20 Chapter 2: VCode orientation VCode User Guide To work with a label format in the label editor of VCode Diagnostics, you load the format into memory from either the printer or a label format file. To avoid losing changes that you make to a label format when you turn off the VCode, you must save the format back to the printer or drive. Do not confuse the terms bar code label format and field format. A field format determines the printed appearance of a field (not the whole label) and is a part of a label field data definition. For example, a field format may be 8pt Monospace Bold for a text field or Code 39 for a bar code field. To summarize the relationship, a bar code label format contains sets of label field data, each of which contains a field format definition. Do not confuse label format files with data source files. Data source files contain the actual data that will be printed on the label. Label editor The label editor is a user interface feature that represents what a bar code label will look like when printed. It allows you to drag fields around and position them wherever you like. The following example shows how a label will print when the word “Test” is represented in field 1 as a text field and in field 2 as a bar code field that uses the code 128 symbology. Field 1 Field 2 The next example is the same except that the words “Test Label” are used for both fields. Notice that the bar code is longer because the amount of text encoded is greater. In this last example, the word “Test” is printed as a text field and bar code field using the code 39 symbology. If you compare this with the first example, which also used the word “Test” you can see that the different symbology makes a different bar code pattern.
Chapter 2: VCode orientation VCode User Guide 21 The labelling process Process The following sequence of events happens when you start a print-andapply command: 1. The media moves backwards so that the label onto which the bar code will be printed is positioned under the printer head. 2. The label is printed. 3. The label taken sensor provides the feedback that the label was successfully removed. 4. The media moves forwards to a position where the top of the printed label is just beyond the apex of the tear bar. 5. The applicator head, pointing towards the printer, extends until the vacuum cups touch the label. 6. A vacuum is created in the applicator head’s suction cups to grip the label. 7. The head retracts with the label held by the suction cups. 8. The head rotates until it is perpendicular to any side of the plate on the plate stage. 9. The head extends, touching the skirt of the plate. 10. Air is pushed through the suction cups, breaking the vacuum seal and providing a force needed for the label to adhere to the plate. 11.
