48 Chapter 3: Installing the VCode VCode User Guide Connecting to the VCode with HyperTerminal Introduction This topic describes how to use HyperTerminal to open a serial connection to the VCode. You must do this before you can change the VCode’s IP address. For more information, see “About manually setting the VCode’s IP address” on page 47. About HyperTerminal HyperTerminal is a program that allows you to communicate with the VCode across a serial cable. The program was installed as part of your Windows operating system. Before you start Before connecting to the VCode, make sure that no other application is using the same serial port. For example, if you have recently reprogrammed a VCode bar code reader, you may still have an open serial connection on the same port. To close the connection, correctly close the software application that is using the connection. Opening a connection To connect to the VCode: 1. In Windows, navigate to Start > Programs or All Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal. The Connection Description dialog box opens. 2. In the Name text box, type a simple, one-word name to give the connection, and click OK. The Connect To dialog box opens.

Select the following values in the list boxes of the Properties dialog box. Setting Value Bits per second 57600 Data bits 8 Parity None Stop bits 1 Flow control None 6. Click OK. A serial connection is made to the VCode and HyperTerminal presents a blank screen.
