Rural R&D was put under the spotlight this year
with a Productivity Commission Review looking at
the government’s return on investment in this area.
Cotton Australia led the cotton industry’s submission
and also coordinated a cross-sectoral group including
over 20 commodity groups in compiling a joint submission.
Cotton Australia was disappointed in the
draft findings that suggested major funding cuts, and
has geared up for a sustained fight to ensure research
dollars continue to flow.
myBMP
In the area of sustainability, the revised myBMP
program was launched to industry, following extensive
grower feedback and improvements to this
industry sustainability flagship. The improved system
has removed impediments to grower uptake,
encouraging greater on-ground adoption of sound
environmental practices and giving the community
confidence that the cotton industry is managing its
natural assets efficiently. A new Human Resources
module was added to ensure a better and safer workplace
environment on cotton farms, with the benefits
set to filter through to the wider community.
myBMP basically takes the original BMP manual
and replaces it with a user friendly, up to the minute
web based tool. The program is designed to be a one
stop shop for growers and industry people to access
the latest information and research, find solutions to
challenges that may arise and provide a wide variety
of tools and features to help industry members operate
at optimal efficiency.
