Statewide School Breakfast Challenge Winners Announced
During the 2011-12 school year, Cooperative Extension and the
Department of Public Instruction challenged Wisconsin schools to
increase their student participation in school breakfast programs.
Extension’s Family Living Programs and the Department of Public
Instruction have collaborated to help school districts start new breakfast
programs or improve existing ones throughout the state with the goal of
giving all students access to a nutritious breakfast.
“Providing all school age students with the opportunity to eat breakfast
has many benefits including students who are more alert, less disruptive,
and who perform better academically,” says Amy Alvig, school breakfast
specialist with Family Living Programs.
To succeed at the challenge, schools with an existing school breakfast
program had to increase breakfast participation by 50 percent. Schools that
previously did not offer breakfast were given a goal of around 38 percent
participation (based on statewide averages for breakfast programs).
The 2012 Wisconsin school BreakfasT
challenge Winners are:
--Brillion Middle School, Brillion Public Schools
--Hillsboro Elementary School, Hillsboro School District
--Jerome Case High School, Racine Unified School District
--Pittsville Elementary School, Pittsville Public Schools
--Royall High School, Royall School District
--Sandhill Elementary School, Stoughton Area Schools
These winners will receive a small grant award in support of continued
improvement of their breakfast program and a banner to display at their
school.
Overall, Wisconsin school breakfast participation still falls short in school
and student participation compared to national averages.
“The breakfast challenge provides encouragement for schools to start
a breakfast program if they currently don’t offer one, or for schools to
develop strategies that increase student participation in their existing
programs,” explains Alvig.
Eating breakfast not only benefits children’s ability to learn, but also
improves the quality of a child’s diet, may decrease their risk of being
overweight and improves their mood and behavior.
Not all students eat breakfast at home. “Students often cite not having
enough time in the morning to eat at home, not being hungry first thing
in the morning and not having enough food at home as the main reasons
for not eating breakfast. School breakfast programs strive to overcome
these barriers and ensure that school age children have access to a
nutritious meal,” adds Alvig.
First graders explored the Brillion Nature Center looking for
spiders and found themselves having to get through a spider’s
web without touching the web.
The second graders at Brillion
Elementary School just
completed a Flat Stanley unit
that incorporated map skills.
Here Mrs. Fischer’s class is
shown with student teacher,
“flat bodies” before they sent
them through the mail. They
will anxiously await the return
of the “flat bodies” to
see what kinds of adventures
they took and to map out the
places they visited!
Jump Rope for Heart
On Feb 10, students jumped all over heart disease and stroke by
participating in Jump Rope For Heart/Hoops For Heart. The students
had fun and have raised
$7,000 for the American
Heart Association, which
funds research, programs
and education to fight
heart disease and stroke,
our nation’s No. 1 and No.
3 killers. The school will
receive $400 for playground
equipment from the
American Heart Association
for raising over $5,000.
“I’m so pleased with the
success of this year’s event,”
said Dave Burg, Jump Rope
TumbleBooks Available
The TumbleBooks library is now open! TumbleBooks are available
for all Brillion Elementary school students to use at school, home,
or anywhere they have internet access. What can you expect to see
in the TumbleBooks library? The TumbleBooks library is a collection
of e-books called TumbleBooks (animated, talking picture books)
which can be viewed from many web accessible devices (computer,
tablet or iPad). The TumbleBooks library also includes Read-
Alongs (chapter books with sentence highlighting and narration
but no animation), TumbleTV which consists of pre-set playlists
of a sequence of books, and many Tumble Puzzles & Games for
elementary students. Look for the link to TumbleBooks on the
Rocket Launch
Calling All Three Year Olds...
Screening is an opportunity for you and your child to meet the 4 year
old kindergarten staff and share any concerns you may have. It’s a
chance to get a sneak peek at the facilities and learn about services
that may be available to your family. It also allows us to become more
familiar with your child and help us plan for how to best meet his/her
needs once she starts school.
Dates have been set for next year’s 3 year old screening. If you have
a child who lives in the Brillion school district and will be 3 years of age
On May 1st the 5/6 Multiage classroom students participated in a rocket
launch. Throughout the year, students worked on making a rocket while
learning about the forces that act upon them and discovering the process of
making designs and models. The launch was a culmination of a lot of hard
work, determination, and learning throughout the year. Some rockets went
off without a hitch but some didn’t make it off the launchpad. In attendance
were brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, moms, dads, and grandparents as well
as teachers Mrs. Heimke and Mr. Van Thiel and Middle School Principal Ms.
Hatch. All in all it was a valuable learning experience that will hopefully
continue throughout the coming years.
before September 1, 2012 please mark your calendars. The screening
will be conducted on three dates during the 2012-13 school year and
can be scheduled between 7:30 and 11:30 on any of the following
Tuesdays:
September 25, 2012; March 5, 2013 or May 14, 2013. Call Mrs. Bastian
in the elementary office to schedule your appointment @ 756-3624.
Thunder Cake
Mrs. Christianson’s “Working With Young Children” class recently
used some of their child development knowledge as
they read recipes and books to Mr. Rajkovich’s second graders.
After reading Patricia Polaco’s book, “Thunder Cake”,
the second grade readers helped the high school students
make “Thunder Cake”. The treat was named “Thunder Cake”
because you gather the ingredients and bake it as a spring
storm draws near. By the time the storm arrives the cake is
ready to be eaten and the thunder and lightning are forgotten!
Check out the book to see what the “secret” ingredient
is! A great read to find in the library this summer!
Timber Rattlers
The 4th and 5th grades Lions Choir sang the National Anthem at the Wisconsin Timber
Rattler game on Thursday, May 17 as part of Brillion Elementary Family Night.
Maple Syrup
Second graders from the Brillion Elementary School visited the Brillion Nature Center to learn about the process of making maple
syrup. When asked the question “Does it hurt the tree to be tapped?”, naturalist Louie Kohlberg demonstrated the process on Hannah
Shimek, a stand-in tree. (When they saw the drill, students soon discovered that it would hurt the tree a little to be tapped,
but they learned the trees are able to heal from it.)
Students from Mrs. Fischer’s class look on as the sap flows from a freshly tapped tree.
Celebrating Middle School Recognition Night
Ann Hatch, Middle School Principal
Eighth graders and their families gathered together at Brillion Middle
School on May 31, to celebrate the last three years of school. Teachers
throughout the middle school gave various awards and highlighted students
successes. As noted throughout the ceremony, this eighth grade
class has been tremendous. As a class they have demonstrated great
character and enthusiasm. The class took a moment during the ceremony
to remember Reese Williams. Trae Williams, a sixth grader, accepted
the award in memory of his brother who would have been an eighth
grader this year. Tammy Williams addressed the class, thanking them for
their thoughts and support over the years.
Garner Kohrell was named the Outstanding Eighth Grade Boy and Mattea
Schlender was named the Outstanding Eighth Grade girl by the American
Legion. Libby Hanson and Allison Degner were chosen for the A+
award. The award is given to a student or students who most exemplify
hard work and a positive attitude throughout middle school.
Each subject area teacher awarded students for their achievement in their
Free the Children Walk
On May 23rd, the students of Brillion Middle School walked in support
of disadvantaged children around the world. We raised $1,476 dollars!
This fundraising effort began during 4th quarter as the 7th graders were
involved in a community service project in advisory class. Everyone was
helping with some kind of community service project, whether it was in
school or somewhere else in the world. Mrs. Olson’s advisory decided to
help people somewhere around the world. We organized a walk to help a
charity foundation called Free The Children. The Free The Children foundation
is a charity that helps children and their families in many countries
around the world. The foundation supplies families with clean water,
school supplies, farm animals, and schools.
Congratulations to the class of 2016. Good Luck in High School!
One hundred and sixty students participated in the three mile walk
around the city of Brillion. The money we raised could supply thirty
families with goats, or fifteen families with clean water, or sixty kids
with school kits, textbooks, and supplies, or furniture and textbooks
for three schools. We walked a little over three miles which is about
how far a woman has to walk from their home to a watering hole in Africa
to retrieve clean water. A special thanks to those who participated
and to those who donated!
T.A.G.E.D. - Transition - Pride
Teaching About Good Educated Decisions
The Middle School and High School TAGED group finished out the school year with a bang. TAGED is an acting troupe that develops and
performs skits that address important issues that students experience. The students involved in TAGED work hard to create skits that engage
and entertain the audience, as well as send a message that helps to encourage positive life choices and decision making.
The 8 th grade transition day up at the High took place May 24 th , and started off with some entertainment from theThe High School TAGED
group. TAGED performed a couple fun, humorous skits, addressing the dreaded myths of High School. They finished off their performance
with a dance skit that had the audience rolling in laughter. The 8 th graders finished out their transition morning getting a tour from Freshman
volunteers, who also were available to answer any needed questions from the 8 th graders. Overall, the transition morning was a success!
Middle School TAGED performing Sadie Hawkins Dance Transition Day – TAGED performance
The 5 th grade transition day at the the Middle School took place May 31 st , and also started off with some up beat fun skits from the Middle
School TAGED group. With an hour long performance, TAGED had the 5 th graders engaged, entertained, laughing, and wondering, “How do I
get into this group?” After the TAGED performance, 5 th graders headed down to the library for a Q and A session with a 6 th grade student panel.
After getting all of their questions answered, the 5 th graders split into groups where they were able to
meet their 6 th grade teachers, get a tour of the Middle School, learn and practice lock opening, and get
some information about a 6 th grade project. The 5 th grade transition morning was a great success! The
Middle School is excited to welcome their next year’s 6 th graders to Middle School!
Middle School TAGED performing Lunch Lady Song
The Middle School and High School TAGED groups also performed some
fun, entertaining skits for our Middle School pride rallies this school
year. We have four pride rallies throughout the school year, which
give our students an opportunity to show their Brillion pride! TAGED
wrapped up the pride rally on the last day of school with a couple
of their old time favorite skits. Overall, TAGED had a successful year,
peforming skits for various school events and occasions! We are excited
to see what TAGED has in store for our students next year!
One of the district programs that is fairly low profile,
yet seems very successful is our Big Buddy
Program at the high school. In the program,
high school students go down to the elementary
school once a week to spend time with younger
students. High school students volunteer one
hour of study hall time per week to spend with
their little buddy. This is the fourth year the program
has been in place and this year has been
by far the most successful, with 33 high school
students spending time in the elementary
Big Buddies Program a Hit
I took a group of 14 freshmen to Steven’s Point to compete in Solar
Olympics. We competed in the following events: Solar Jeopardy,
Solar Sculpture, Solar Photography, Solar Car Race, Solar Cooker,
and Solar Hot Water Heater. The team spent a lot of time preparing
for the competition
and we ended up taking
home a gold medal for the
Solar Hot Water Heater!
The team working on the
Solar Hot Water Heater
included Daniel Saubert,
Connor Olson, and Jonathon
Wittmann.
Jessica Peterson
Solar Olympics
school. The program was originated because we
know what a powerful influence teens can have
on younger children. To young children, teachers
and parents may seem pretty “cool” but teens
are a whole lot cooler. Our initial thought was
simply that putting positive teenage role models
in the elementary school would be great for
the younger children. After four years, it seems
that we were right and we were wrong. We
were right in that these students have been a
positive influence in the elementary school. We
were wrong in the sense
that we didn’t know that
the high students would
get just as much out of
it as the young children.
These high school volunteers
are often forming
real and meaningful
relationships with their
“buddies” and really look forward to their time
together. We have even had high school helpers,
on occasion, go to after school activities just to
see their little buddies in action.
If positive connections
and relationships are at the
heart of a small community,
then the Big Buddies Program
seems to fit right in.
High School Forensics
The Brillion High School forensics team enjoyed much success this season
in a variety of speaking and performance categories. Students competed
in the conference meet in January to prepare for February’s subdistrict
meet. All of Brillion’s participants earned the necessary scores to move
on to the district competition in March held at Oshkosh West High School,
and nine of our ten participants earned the necessary scores to advance
to the State Speech Festival in April. The first three meets allowed the
students to perform their piece three times, but the pressure was on at
state where they were only given one chance to perform. Three students
earned gold medals for their perfect scores at state this year: Shannon
Behnke, prose; Adolfo Vargas, prose; and Jordan Mentzel, solo acting humorous.
The following students earned bronze medals at state this year:
Monica Geiser, Rebecca Phipps, Avery Kohrell, Deborah Luna, and Reegan
Wallander. Congratulations to all the participants!

High School News
As we look back on the 2011/12 school year,
it was a year of many changes and many
successes. We started the year with six new
teachers: Agriculture, Spanish, Business,
Science, Social Studies and Computer Science.
They all brought a new perspective to
our school and an enthusiasm for what they
teach. They all ended up as positive additions
to our teaching staff. Though there
were many other changes and successes
that we experienced this year, I want to
highlight a few.
Academics
Business: This year we added a new emphasis
in our business department. We offered a
marketing class and started a DECA Club for
our business and marketing students. DECA
prepares emerging student leaders and entrepreneurs
in marketing, finance, hospitality
and management in high schools and colleges
around the globe. As business has become
more global, competition has increased and
marketing is a skill that our young people entering
the business field need to learn more
about to be successful.
Computer Science and Agriculture: In addition
to this year’s new business classes
we added new classes in Computer Science
and Agriculture for next year. In Computer
Science we added Advanced Video Editing,
Game Design and Advanced Computer Science
Applications. In Agriculture we added
Animal Veterinary Science and changed a
class emphasis from Animal Science to Agriscience
resulting in a more direct study of the
connection between agriculture and science.
Science and Technology: This year we hosted
three High Mileage Vehicle teams. One of the
teams using a diesel engine donated by the
Kohler Company ran their vehicle in competition
on cooking oil which they converted into
biodiesel fuel. Their vehicle averaged 100
MPH on the converted cooking oil.
A group of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering
and math) students designed and
built a Trailercam. Using solar panels donated
by WPS, they designed a portable communications
trailer, powered by solar power
and solar chargeable batteries in which they
could live stream events over the internet
from places where there was no electricity.
The team built some wood duck houses in
late winter, placed them in the Brillion Marsh
and where able to live stream video of a duck
which nested in one of the houses. They were
able to play the live video from the time of
the duck laying the eggs until they hatched
and the ducklings left the nest. The activity
was watched by thousands of people around
the state and country. The activity turned out
to be an outstanding educational experience
for the students involved integrating math,
science, environmental, computer, carpentry
and problem solving skills.
Look for the Trailercam to be part of the Brillion
Electric Parade this summer.
Technology
This year we started a one-to-one computer
initiative with the freshmen class. Each freshman
received a Toshiba Netbook that they will
use for four years of high school. The initiative
was a great success allowing students more
opportunities to pursue a 21st Century education.
Next year’s freshmen will also receive a Netbook.
The plan is to continue this initiative
so that by the 2014/15 school year all of Brillion
High School students will have access to
their own computing device. Because of this
change, next year’s Spanish I and II students
(mostly freshmen and sophomores) will be using
an online Spanish textbook. This will be the
first online text that we use in our school. As
more students get access to their own computing
devices, we feel that online textbooks will
be the way of the future for all subjects.
Athletics
For the first time in the history of Brillion
High School, the Boys Basketball team won a
state championship. The team displayed an
extraordinary level of hustle and teamwork
to win the championship. It was a chance for
the entire school, the student body, the band
and the pom squad to shine on the state platform.
It was a proud moment for the entire
community and surrounding
We had two athletic college scholarships this
year. One went to Kylie Moxley for basketball
to attend Michigan Tech and one Ryan Reinke
to UWGB in golf.
Mike Wagner
If anyone graduated from Brillion High School
in the past 30 years and participated in band,
they had Mr. Wagner as a teacher. Mr. Wagner
is retiring this year. We will miss him.
Good luck to him in the future.
