an important role in the overall mission of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by contributing
to the daily security requirements at Austin Bergstrom International Airport.
Given the nature of our mission at TSA, there are some unique expectations of the position for which
required to perform various tasks such as: hand-wanding passengers, pat down searches, lifting of
baggage (weighing up to 70 pounds) and performing screening duties using various electronic
equipment. The TSO job is stressful at times and physically demanding. You will need to stand
Work Schedule
Austin Bergstrom International Airport is one of the most stringently noise-controlled airports in the
United States. Reagan National's nighttime noise rules are among the most restrictive in the country,
and aircraft noise regulations restrict the working hours of the airport. Therefore, work hours for this
position are consist with AM and PM shifts, Sunday through Saturday with two consecutive days off.
Most employees are required to work weekends and holidays. Specific work schedules will be
determined upon successful completion of your initial training. Currently, AUS is offering part-time
schedules:
‣ There are two part-time shifts at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport: AM (5:00 -10:00; there is
a maximum of 25 hours a week.) PM (13:00 -18:00; there is a maximum of 25 hours a week).
‣ There is a five day work week for all shifts including weekends and holidays; as well as rotating
days off every 4 weeks. However, there is a possibility that schedules may change depending on
operational needs of the airport. Employee would be given a pay period notice.
Parking
‣ Employee parking is $240.00 (2010 fiscal year) a year. An employee parking permit may be
purchased on the second week of training once testing has been successfully completed and an
airport badge is obtained.
‣ There is an employee parking lot available with shuttle bus service to and from the airport.
Benefits
As a federal employee you are eligible for benefits as a full-time and part-time federal employee. The
Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program has many plans to choose from and all at very
reasonable rates, which can be paid from pre-tax income. In addition, to further promote employee
wellness and affordable health coverage, part-time TSA Transportation Security Officers (TSO’s) are
able to take advantage of reduced FEHB premiums. TSA will pay the maximum government
contribution allowed for health benefits under the TSA Health Benefit Incentive for Part-Time TSO’s. All
part-time TSO’s will pay the same lower cost for federal health benefits as full-time employees. This
means that TSA pays a greater portion of FEHB premium costs for part-time TSO’s. If offered a position
with TSA, you should make sure that you ask for and receive a full explanation of the benefits you are
eligible for, before accepting a job offer.
Training
‣ Employment is contingent upon successfully completing the required training period and initial
certification testing (a series of tests on the second week of training).
‣ Participation in training is considered to be full-time, and you will be paid accordingly for the
hours spent in training. Training is, Monday -Friday from 8:30 AM -5:00 PM for a mandatory of
13 days (this is for both part-time and full-time employees).
Uniforms
Uniforms are provided to employees by TSA, and will remain the property of TSA upon separation.
You will be fitted for your new uniforms during your orientation session. It is the responsibility of each
employee to arrive at work with a clean and neat uniform, and adhere to the TSA Uniform Guidelines.
Employees must provide their own plain black leather shoes with non-slip soles (no athletic footwear
will be allowed).
