<strong>The</strong> <strong>Geomorphology</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Sediments</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cockburn</strong> <strong>Sound</strong><br />

deposits. Video transects <strong>of</strong> the floor <strong>of</strong> the central basin show a relatively flat, bioturbated seabed<br />

with patches <strong>of</strong> unidentified vegetation (e.g. macroalgae). Scattered large shells <strong>and</strong> carbonate<br />

encrustations are also evident.<br />

Sediment Facies<br />

Four distinct sediment types were identified based upon the sedimentological analyses <strong>of</strong> the<br />

samples <strong>of</strong> surface sediment (Fig. 10).<br />

Nearshore Quartz S<strong>and</strong> (Gravelly shelly mixed carbonate/quartz s<strong>and</strong>): This unit comprises light<br />

greyish brown, fine to coarse grained (mean: 0.43 mm; st<strong>and</strong>ard deviation: 0.36 mm), poorly sorted,<br />

gravelly s<strong>and</strong> with a low fine material (
