SENIOR AWARDS ASSEMBLY <br />

APRIL 26, 2013 <br />

Brock Kesterson: GOOD MORNING, and welcome to the 2013 <br />

<strong>Senior</strong> <strong>Awards</strong> Assembly. We will begin as we do <strong>with</strong> all things <br />

here at SLUH, and so I ask Mr. Laughlin to lead us in our opening <br />

Prayer. <br />

David Laughlin: Opening Prayer <br />

Brock Kesterson: As you know, on Wednesday and Thursday of <br />

this week freshmen, sophomores and juniors were recognized at <br />

their own <strong>Awards</strong> Ceremonies. <strong>All</strong> of today’s awards – <strong>with</strong> the <br />

exception of the Faculty Appreciation Award – are for seniors. As <br />

we have done at our awards ceremonies throughout the week, <br />

today’s ceremony will recognize students for both their <br />

participation and their leadership. <br />

Our first students to be recognized today have been named by their <br />

club moderators for their diligent participation in clubs and <br />

organizations. These students will be asked to stand and receive <br />

our applause. I will read the names of students being recognized for <br />

their participation in Cocurriculars, and then Mr. Becvar will read <br />

the names of students being recognized for their achievements in <br />

Academic clubs and contests. <br />

Following this first part of our ceremony we will present medals for <br />

leadership in Cocurriculars and Academics, and we will conclude <br />

<strong>with</strong> our major awards winners in the senior class. <br />

The final part of our program focuses on special awards presented to <br />

individuals. <br />

FACULTY APPRECIATION AWARD: This award is voted on by <br />

the senior class. “In gratitude to the teachers at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> U. High <br />

for all of their efforts toward the growth of their students, we, <br />

the graduating senior class, cite the following teacher for <br />

excellence in the classroom as well as contributions outside the <br />

classroom.” This year’s award is given to: <br />

NATIONAL MERIT COMMENDED STUDENTS: Of the 1.5 million <br />

entrants, some 50,000 <strong>with</strong> the highest PSAT qualify for recognition <br />

in the National Merit Scholarship Program. In September, these high <br />

scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as <br />

either a Commended <strong>St</strong>udent or Semifinalist. <br />

MCCONAGHY AWARD: Mary Lee McConaghy has taught Latin and <br />

Greek at SLUH since 1979. Everyday in her time here, she has <br />

displayed the invaluable qualities of integrity, dedication, and <br />

JACK KRINGS AWARD: the Jack Krings Award for Outstanding <br />

Service to Others recognizes a senior who has distinguished himself <br />

in ministry to the poor and underprivileged in the spirit of justice <br />

and faith through his activities in <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> University High School’s <br />

community service program. The 2013 Jack Krings <strong>Awards</strong> winner <br />

MATTHEW RAEBER <br />

DUNN – MARTEL AWARD: The Dunn-­‐Martel Award was <br />

established twenty years ago to honor Coaches Ebbie Dunn and <br />

Paul Martel’s long and successful tenure as soccer and football <br />

coaches at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> University High School. “The school will <br />

present this award annually to the senior who maintains the <br />

high level of scholarship as well as the discipline and <br />

commitment of athletic participation that earn for him <br />

selection as “Scholar-­‐Athlete of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> University High <br />

ALEX GROESCH <br />

HINCK-­‐HEREFORD AWARD: The Hinck-­‐Hereford Award is named <br />

for the two alumni who gave their lives in the service of their <br />

country during World War II. Hinck-­‐Hereford Award is conferred <br />

on the senior who has excelled in leadership, scholarship and <br />

athletics and who, in the opinion of the senior class is judged most <br />

deserving of this award. Selected by his classmates as the recipient <br />

JSEA AWARD: The Jesuit Secondary Education Association <br />

Award is given for the twenty-­‐fifth year to a student in each of <br />

the fifty-­‐nine Jesuit High Schools in the United <strong>St</strong>ates. The JSEA <br />

is presented to the member/or members of the graduating <br />

class who best resembles this ideal: “A well-­‐rounded person <br />

who is intellectually competent, open to growth, religious, <br />

loving and committed to doing justice in generous service to <br />

the people of God.” This year’s winner is presented by Fr. Carl <br />

Heumann, S.J., Superior of the Jesuit Community: (framed cert) <br />

JOE KREIENKAMP <br />

Joe will be representing the class of 2013 as student speaker at <br />

the Graduation Dinner. <br />

MAC BOLAND AWARD: The Mac Boland Award was established by <br />

members of the class of 1958 to honor and celebrate the life of their <br />

outstanding classmate, William McCreary Boland. The recipient of <br />

this annual award, chosen by the faculty, is to be the senior who best <br />

reflects Mac Boland’s personal qualities which his classmates <br />

summarized as follows: “The otherwise unheralded senior, who thru <br />

his dedication and determination has most influenced his fellow <br />

students toward more united participation in the spirit which IS <strong>St</strong>. <br />

<strong>Louis</strong> University High School.” Each year the winner’s name is <br />

added to the plaque which hangs in the center corridor of the school. <br />

SAM WILHELM <br />

Sam will be one of the two student speakers at the Graduation <br />

<strong>Ceremony</strong>. <br />

ED HAWK MEMORIAL AWARD: The Ed Hawk award was <br />

established by members of the class of 1971 in memory of their <br />

classmate, whose life was taken after his junior year at SLUH. <br />

The fact that he was elected as an officer of the student council <br />

for his senior year is an indication of his standing among his <br />

classmates. Through their efforts, an annual award was <br />

established to recognize the senior who: “through his love and <br />

dedication to <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> University High School, and through his <br />

example of working and giving, was most able to influence his <br />

class toward success by cooperation and unity.” The winner of <br />

the 2013 Ed Hawk Award chosen by members of the <strong>Senior</strong> <br />
