C O P Update
There are lots of things happening in the C O P Program at this time; and things are progressing well. Of the dozen
COP Candidates from Class 27, we have four new COPs, the County has one new COP; and the rest are in their ridealong
stage. For the most part, they are eager, enthusiastic and capable; some have joined us in several of our events
including the Blue Bell Creameries Parking Assignments on Mondays and Fridays in July. No doubt you will see many
out at the Hot Nights and Cool Tunes events in July.
As you all know, we are changing our uniforms to a navy blue color to match our Police Officers, except, we will
not have the red piping on the pant leg and epaulets. We also changed the patch on the sleeves to match our Police
counterparts. This process should hopefully only take another month or two to fully implement. I think everyone will
be pleased with the final results. While this change was mandated by the Police Chief, I think it was long overdue and
a step in a positive direction.
We were also asked if we would like to change the graphics on our patrol units. Well, we will have to see if we can
come up with anything better. We have several members trying to draw up new ideas for us to choose from. But as of
this date, we have come to realize that there are no budding artist in our group. Perhaps we will be surprised at a
later date with a rendering suitable for reproduction.
The only other thing to report is that volunteers are still needed for all of our upcoming assignments. And as always,
we will be asking for anyone who can assist with traffic control at Brenham Elementary School during the school
year. We will keep you informed of any new assignments, at least monthly through e-mails (Upcoming COP Events);
and you may be receiving phone calls from Dorothy if assignments are not filled quickly. Don’t forget about Hot Nights
and Cool Tunes, every Saturday evening in July; it’s our most entertaining and easiest event of the year.
I will see you all at our meeting this Monday. Enjoy your summer!

President’s Message-Who We Are
As we welcome new members into our organization each year and the makeup of
our membership has changed significantly over the past several, I’d like to take a
moment to briefly review and summarize-Who We Are.
The Brenham Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAA) is a Texas Non-
Profit Corporation, recognized by and registered with the Secretary of State in August,
1991. We are also a qualified Section 501(c)(3)-Charitable Organization recognized
under Federal law and regulated by the IRS. Our purpose is to enhance relations
between the community and the BPD, and to assist all law enforcement agencies
through various means including but not limited to COP program(s). Our current
membership totals 118 of which roughly 60% reside in the City of Brenham. About
50% of our members participate in the BPD-COP program, 5% in the WCSO-COP program
and 45% are members in general. Last year the CPAAA raised nearly $18,000
through its various fund raising activities.
Our most visible activity, by far, is in partnership with the BPD through promotion
and support of the BPD-COP program. With BPD we share oversight responsibility for
one of the longest standing, successful and most widely recognized such programs
in the State. BPD provides operational function control, guidance and funding and
CPAAA provides member volunteers and funding to attract, motivate and retain participants.
BPD-COP participants provide both Administrative office and Patrol Division
support in the areas of routine patrol, BISD traffic control, civic event traffic
and crowd control and 24/7 on-call support for major traffic or weather related incidents.
This activity not only helps the BPD contain its overhead and operating cost
but allows the Patrol Officers to better serve the community by focusing more of
their attention on law enforcement and “catching the crooks”.
CPAAA, through the BPD-COP program, also accepts donations in recognition of the
increased public safety resulting from COP availability and experience with traffic
control and parking during high volume traffic events. Last year the BPD-COP’s donation
receipts were in excess of $8000 included in the CPAAA total above. That
represents a lot of hours, in addition to those spent directly supporting BPD, parking
and directing traffic in all kinds of weather from cold and raining to hot and
eating dust. The result was a banner year for BPD-COP fundraising and for the first
time provided sufficient self-funding for the program’s leadership team to broaden
support and recognition of its participants in pursuit of the program’s goals and objectives
as stated above. Great job guys and gals for an outstanding year of hard
work well done!

Not only would we not be who we are, we could not possibly be where we are
without the commitment, dedication and support of the BPD for the past 22 years.
Chris Jackson, our current BPD Liaison, keeps us all informed on happenings within
the Department and his infectious enthusiasm for our joint purpose and cause
make him an invaluable contributor and resource to the CPAAA in addition to being
a vital component of the BPD-COP leadership team.
On behalf of the Officers and Directors of the CPAAA we consider it an honor and a
privilege to serve you as your elected officials and remain humbled by, focused on
and committed to the duties and responsibilities you have entrusted us with. Thank
you all for your support and hats off to a truly great organization and team!
JUST GROWING A LITTLE HUMOR…..
By Clyde Averitt
It’s been quite a few years since this story took place. But, I feel there is a lesson to be learned by telling it.
Somewhere in the 80’s I bought a garden tiller from a local gentleman for $50.00. He had used it to mix cement,
so needless to say I had a little cleaning up to do before using it. After a while I got all the cement out
of the tines and was ready to begin my hobby of gardening.
The tiller worked fine year after year for about five years and I had a few nice gardens if I must say so myself.
Then one day I was tilling away and the tiller quit running. I pulled, and pulled, and pulled until I was
blue in the face and very tired not to mention disgusted. I pushed the tiller into the back area of my garage
and that is where it stayed for about three years. I bought a few Earth Boxes and did my gardening in them
for the next few years and didn’t need the tiller.
One day my son called me and ask if he could use the tiller being as how I wasn’t using it no longer. I told
him it quit running and I had not fooled with it since. But, if he felt like messing with it, he was welcome. He
said I think I will come and get it and see if I can get it
running again. I told him OK, I would get it out of the garage
and he could come get it. When he arrived I was in the
Thanks Shawna for this funny
process of showing him how it would not start. He asks
me if I had checked the gas. I told him not lately…didn’t
need to. He said he would go a get some gas so we could
try a see if we could get it to start. When he returned with
the gas, we poured some into the gas tank…pulled out the
choke….and pulled on the starting rope. Well, what do
you know…the tiller went putt, putt, and putt and started
without any problem for the next few years? We both had
a good laugh about the time “Dad didn’t check the gas in
the tiller”. So…I guess there is a lesson learned and the
moral to this story is DON’T GIVE UP UNTIL YOU
HAVE CHECK YOUR GAS TANK.
