About test printing and applying
Introduction
There are several different ways to perform a test print of a label. This
topic helps you to choose between them.
When to do a test
print
Perform a test print when first setting up your VCode, after creating a
new format, or when troubleshooting printing problems.
Testing will allow you to correct problems such as:
❑ Overlapping fields
❑ Bar codes that are too large for the label
❑ Missing bar codes, caused by magnification values that are too small
❑ Text fields that are too small to read
Test printing and
print jobs
The settings that you use for test printing have no impact on the settings
that define bar code labels when running a print job.
Printing options
You can perform test prints from two locations in VCode Diagnostics:
the Label Editor tab and the Testing tab.
If you want to test print...
One label that uses the formats
currently specified in the label editor,
and do not want to apply the label to
a plate.
(This is the best option to use at the
time you create a label format.)
One or more identical labels, using
any format stored in the printer, and
do not want to apply the labels to a
plate.
One or more identical labels, using
any format stored in the printer, and
want to apply them to specified sides
of one or more plates.
Each printed label is the same as
every other because you can only
define one set of fields for the test.
A batch of different labels, using any
format stored in the printer, and want
to apply them to specified sides of
one or more plates.
Then...
Print from the Label Editor tab.
See “Printing one label from the
Label Editor page” on page 100.
Print from the Testing tab.
See “Printing one label from the
Testing page” on page 101.
Print and apply from the Testing tab.
See “Printing and applying multiple
labels to a plate” on page 103.
Create a schema and run a print job
in PlateTag.
See “Running a print job” on
page 107.
