About manually setting the VCode’s IP address
Introduction
This topic gives an overview of the process used to manually set the
VCode’s IP address. Do not confuse this process with manually setting
the computer network card’s IP address.
To learn how this topic fits into the overall process of setting up an
Ethernet network, see “Ethernet networking workflows” on page 39.
Why do this
The VCode is set up at the factory to work with an Ethernet network that
automatically assigns IP addresses. If you plan to use Ethernet to
connect to the VCode but do not want to set up DHCP server software to
automatically assign the VCode’s IP address, you will need to
reconfigure the VCode’s firmware to assign an IP address manually.
Process overview
Even though your goal is to set up an Ethernet connection, the only way
to change the VCode’s IP address is to temporarily connect to the VCode
with a serial cable. The overall process is:
1. Physically connect a serial cable between the computer and the
VCode.
2. Use HyperTerminal to open a communication connection to the
VCode.
3. Change the IP address of the VCode in the firmware’s user interface.
4. Disconnect the serial cable.
5. Set up the Ethernet network.
