The Building Trades Award is given to a student that has developed a

broad comprehension of production technology, including manufacturing,

construction, and basic electricity/electronics concepts. The following

building trades.

The Electronics Award is given to students who have demonstrated excellent

achievement in the principles and practice of designing, building, and

working with electronic circuits. These students have shown initiative,

motivation, and exceptional knowledge of the subject matter by assisting

fellow students and the classroom teacher. These students have worked

towards developing high standards of technical expertise in the area of

electronics.

The Project Lead the Way Technology Achievement Award is presented to

a senior who has a distinguished academic record and who has completed

the five-unit PLTW sequence. This student has demonstrated outstanding

leadership and interpersonal qualities in the classroom. While participating

on the Churchville-Chili US FIRST Robotics Team, this student is a role

model for all other technology students.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH

The Daniel Myslivecek Award is given to the male and female physical

education students who achieved the highest score on the PACER portion

of the Fitnessgram Physical Fitness Test. In the Fall of 2005, Daniel

achieved a score of 100 on the PACER test. This is an outstanding score

for any individual. However, Daniel at the time was completing a very

aggressive form of chemotherapy to help fight cancer. A few days prior to

the test, Daniel finished one of these treatments. It was Daniel’s choice to

take the test and he scored 100 laps. When Daniel was asked why he chose

to work at such a high level under these circumstances, his response was,

I always wanted to get a 100 on this test. This award honors Daniel’s

courage, perseverance and his personal drive to do his best in every

situation. Daniel passed away in July, 2006, but his spirit and his courage

will live on for years to come.

The Health Education Award recognizes those students who are creative,

who have outstanding problem-solving skills, who demonstrate high

academic standards, and whose participation, effort, and attitude exemplify

positive leadership and citizenship. They demonstrate responsibility by

actively participating in class, being on time for class, completing their

homework assignments, and preparing daily for class work.

Future Educators Club Award – The Future Educators’ Club is an

internship program at Churchville-Chili High School which promotes

teaching as a career. This award is given to a senior who has demonstrated

an interest in teaching and has shown outstanding attributes necessary for

this profession. This award is sponsored by the Churchville-Chili Education

Association. This recipient will receive an engraved pen set.

Gates-Chili Rotary Club Award – This monetary award is given

to a senior who has strong academics, is pursuing post-secondary

education, has volunteered his or her time to helping others, and

has shown leadership ability. This student has lived by the motto

“Service Above Self.”

bound senior in good academic standing who has exhibited exemplary

chairperson.

committee, this monetary award is given to a senior in good academic

a member of the Churchville-Chili High School Class of 1997.

The Lynd Award – Selected by committee, this monetary award is given

to a senior in good academic standing who has demonstrated outstanding

leadership in school and community affairs and has shown a commitment

to improving the lives of others. This award is named after John Lynd, a

former Churchville-Chili Social Studies teacher.

Make All The Difference Scholarship These scholarships, funded through

the Monroe 2-Orleans Educational Trust Fund, are awarded to current or

past graduates of non-traditional programs, or to qualified current students

who want to prepare for careers working with special needs students.

These scholarships are given to help students continue their education

after high school.

National Merit Scholarships as a result of a competitive nation-wide

one percent of the college-bound seniors in the nation.”

in either Equine or Veterinary Studies. This award is given in memory of

Bridget Kate Publicover, a 2003 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School

and a student at Morrisville College in the Equine Studies Program.

memory of Karen Pusey, who was a nurse practitioner at Strong Hospital

and an instructor of Nursing at Nazareth College, awarded to a senior who

will be entering college to study nursing.

graduating senior who is planning to enter the field of education. The

recipient must be in the top half of the graduating class, attending a four year

award is given to the senior who has demonstrated excellence in English

for four years and achieved a top score on the New York State English

Language Arts Assessment. The award is given in honor of former English

seniors who have high academic achievement and who are planning on

The dos and don’ts

of an effective resume

In today’s highly competitive job

market, millions of people are preparing

resumes in an effort to find

employment. Before jumping headlong

into a job search, it is important

to consider the type of information

that is appropriate to include on your

resume.

Jeannine L. Moentmann, paralegal

and adjunct Instructor at Brown

Mackie College - St. Louis, teaches

students how to write effective resumes

that make potential employers

want to learn more about them.

Moentmann specialized in employment

law for six of her 15 years as a

paralegal. In addition to her ongoing

legal work, she currently teaches law

and business courses in the Criminal

Justice program at Brown Mackie

College - St. Louis. “Most people

think the purpose of a resume is to

get a job, but the real purpose of a

resume is to get the interview,” she

says. “A resume is the employer’s first

look at you. It must stand out among

the potentially hundreds they will

receive for an open position.”

Each resume should be tailored to

the individual job description. You

can highlight specific areas of your

background that target the position,”

Moentmann continues. The Bureau of

Labor Statistics supports this recommendation

in the “Occupational

Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition,”

advising applicants to emphasize the

experience, accomplishments, education

and skills that most closely fit

the job they want.

Resume content

As you compile your information,

keep in mind the following sections

available to showcase your qualifications.

*Header: Include your name, address,

phone number and email address.

“Your email address should not

amuse or confuse a potential employer,”

states Moentmann. “I recommend

creating a professional sounding

email identity for your search.”

* Career objective: Optional; a brief

statement of the contributions you

can make to a specific organization. A

well-written career objective can add

value to a resume; however, it can

also disqualify candidates if the objective

does not match the job description.

* Summary of qualifications: Optional;

an overview of your most valuable

career talents, skills and accomplishments.

Leading with a summary

makes the resume easier to read and

ensures your most impressive qualifications

are not overlooked.

* Employment history: Included in

most resume formats; add each relevant

employer’s name and location,

and dates of employment, job title,

significant duties, accomplishments

and promotions.

* Skills and accomplishments: Optional;

highlight relevant skills,

including software or equipment

proficiencies, and aptitudes such as

self-motivation, working well under

stress, teamwork, etc.

* Education: Include college information;

omit high school information,

especially among older candidates.

* Honors and activities: Optional;

highlight professional and educational

accolades, membership in professional

organizations and volunteer

activities.

* Personal data: Optional; consists of

hobbies and interests; exercise caution

when deciding the information

you want to share. Federal and state

laws prohibit employers from asking

questions about race, age, marital

status, ethnicity and religion. It is

not appropriate to include this type of

information.

* References: A separate document

that lists three to five professional individuals

that can positively discuss

your qualifications, skills and abilities.

You can now choose a resume style

that best highlights your value as an

ideal candidate for the open position

you are seeking.

Chronological resume

The chronological resume is the most

common format, with a focus on job

history. The most recent positions

are listed first. “The chronological

style works well for someone who has

experience in the field they wish to

find employment,” says Moentmann.

Many people choose to include a

career objective in the chronological

resume. “If used, it should be concise,

customized for each job opening and

focused on how you can contribute to

the organization,” Moentmann says.

Functional resume

The functional resume highlights

groups of skill sets instead of listing

chronological career experience with

each employer. You can categorize key

job skills and past accomplishments

under relevant headings, such as

supervisory and management skills,

computer skills, etc. “Each heading

would include a summary of appropriate

skills and accomplishments,”

continues Moentmann. “Functional

resumes work well when a candidate’s

skills are transferrable from

one field to another or when entering

the work force for the first time.”

Combination resume

Some applicants prefer to blend the

two types of resumes. The combination

resume highlights valuable skills

and accomplishments as the functional

resume does. It also includes

an employment history as in the

chronological resume. “It’s a good way

to highlight capabilities and capture

the reader to make them want to look

further,” Moentmann says. “For those

who are switching careers, it’s an

opportunity to explain transferrable

skills.”

A resume is often a one-page document,

however it can extend to two

pages as years of experience grow. A

well-written resume reflects professionalism

and competence in your

chosen career. A good resume is also

never finished. “My own resume is

a constant work in progress,” says

Beth Pawley believes in art with an end.

“What I want to do in communicating with people

is putting things together that will help people to live

better. I want to have my art out there, but also have it

be functional,” said Pawley, Churchville-Chili’s Westside

News Award Winner.

Beth plans to attend Monroe Community College

where she will be able to earn her associate’s degree in

fine arts in one year before attending either Nazareth

or Rochester Institute of Technology in a graphic art

program.

Something that Pawley sees as a major challenge for

students her age is bullying. In her AP Psychology class

Beth learned a lot about the lasting effects of bullying

and how each person can work to help put an end to this

issue.

“We definitely don’t have to be that way,” she said.

Pawley sees a future with limitless possibilities,

thanks in large part to the support she receives from her

family.

“It helps knowing that I can be whatever I want to be

and it is up to me and God to get there,” she said.

Maddison Leiker, Spencerport

Maddison Leiker is intrigued by different cultures and

hopes to translate that interest into a career in international

business. The Spencerport Westside News Award

Winner will be attending the College at Brockport in the

fall with a major in International Business and a minor

in economics and foreign language.

Leiker is definitely a world class student. She maintains

high honor roll grades while taking Advanced

Placement coursework. Maddison has been involved in

cheerleading, lacrosse and DECA (a business club). She

also participated in the 3-1-3 program affiliated with the

College at Brockport in which high school students take

classes on the college’s campus.

“I’ve just always known what I want to do. I’ve had my

educational future planned since 7th grade,” Leiker said.

The daughter of Aaron and Tina Leiker (with brothers

Nicholas and Ethan) has always had an interest in

traveling overseas and has been to both Germany and

Denmark. The latter was an opportunity to meet many

family members face to face for the first time.

Maddison believes culture is something to treasure.

“Culture should be shared instead of judging people

based on how they look or speak,” Leiker said.

Leiker speaks multiple languages. She took French,

Spanish and Arabic while at Spencerport.

“Arabic was my favorite class at Spencerport… the

language is totally different than anything else and the

culture is fascinating,” she said.

Be prepared to someday hear the melodic voice of Thomas

Thurley III. Holley’s Westside News Award Winner

will be attending Genesee Community College in the fall

to take radio broadcasting. His career goal is to become a

radio deejay.

Thomas loves different styles of music with the exception

of country and classical. He prefers upbeat songs

and can list off many great bands and musical performers

that most people have never heard of.

This funny and outgoing senior has some important

advice for underclassmen.

“Take your schoolwork seriously as soon as you can,”

Thurley said. “The sooner you get it done the sooner

school ends.”

Tanner Jubenville, Kendall

Ladies and gentleman, we introduce to you the voice of

the Kendall Eagles – Tanner Jubenville!

This Westside News Award Winner first stoked his

passion for broadcasting by serving as the public address

announcer for Kendall basketball. Now, the son of Jeffrey

and Elizabeth Jubenville is getting ready to study

journalism and mass communication at St. Bonaventure

University.

Tanner was introduced to the idea of serving as an

announcer by his English teacher who also serves as the

high school’s athletic director.

“Every game was a great experience because it helped

me learn how to better myself,” said Jubenville. “It

raised my confidence

level every time I

did it.” Confidence

Society, competing

in Masterminds and

twice being elected

class president.

Tanner knows he

wants a career in

journalism, but whether he will be reporting from the

sidelines or alongside the White House remains to be

seen. His two professional role models are sportscaster

Jim Nance and political commentator Bill O’Reilly.

Jubenville admits that his passion for politics is not

something that too many of his friends share.

“I’m not one to follow a crowd,” said Tanner. “I like to

maintain a leadership role.” He knows that leading will

likely call him into traveling well beyond home, something

Kendall has prepared him to do.

“Kendall is very small, which has its pros and cons... It

makes me want to get out and experience the world, but

not forget where I came from,” said Jubenville.

Shannon Hogan, Brockport

Shannon Hogan, Brockport’s Westside News Award Winner,

can now add making the Section 5 softball finals to

her list of accomplishments.

No doubt, her teammates

were in a party mood after

a 1-0 victory, and Shannon

would be the perfect person

to host the festivities.

The daughter of Bryan and

Shari Hogan will be attending

SUNY Fredonia in the

fall with the goal of pursuing

a career in event planning.

“I really want to be a big

event planner for major

parties,” Shannon said. She

enjoys thinking through the

behind-the-scenes activities

that lead to big events. Hogan has attended several

concerts, her favorites being Justin Bieber and the Jonas

Brothers; and she thinks running the show from behind

the curtain would be a big thrill.

This quiet, but funny, high honor roll student looks

forward to meeting new people and learning new things

in college.

“I’m looking forward to being able to focus on what

is really important to me and to accomplishing bigger

things,” Hogan said. Shannon said she has been given a

good start at Brockport with great teachers who made

her time enjoyable.

Samantha Streeter, Byron-Bergen

While the news that she couldn’t be the Elba Onion

Queen really stunk, Samantha Streeter didn’t let that

get her down. And she has the crown to prove it.

News Award Winner is also

queen of the Genesee County

Fair.

“My friends have always

said I needed to be queen of

something,” said Streeter. “I

never thought I would win.”

Samantha is a winner in the

classroom, too. She is ranked

12th in her class while

participating in basketball,

cheerleading and track. She

has taken both college level

and advanced placement

courses.

In fact, one of her fondest

high school memories is getting the results back for her

AP history class. While she struggled mightily on the

exam, she earned a high enough grade to award her college

credit.

“I was in shock. That was such a huge reward for me. I

worked so hard,” Streeter said.

The daughter of Michael and Rhonda Streeter will attend

the University of Buffalo majoring in English with

a minor in education. She also hopes to receive a journalism

certificate. Samantha has gotten a taste for journalism

while serving as the editor of the school newspaper,

The Buzzette.

The older sister of Amanda, Sarah, and Alayna credits

her family, her friends and her colleagues at McDonald’s

for helping to encourage her and challenge her to always

do her best. Streeter issued a challenge to Byron-Bergen’s

underclassmen.

“Work harder and strive to do your best,” she said.

Ami Meier, Hilton

Ami Meier works to make a splash both inside and out

of the pool. A four-year sectionals backstroker, Meier is

looking forward to what the fall will bring. Hilton’s Westside

News Award Winner will be attending Long Island

University to major in broadcasting.

“I aspire to be someone who writes things that people

are inspired to read and that, by the end, they are impacted,”

said Meier. Much of her creative fire has been

stoked by English teacher Robert Blake.

“He is one of the most intelligent people I have ever

met,” said Ami. “He created an atmosphere where you

didn’t have to feel dumb if your thought was outside the

box.”

Ami says she is hoping that her unusual thinking will

lead her to be the first in a large family to graduate from

college. Beyond that, Meier is open to the excitement

that the world presents.

“I want to be a part of something bigger than this. I

want to create something that I am proud of,” she said.

Memorial Award

This award is for a student who recognizes

that proper use of leisure time takes as much

careful and thoughtful planning and preparation

as does a career, and that effective use of

leisure time can provide individuals with the

opportunity to make a significant contribution

to their communities, their families and to

themselves. Throughout his life, Cameron

B. Estes, a former president of the BOCES

2 Board, was a man who skillfully balanced

a family, a career and a need for creative use

of leisure time. Following his death in 1982,

members of Mr. Estes’ family, many of his

friends, as well as many associated with

BOCES 2, helped establish a fund in his

memory aimed at recognizing the benefits of

wise and creative use of leisure time.

The Victor AND JANET Salitan

Scholarship AWARD

Victor Salitan served for thirty years as a

school district attorney for several school

districts and specifically for Monroe 2-Orleans

BOCES for approximately sixteen

years. Mr. Salitan was the driving force

behind acquiring the BOCES facilities. He

was one of the founders of Monroe-Orleans

Veritas Development Corporation, one of the

first not-for-profit education corporations in

the State of New York. The purpose of this

corporation was to purchase the BOCES 2

buildings from the LeChase Corporation,

from whom the buildings were previously

leased. Mr. Salitan’s foresight and expertise

certainly assisted in the growth and development

of BOCES 2.

In 1980, the Victor Salitan Fund was established

as the Rochester Area Foundation. This

gift is held by the Foundation as an endowment

designated to benefit BOCES 2. This

generous designation is yet another example

of Mr. Salitan’s vested interest in programs

serving youth and affords students in BOCES

programs additional opportunities.

The John D. Klock

Scholarship

John D. Klock served the school districts

of Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES as a Board of

Education member for 28 years, beginning

with the Hilton Board of Education in 1962.

He served on the Hilton board for 14 years,

10 of those as president of the board. In 1975,

Mr. Klock was elected to the BOCES 2 Board

of Education. He served on the BOCES board

until 1990, as vice president for four years

and president for one year. Mr. Klock was

also president of the Monroe County School

Boards Association from 1977 to 1978, and

Area 2 Director of the New York State School

Boards Association from 1980 to 1982. Mr.

Klock’s years of service is a testament to his

abiding interest in education and in the young

people and adults in this area. His legacy to

education continues today with his generous

gift of a scholarship fund to benefit students

pursuing vocational/technical education.

Memorial Award

This award is given to an outstanding student

in the welding program. Craig Stockton

graduated from Churchville-Chili High

School in June of 1982. While a student at

Churchville-Chili, Craig also attended the

WEMOCO Vocational/Technical Center

where he took Welding Technology. Following

his graduation, Craig entered the Marine

Corps in September of 1982. While stationed

in Beirut, Lebanon, Craig was killed

in the bombing of Marine Headquarters on

October 23, 1983. Many friends took part

in fund-raising events to create a memorial

fund in Craig’s honor.

MEMORIAL AWARD

John B. Barry, known to many friends as

“Smoke,” was an honored Chrysler Motors

dealer with over twenty-five years of

service. Barry Dodge is the oldest Dodge

dealership in Monroe County. Mr. Barry

was also a life-member and past President

of the Kiwanis Club of Brockport and the

Kiwanis Club International. In 1967, Mr.

Barry was instrumental in developing the

automotive program at the WEMOCO

Career and Technical Center. He served

with distinction on the very first Advisory

Committee. The Kiwanis Club of Brockport

has created a memorial fund in Mr. Barry’s

honor. The monies from this fund have

been given to an outstanding student in the

automotive program.

Scholarships in 2002 to support students

WEMOCO Students Inducted Into National Technical Honor Society

Sixteen students were inducted into the WEMOCO Chapter of the National

Technical Honor Society (NTHS).

Current NTHS members Frank Carroll, Kristy Gustke, Kacie DeWaal,

and Kristin Wood led the candle lighting ceremony. WEMOCO teachers

presented the new inductees into the WEMOCO Chapter of the National

Technical Honor Society before an audience of their teachers, family,

and friends.

To be a member of the NTHS students must have a 90 average, an excellent

attendance record and adhere to the tenets of the NTHS of service,

character, and leadership.

Tyiana Small received the Stephanie Austin Memorial Award from PE teacher Michael

Bray for always doing her best. “Tyiana receives this award for her ability to get along with

others and for respecting others opinions,” said Physical Education Teacher Michael Bray.

Tyiana completed the Certified Nursing Assistant program at WEMOCO, and she plans to

attend MCC in the fall to study nursing. The award is named in honor of Stephanie Austin,

an outstanding physical education student at BOCES 2 TDP, who passed away three years

ago following graduating.

$100 by the Holley Garden Club to the graduating senior who

maintained the highest average in science for four years.

$75 by Mr. and Mrs. David Brooks to the senior boy who

participated in basketball or baseball, and who exemplifies the

County youth. The Child Welfare Association of Orleans

Each year, the Rochester District of the New

York State Credit Union League holds a

scholarship competition for high school seniors

who are members of participating credit

unions. The top finishers in that competition
