1. CanUSACLEN<br />
1.1 Intra CLEN projects<br />
1.1.1. Led by CEU Director Dr. Mohammad Rahbar, a team <strong>of</strong> CEU faculty at<br />
the University <strong>of</strong> Texas Health Science Center – Houston and<br />
investigators at the UWI, Mona campus as part <strong>of</strong> the NIH funded study<br />
<strong>of</strong> Autism Spectrum Disorders (June 3, 2009-May 31, 2011). This study is<br />
the first epidemiological study <strong>of</strong> Autism Spectrum Disorders in an Afro-<br />
Caribbean population. <strong>The</strong> data collection is underway as is the<br />
epidemiologic, genetics, and biostatistics capacity building at the UWI.<br />
1.1.2. <strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Ottawa is conducting knowledge synthesis <strong>of</strong> malaria<br />
prevention and cost-equity <strong>of</strong> malaria prevention strategies, funded by<br />
CIHR (2008-2010).<br />
1.1.3. <strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Ottawa is developing evidence-based clinical preventive<br />
guidelines for refugees and immigrant health in Canada, led by Kevin<br />
Pottie and Peter Tugwell.<br />
1.1.4. <strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Ottawa is involved in the update <strong>of</strong> the American<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Rheumatology clinical practice guidelines for osteoarthritis <strong>of</strong><br />
the hand and knee.<br />
1.2. Inter CLEN projects<br />
1.2.1. Leadership and Management Program (LAMP) - Vic Neufeld<br />
Ongoing LAMP is based on online modules that answer to needs <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>INCLEN</strong> units and faculty. Supplemented by face to face and online<br />
mentoring.<br />
1.2.2. Epistemonikos<br />
<strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Ottawa is collaborating with Gabriel Rada at the<br />
Pontificia Universidad Catolica, Santiago, Chile on developing an online<br />
social network <strong>of</strong> users who contribute value to a linked database <strong>of</strong><br />
user-friendly summaries, clinical practice guidelines, systematic reviews<br />
and primary studies.<br />
1.2.3. Training <strong>of</strong> systematic review techniques<br />
Led by Tracey Pérez, Koehlmoos <strong>of</strong> ICDDR,B in Bangladesh, the<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Ottawa is collaborating with colleagues from Bangladesh,<br />
Norway, the UK, the US, and Canada on a capacity building program.<br />
<strong>The</strong> program aims to provide training on systematic review techniques<br />
and is focused in South East Asia, with plans for training in Nepal,<br />
India, and Bangladesh.<br />
1.2.4. Patient safety – Argentina<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Ottawa is working with a Latin CLEN team in Argentina<br />
to adapt and implement an effective consumer scale developed in<br />
Canada. Tamara Rader (University <strong>of</strong> Ottawa) is coordinating with<br />
Agustin Ciapponi (Buenos Aires).<br />
1.2.5. Establishing a Hub for Mental Health <strong>Research</strong> in South Asia<br />

Led by CEU Director Dr. Mohammad Rahbar, at the University <strong>of</strong><br />
Texas Health Science Center – Houston, collaborative teams <strong>of</strong><br />
experienced multidisciplinary investigators in five South Asian countries<br />
(India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal) collaborated in<br />
responding to an Request for Proposal (RFA) released by the National<br />
Institute <strong>of</strong> Mental Health (NIMH) to establish a <strong>Regional</strong> Hub for<br />
Mental Health <strong>Research</strong> and Training in South Asia. This regional<br />
program will develop infrastructure for and strengthen the research<br />
capacity <strong>of</strong> the partnered institutions for training regional experts to<br />
conduct evidenced-based research on Mental Health and disorders<br />
relevant to their needs and culture. In addition this project will assess the<br />
impact, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability <strong>of</strong> a task-shifting<br />
intervention for reducing anxiety and depression by conducting<br />
innovative cluster randomized intervention trials in seven participating<br />
regions <strong>of</strong> five countries in South Asia. India CLEN is a major partner<br />
in this project and will coordinate the research and capacity building as<br />
well as research training activities in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. <strong>The</strong><br />
overall goal on this U19 application is to decrease the mental health<br />
treatment gap in South Asia.<br />

2.1.2. Lyon HDV (Handicap Dependence and Vulnerability) CEU<br />
2.1.2.1 3 d year <strong>of</strong> a national 176.000€ PHRC (Hospital Clinical <strong>Research</strong><br />
Project), with a 30.000€ grant from Fondation Motrice and a<br />
7.500€ grant from ALLP (Posthospital Logistics Lyon<br />
Association) for a “Longitudinal study <strong>of</strong> a population <strong>of</strong> children<br />
suffering from bilateral brain paralysis: effect and evolution <strong>of</strong><br />
orthopedic complications and pain due to these complications.<br />

2.1.2.2 In 2010, financing from ALLP (7500€) for the study<br />
« understanding the mechanism <strong>of</strong> hip excentration in non walking<br />
brain paralyzed children. » (Main searcher: Isabelle Poirot-<br />
Hodgkinson).<br />
2.1.2.3 ESOPAD (Study on Oral Health <strong>of</strong> Dependent Elderly) is starting<br />
a third phase in screening and cares. Health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals have<br />
been trained and the Oral Health Correspondents network<br />
supervises the establishments.<br />
2.1.2.4 <strong>The</strong> Autism & Oral Health project team is working in order to put<br />
at people‟s disposal communication tools and mediation tools<br />
before the end <strong>of</strong> 2010 using SOHDEV website, and also practical<br />
and assessment rules from the specific program <strong>of</strong> autistic children<br />
care.<br />

Sapna is a project funded by GAVI through the PneumoADIP at John<br />
Hopkins School <strong>of</strong> Public Health . This is an expansion <strong>of</strong> IndiaCLEN‟s<br />
IBIS studies in 6 centres in India and other South Asian countries such as<br />
Nepal and Sri Lanka.<br />
<strong>The</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> the project is to generate local data which will help policy<br />
makers <strong>of</strong> the participating countries in the use <strong>of</strong> pneumococcal conjugate<br />
vaccines .<strong>The</strong> programme operates in eight referral hospitals in India,<br />
Nepal and Sri lanka and has studied over 10,000 children since 2005.<br />
<strong>The</strong> IBIS/Sapna sites in India are:<br />

(ii) King George Medical College, Lucknow.<br />
(iii) Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College Mumbai.<br />

1.1.2. Mid Term Review Of NACP-III<br />
<strong>The</strong> Government <strong>of</strong> India (GOI) launched the third phase <strong>of</strong> the National<br />
AIDS control programme (NACP III) in July 2007<br />
1.1.3. Quality Assurance <strong>of</strong> HIV TEST KITS at NICD New Delhi in<br />
collaboration with NACO.<br />
National Aids Control Organization (NACO) is expanding HIV test kits to<br />
district and sub-district levels during NACP III. <strong>The</strong> project which started<br />
on 1 st January 2008, was initially to end on 31 st December 2009. An<br />
extension was given to the project from 1 st January 2010 to September<br />
2010. However in view <strong>of</strong> the on-going nature <strong>of</strong> the project, a no-cost<br />
extension has been given up to 29 th May 2011.<br />
1.1.4. Hospital Based Sentinel Surveillance for Hib Meningitis In Children<br />
(Hib)<br />
<strong>The</strong> project is being conducted at the Institute <strong>of</strong> Child Health Chennai.<br />
<strong>The</strong> surveillance for meningitis is scheduled to continue till end 2010.<br />

India.<br />
<strong>The</strong> project‟s goal is to provide the information and guidelines for<br />
developing comprehensive behavior change, communication and<br />
management strategy to shape demand and practices to improve<br />
reproductive, maternal ,neonatal and child health and nutrition<br />
(RMNCHN)outcomes in Uttar Pradesh and other Northern states . <strong>The</strong><br />
project funded by the Population Council was to run upto March 2010.<br />
1.2.2. Indiaclen Multicentre Trial Of Home Versus Hospital Oral<br />
Amoxicillin For Management Of Severe Pneumonia In Children<br />
(Ispot)<br />
This trial is proposed to evaluate the efficacy <strong>of</strong> a seven day course <strong>of</strong> oral<br />
amoxicillin given to children aged between 3years to 5 years for the<br />
management <strong>of</strong> pneumonia with lower chest in-drawing (severe<br />
pneumonia) conducted at five sites in India. This study would have major<br />
policy implications on the management <strong>of</strong> pneumonia in children.<br />
<strong>The</strong> project was to run from September 2007 to May 2010. <strong>The</strong> operation<br />
<strong>of</strong> the project has now been extended up to mid 2011. <strong>The</strong> trial is being<br />
conducted at Nagpur, Chandigarh, Aligarh, Sewagram, and more recently<br />
at Chennai.<br />
