WiILLYS OUT-NUMBER ALL OTHER MARQUES AT
JIMBO’s WEST COAST SOUP KITCHEN
For the fist time in WA rodding history, Willys
out-numbered all other Pre-48 vehicles at a rodders
function. The duo of Tony Mattioli and Eric Warren created
this near miracle situation and WA
rodding history by attending
Ebony & Ivory! Editor’s 39er above
Jimbo’s Saturday morning greasy
cook-up in their Willys coupes.
Mel Broun’s 39 Chev was only
partnered by Brian French’s post
48 Chevy PU to match the Willys
quantity. Even then they still outnumbered
the ford grand total of
ZERO! Either the ford owners are
watching their grease intake
or they all slept in.
(or they didn’t make it)
AIR COND UNDIES
for rodders with stinking hot cabs in summer..

. Hi All,
This edition is limited by printing costs and creativity time only. There is
no shortage of events to report on at this time of year. In the last 6 weeks
we have had three of four the biggest annual events on the WA rodding
calendar to enjoy, so sit back and enjoy the show.
To date I don’t have a report from the Nostalgia drags and I’m not
holding my breath for anyone to email me one, so I have got a club busy
bee report article in its place, which occurred on the same day and
involved many more members.
This month I need to thank Vince Berriman and Keith Wilson for
their photos from Big Al’s Poker Run. Somehow, my own camera had
flat batteries and the spares were no better, which meant I took no photos
at the run. These guys came to my rescue. Jeff Pringle also offered me his
camera. Thanks. Normally either Allan
Rossi or I have one working camera
between us, but he wasn’t there.
Every now and then while
driving about in the coupe I spot another
rod. It makes a great difference to my trip,
be it on the weekend or going to or from
work. It only happens about once a
month. Often they are in the distance or
going in another direction. This month, one morning on the way to the salt
mine, I actually got through traffic on Reid highway to cruise for a
kilometre or so with this neat A roadster pick up. I have seeen it once
before and at the ROTY rod run. I don’t know the owners name, but we
gave an onya-mate wave as we eventually headed off in different
directions. What a great start to the day.
The brains trust at the club have put together three dates for Gettin-
2–know-ya BBQs. We have a lot of relatively new members and being
fairly shy types it is generally up to these bods to make themselves
known somehow. Because they are normally shy too, to negate the

necessity of engaging in
some way out fruit cake
Continued..... ritual just to be
remembered, these BBQ evenings are organised for all members to
attend and the focus will be on getting to know the new guys and their
partners in a normal manner. See the dates inside the back cover and be
sure to attend as many of them as possible. There will be name tags and
stuff, I’m sure, to make it easy.
What are people going to complain about next, now that AB has
removed his dormant ’35 tourer from the club workshop after it’s 7? year
hibernation. The rental payment of one carton of beer was duly noted
and appreciated by the only EMU Draught drinker in the club (me) but
left others guessing when the next
installment was coming. Rental
was $2 a week pre-1983 in the old
Maylands shed.
This edition I have squeezed
in Noelene Hughes “HUG” mouse
racing advert again on the inside
back cover. If you haven’t been
mouse racing before , it is worth
supporting just to check it out.
Very funny. Get a group along for
a laugh while supporting a good
cause at the same time.
At this stage I warn readers
that some people and rods seem to
appear repeatedly throughout this
edition. Right place, right timing I
guess.
There is simply too much
other good content in this edition
to keep you from, by babbling on
and on, so get on with it and I’ll
write too you again next month.
Cheers,
Extreme E.
Above: Getting to know fellow members...
Who in hell would own this
Flathead trike??? Guess! Below:
Busy bees are great events for getting
to know new members.. Turn up
for a good laugh, no matter what the
punishment is. Read on.

Big AL’S Poker Run. 14/2/09
(Photos: Keith Wilson & Vince Berriman)
Once again, Big Al’s Poker Run, fell on St Valentines Day, so
what better way to celebrate than to take one’s partner down for a stroll
around a park while zig zagging through 700 vehicles, several times, a
leisurely drive across town to indulge in a losing game of Poker and a
take-away meal on a footy oval, listening to a good rockabilly & rock n roll
band. Surely “I must be in heaven” most females must be thinking! And
they were! It was after all the annual Big Al’s Poker Run number 29!
This year, the weather on the day of the run
looked dubious. It was heavily overcast with
blacker clouds passing overhead in upper wind
currents It was a
classical a storm
brewing
appearance. A
call to Big Al
Above: Alan
Barker’s Model A Tub;
a V6 powered A40 PU
and a new Model T
based C- cab painted
Kermit Frog green.
confirmed that
the coupe still
had a Poker Run
to attend, that
day. It was the
last run the
coupe went on in
1996 (to Perth
Oval) before its
last triple carb
flame up. It
occurred on the
way home the
following day in
105F degree
heat. This year
Above: Why would you
build a Chevy or ford when
mid 50’s Buicks are available.
Especially the convertibles.

it was cooler, in fact
perfect cruising
weather, even
with about 6
bursts of 10 drops of rain during the run. It
remained dry for the remainder of the evening.
We arrived at Burswood in the Willys at about 2:30, paid our bucks and
became officially entrant #647 of a total of 688. I estimate that there were
about 50 - 70 rods on the
run.
At about 4:00pm the run
began. I waited until about
500 cars had left before
joining a string of 5 rods
and headed for the way out
to get our route
Noddy’s Smart Car! instructions. I don’t know
Big Als Poker Run 2009
where the other rods went, but I was on a
route by myself. In fact, I was the only rod
everywhere I went excepting at the common
check points that served all four different
routes.. Although the route was well thought
out, considering that I use my hot rod daily,
this wasn’t generating much of a buzz for
me. It was just like another day stuck in
normal traffic. I have since suggested to
Big Al that maybe all hot rods be given the
same route to cruise. Possibly likewise for
other marques as well. I am sure this
would make it more enjoyable for the
rodders
who are
hugely out
numbered
by the post
1948
vehicles.

Half the time, you can’t
tell if the shiny clean
cars you see en route
are in the Poker Run or
not. Basically, in rodders’ terms, many of them are
simply street hacks (or “shit” as a conservative member of the rodding
community cared to call them). Hopefully the run committee may take up
on the idea.
Our cruise took us on the Polly Farmer Freeway, to the city and past
Northbridge to the first check point
that was manned by Crankystar
members who all were done up in
was fun to see. From
here my cruise
“partners” were a 57
Chevy convertible loaded with
chicks, who soon left us for a short
cut to the Kwinana Freeway and also
an AB style Anglia tourer that also
left us as they took the wrong turn
into the bus depot. From here we
headed over the Narrows and then
onto Canning Highway heading for
Freo. Now we were amongst some
XU1 and SLR Toranas and Monaros.
I think they were on the run!. After
another check point, we eventually
got to Fremantle and used a wrong
turn to find a parking spot to buy
some dinner at Subway and have a
pee stop and whistle wetting beer at

Big Als Poker Run 2009
a pub. We regathered the
route and were on our way
to the final destination at
East Fremantle Oval.
Here we came across the
Anglia again outside the
oval on the side of the
road. I pulled up to see that they were OK. The driver theatrically mimed
his reply by holding the gear lever up in his hand above the windscreen…
Pommy rubbish I thought……. and drove away being unable to assist.
something different. This year it was a
“project” to get some wow factor approval
happening, for the product of someone’s idle
time and spare parts. To each there own!
We entered the oval and received our final
Poker card. It was as
bad as if I was playing
for shekels. We took
up a parking spot on
the manicured oval and set
up for the evening’s event.
After eating our
apparently weight
reducing Subway “Sub”,
we grabbed a drink from
the bar and once again
did the Valentines Day
stroll amongst the
hundreds of vehicles
parked on the grass.
Big Al had the band
“Twist and Shout” up on
the stage and the rockers
were rocking up some
steam on the huge
assembled dance floor.
Later, came the monster
raffle and top poker hand
announcements, then
followed by the drive-by
trophy presentation for
the best cars in each
class, picked by random
judges with random
ooowahh tastes. Each
car drove past the stage
in front of the gathered
masses and received
the royal handshake
and trophy from Big
Al. himself. Finally... The
moment everyone waits for
arrived ... The icing on the
cake... Big Al’s monster
speech. This year all were in
silence hanging on the edge
of their seats.........for
exacly 17.5 seconds... And
it was all over again for another year.
WOW.
Congratulations to Big Al and his team
for another great event this year. EW.

The
Busselton Drive-In Rod Run
The Radiators Hot Rod Club held the 12th Busselton Drive-in
Run on the March long weekend. They are to be congratulated on designing,
preparing and running a first class event, that in my experience is the closest
thing in WA to the Valla Park run in NSW, which is one of Australia’s
premiere hot rodding events. Simply fantastic.
This year the centre of the run was
again the Peppermint Park holiday village,
with most entrants opting to make it their
base for the weekend. This year some rodders
opted to try other venues in the name of
research, looking for possible alternatives
for the 2010 Mini Nats that will also be
based in Busselton.
The format of the event starts with a
pizza pig-out on the Friday night for those
who get there early. Lots got there early and
there was a mountain of pizzas to hoe
through and no one made it to the bottom of
the pile. This is a great night to settled down
with rodding buddies for a yarn and a few
beverages.
Saturday morning was the the Show n
Shine in a park near the city centre, between
10.00am and 1.00pm. This was used as a
fundraiser for charity. We left Peppermint
Park en masse with the local constabulary
Above: Bob has put wires and
a new new gearbox in Steve
Hicklings old 35 Chev. Below:
Barry Batten’s pickup
blocking the traffic to allow us all to drive out onto the main drag as a single
group. That was pretty neat.
During the show n shine, entrants were left to their imagination, so
most dumped their rods and walked to the local sites or shops. Important
activities included morning tea and eventually lunch. Denise and I managed
to walk to the end of the famous Busselton Jetty that is 1.7 Kms long... And

The
Busselton
Drive-In Rod
Run
then back again, only driven by
the thought of a Simmo’s ice
cream once back on shore.
After a walking tour of the
shops and being dragged screaming through about 27 ladies shoe shops,
by Denise, did I finally manage to have an ale and roast meal for lunch at
the The Esplanade Hotel... along with the Frenchs and Curnows whom
had arrived earlier without suffering a similar traumatic ordeal. Anyway,
the meal and beer were fantastic and I managed to recover from the earlier
ordeal. By now, it was just after 1.00pm so we headed back to the
rods and then back to base.
One of the pleasant things
about the rod run format is the just
right amount of spare time available.
Saturday after-noon was like
that with a few spare hours to kill
before engaging the stomach again
and heading for the drive-in. There
was even time to have a beer or two
and pump a few keystrokes on the
After food, we assembled
at one of the only
drive-ins left in captivity.
With daylight saving
still with us, we had an
hour or so to kill with socializing
and telling lies
before it was dark enough
for the show to begin. As usual, the kids show was better than
the main film. At least the main film was good enough to keep
most rodders there until the end. On other nights, only about 10
rods make it to the end. In the absence of the Big Al and Dave Doggett’s
chop charcoaling event after the film, the day was over..
Sunday morning and all was still OK weather-wise, despite the
threats of naughty big black rain
clouds.
It was time to shake a tail feather. No
time to sleep in. Nu Breed Street Rod
Club members were cooking breakfast
for everyone. Coffee, tea, juice, eggs,
bacon, toast and pancakes. The well
Later that afternoon you
could attend rocker cover and
hot wheel races, have face painting,
attend a local ASRF DC meeting or
just socialize. This year, entrants in
the rocker cover and Hot Wheels
gravity races were a bit thin. AB
managed to fine tune his rocker cover
from last year and with Spider Man at
the helm managed to win that event.
Hot Wheels was dominated by tomorrows
rodders. Next was an
Jim Longman’s Mercury
excellent spit roast meal supplied by
the rod run organisers. No one went hungry here. The meal was followed
by the annual funny auction that raises funds for charity. Barry Batten was
again the electric auctioneer. Aided by his side kicks Mick Allender and
Alan Barker, they raised $2400 (I think). Thanks to bidders and the suppliers
for making that possible. I swear I
saw at least three different Archie Fullertons
bidding at times.
The full potential of the auction that
night remains unknown as we had to
pack it up in fairness to other patrons of
Busy Bee.
I love busy bees. These days, they are pretty
simple events. No more steel structures to cut,
weld, transport and erect, no more digging or
pouring footings before going to work on a
weekday , no more roofing or laying thousands of bricks. no more
sewers pipes to lay and connect. It is all pretty easy. Even back then,
the work was harder and at times more dangerous, but the
camaraderie of the members working together made it great fun and
a good day out.
My girls still have
nightmares of the old drop
hole dunny! In fact, Besides
MS losing a thong in a
puddle of tar, it’s all they
remember about the
clubrooms being built. It is
probably the same for Rob
Soia’s and the Curnows’
children too.
Now that the clubrooms
have been completed for a
while, it is now time to start
the maintenance. This busy
painted, and Frenchie touched
most of it to make sure. The

carpark also got its parking bays repinstriped.
The start time was about 7.00am. I can’t vouch for that
happening due to previous party committments the evening
before and getting there a bit later.. It all finish at around lunch time.
brighten up his contribution to this Klaxon
A burglar breaks into a rodder's garage to pinch some valuable Chevy parts. As he quietly
searches in the dark, a voice comes from behind him-
'Jesus is watching you!"
The burglar freezes in fear then waits to see what happens next. Nothing but silence.
He continues to quietly place the valuables in his bag. Then, from behind him comes the same
voice-
"Jesus is watching you!"
the burglar turns an switches on his flashlight
There, across the garage is a large parrot sitting in a cage.
"D D D Did you say something?" the burglar whispered.
"I sure did,' replied the parrot
"Well you must be a very clever parrot. What's your name?'
"Moses." squawked the bird.
"Moses!!. What kind of people call their parrot Moses?" mumbles the burglar.
"The same kind of people who call their rottweiler Jesus." replies the parrot

SummerSun
Mid-week Cuise to
Rockingham.
On a fantastic evening blessed with
perfect weather, Big Al held his SummerSun Festival mid week cruise from
Joondalup to Rockingham. Estimates of participant numbers range from
220 to over 400. It was hard to tell, as the format of joining the run along the
way and the final parking arrangements never
had all of the vehicles together at any one
time.
Some start at the beginning but most add to
the run by queuing along the freeway onramps
along the way and joining onto the tail
as it passes by.
The run started at Joondalup at 6:00pm
on Wednesday night (18/2). It cruises nearly the full length of the Mitchell
and Kwinana Freeways, exits at Thomas Street off ramp and heads towards
Rockingham. The entourage splits from the main drag at Kwinana Beach
and cruises along the beach front until it reaches the Rockingham Beach
front. I opted to join the run at the Roe Highway on ramp, at the
website listed time of 6:31pm, but on approach there were about fifteen
vehicles already there. The sight of so many cars head to tail on the side lane,
with many of the occupants mingling around, had the passing freeway
traffic down to a snails pace as the dickheads of the
driving public
slowed down to
have a look at
the anticipated
prang. Seeing
all this, I shot

y and pulled up a kilometre down the road
under an overpass. Here I managed to park
and not slow down the traffic at all. Don’t
they know a Willys coupe when they see
one?…Southern suburb drivers with no
taste…
The SummerSun website posts anticipated
times for the run to pass each on ramp.
Considering that the run passed through
Perth, it was very accurate and passed us at
about 6:34pm with Big Al giving a blast
from the A model’s Klaxon as he shot by.
From there on, the cruise ran very
smoothly with hundreds of rods, classics and
muscle cars mingling amongst the long string
of after work, going home traffic. It was an
eyeball smorgasbord for those that like our
choice of transportation.
This year traffic police manned the
Kwinana Beach turn off intersection and gave
the participating string of cars an almost
unbroken run through the traffic lights. We
stopped near Kwinana Beach to allow the
entourage to bunch up and then we had a
police escort into Rockingham. It worked
very well.
In Rockingham we were led to
the hotel’s rear car park, which
filled quickly with about 160 -200
vehicles. The balance of vehicles
were then scattered throughout the
vicinity.
Despite several closed food and
dining outlets, there seemed to be a
reasonable choice of yum yum
outlets and the queues weren’t too
bad. It was an incoming $$$
opportunity that business operators
don’t normally get mid week. Good
for those who took the opportunity
given to them by Big Al’s event.
I snatched a park behind the
pub just as things were getting
tight. From here on, it was a matter
of mingling, photo taking, yapping
and finding some food. Once again
the quickest meal was going to be a
Subway “sub”. We grabbed this
and enjoyed our meal on a park
bench overlooking the ocean..
After another walk around, it
was coffee at a cafe and then the
easy cruise up the freeway
homeward, with the expectation
of a less enjoyable morning back
at the salt mine. In all, another
great event and rodding
promotion. Thanks to Big Al.

It’s an Edsel !

Cranksters 5th Annual
Pipe Line Cruise
The Cranksters Hot Rod & Kustom Club held their 5th Pipeline
Cruise in perfect Autumn weather. The format was sinple. Gather at City
Beach, pay the $10 entry fee to get instructions and an entrant number for
the monster raffle after lunch. Then take off. This year the organisers were
possibly overwhelmed by the 190 odd
entrants, but handled it very well.
The course was simple Simon but
still too compex for
some who opted to
stay off the beach front
for a couple of
kilometres and take a
shortcut directly to
Karrinyup Road. After
that, shortcuts were
pretty rare to find.
The course was
very direct with a
minmum of traffic
lights. It took entrants
straight up Great
Eastern Highway to
the vacant block
behind the Mundaring
Hotel, which filled

eyond capacity, before
later arrivals had to park
in nearby opportunities.
The adjacent street
was closed and filled
with street stalls that
displayed the normal
well crafted and clever
fluff and crystal stall
stuff.. Alas my wallet
stayed in tact until
purchasing a meal from
the pub for lunch.
After luch the
monster raffle was held,
after which people made
their own ways back
down the hill except for
Jailbar Joe who headed
towards the next sunrise.
In all agreat day that was
very well supported.
Thanks Cranksters.
Auto One Ellenbrook .
The crew at will look after you. Lars, Aaron and Glen can also offer great
advice, gathered with years of experience.
The problem with a lot of Auto stores is they are full of fluff and crystals
and often don’t stock hard
core rodder requirements.
Ellenbrook Auto One will
order almost anything you
could need for your rod.
And still give you some
discount, if they can get
