College of Technology will be presenting the facts and myths concerning the process of <br />

thermoforming and will at the end of the day allow you to decide whether <strong>Thermoforming</strong> is, in <br />

fact, a science or still a Black Art. <br />

Program: <br />

What are the factors (Mythcrushers) that have enabled thermoforming to be accepted as a science and why <br />

is it that many companies still struggle with the technology and are unable to master the science? The <br />

presentation will discuss the factors that need to be mastered as well as the new developments that the <br />

machine and resin vendors have developed in support of this science. <br />

8 a.m.: Introductions to speakers and the day’s program <br />

8:15 a.m.-­‐9:15 a.m.: Ian <strong>Strachan</strong> – Why Has <strong>Thermoforming</strong> for So Long Been <br />

Considered the Black Sheep of the Plastics Conversion Processes <br />

The presentation will take a brief look at the various technologies that <br />

compete with thermoforming and will discuss the advantages and <br />

disadvantages of thermoforming. It will then look at the factors that led to <br />

thermoforming being considered the black sheep of the plastics conversion <br />

processes (Black Art). <br />

<strong>Thermoforming</strong> components (Mold Cavities, Inserts, <br />

Plug assists, knives and part stacking) <br />
