they start this
series of vaccines. As a general rule, the
earlier they start (as early as five weeks of
age), the better protection they receive, but
the greater the number of vaccinations they
will require.
Finally, your kitten should receive a
single rabies vaccine after they are four
months of age. As an adult, the FVRCP
needs to be repeated every three years for
most cats throughout their entire lives.
Rabies vaccination is repeated at one year
after the first vaccine was administered,
and then it is repeated every three years
thereafter.
Your regular veterinarian recommends
the non-core vaccines only if it is felt
that your cat has a significant risk of
being exposed to certain diseases. The
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline
Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) vaccines
are the two most commonly recommended
Photo: Jen Petit
non-core vaccines available. These two
diseases are only spread by direct contact
of cats, so if your cat is indoors and has
minimal to no direct contact with other
cats, these vaccines are typically not
recommended.
When making a decision about which
vaccines to have administered to your cat,
it is important to sincerely evaluate your
cat’s environment. While not all cats need
every vaccine available, it is also important
to recognize that administration of the
proper vaccines for your cat is one of the
most important health decisions you will
be making. Modern vaccines have saved
literally millions of cats’ lives by preventing
life-threatening contagious diseases.
Eyes of San Diego reflects a goal shared by the San Diego Humane
Society and Beth Mallon: highlighting the joys of pet adoption and
ownership. “This is a testimony to the success of second chances,”
writes Mallon in the book’s forward. “And in this celebration, it is
our hope that you are also reminded of the thousands of companion
animals that are still waiting for homes each day and that rely on the
generosity and support of the San Diego community.”
