The Global Mining Summit <strong>2010</strong><br />
organized concurrently with the 10th<br />
International Mining and Machinery<br />
Exhibition, Asia’s largest mining exhibition,<br />
was inaugurated in Kolkata on 10 November.<br />
Covering the entire gamut of the mining,<br />
minerals and processing industry, it was<br />
held in partnership with the Government<br />
of West Bengal and the Ministry of Mines<br />
and Coal.<br />
The inaugural session was attended by a<br />
galaxy of eminent dignitaries from overseas<br />
and India including Mr Wahidullah Shahrani,<br />
Minister of Mines, Islamic<br />
Republic of Afghanistan;<br />

Parliamentary Secretary<br />
for Trade, Australia; Mr<br />

sector, covering<br />
the entire gamut<br />
of the mining,<br />
minerals and<br />

industry<br />
The Exhibition<br />
Spread over an area of 55,000 sqm of indoor and outdoor<br />
exhibition space with an International Conference and<br />
Buyer Seller Meet, the 10th IMME <strong>2010</strong> a new record<br />
participation of 450 participants from 24 countries<br />
including Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark,<br />
Ireland, Italy, Korea, South Africa, UK, USA, etc. Australia<br />
was the partner country and Germany was the focus<br />
country of the four day exhibition.<br />
The exhibition was attended by over 12,500 business<br />
visitors and 1,546 overseas visitors with an aggregate of<br />
more than 17,300 visitors. Over 18,000 business enquiries<br />
were made over the four-day event, and a number of<br />
instant orders took place.<br />

In his special address, Mr Wahidullah<br />
Shahrani elaborated on the current scenario<br />
of the mining industry in Afghanistan. Worth<br />
an estimated $ 3 trillion and rich in minerals<br />
like iron ore, copper, graphite, lithium, cobalt,<br />
gold, oil and gas and many more, it has huge<br />
potential for further exploration. He informed<br />
that by January next year, a major gas<br />
pipeline project from Afghanistan to India via<br />
Pakistan worth $ 8 – 8.5<br />
billion will commence.<br />
Ms Justine Elliot stated that<br />
India plays an important<br />
role in Australia’s mining<br />
trade and cited energy<br />
security partnership as<br />
one significant area of<br />
challenge.<br />
