Research Activities of Regional CLENS Centers 

1. CanUSACLEN 

1.1 Intra CLEN projects 

1.1.1. Led by CEU Director Dr. Mohammad Rahbar, a team of CEU faculty at 

the University of Texas Health Science Center – Houston and 

investigators at the UWI, Mona campus as part of the NIH funded study 

of Autism Spectrum Disorders (June 3, 2009-May 31, 2011). This study is 

the first epidemiological study of Autism Spectrum Disorders in an Afro- 

Caribbean population. The data collection is underway as is the 

epidemiologic, genetics, and biostatistics capacity building at the UWI. 

1.1.2. The University of Ottawa is conducting knowledge synthesis of malaria 

prevention and cost-equity of malaria prevention strategies, funded by 

CIHR (2008-2010). 

1.1.3. The University of Ottawa is developing evidence-based clinical preventive 

guidelines for refugees and immigrant health in Canada, led by Kevin 

Pottie and Peter Tugwell. 

1.1.4. The University of Ottawa is involved in the update of the American 

College of Rheumatology clinical practice guidelines for osteoarthritis of 

the hand and knee. 

1.2. Inter CLEN projects 

1.2.1. Leadership and Management Program (LAMP) - Vic Neufeld 

Ongoing LAMP is based on online modules that answer to needs of 

INCLEN units and faculty. Supplemented by face to face and online 

mentoring. 

1.2.2. Epistemonikos 

The University of Ottawa is collaborating with Gabriel Rada at the 

Pontificia Universidad Catolica, Santiago, Chile on developing an online 

social network of users who contribute value to a linked database of 

user-friendly summaries, clinical practice guidelines, systematic reviews 

and primary studies. 

1.2.3. Training of systematic review techniques 

Led by Tracey Pérez, Koehlmoos of ICDDR,B in Bangladesh, the 

University of Ottawa is collaborating with colleagues from Bangladesh, 

Norway, the UK, the US, and Canada on a capacity building program. 

The program aims to provide training on systematic review techniques 

and is focused in South East Asia, with plans for training in Nepal, 

India, and Bangladesh. 

1.2.4. Patient safety – Argentina 

University of Ottawa is working with a Latin CLEN team in Argentina 

to adapt and implement an effective consumer scale developed in 

Canada. Tamara Rader (University of Ottawa) is coordinating with 

Agustin Ciapponi (Buenos Aires). 

1.2.5. Establishing a Hub for Mental Health Research in South Asia

Led by CEU Director Dr. Mohammad Rahbar, at the University of 

Texas Health Science Center – Houston, collaborative teams of 

experienced multidisciplinary investigators in five South Asian countries 

(India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal) collaborated in 

responding to an Request for Proposal (RFA) released by the National 

Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to establish a Regional Hub for 

Mental Health Research and Training in South Asia. This regional 

program will develop infrastructure for and strengthen the research 

capacity of the partnered institutions for training regional experts to 

conduct evidenced-based research on Mental Health and disorders 

relevant to their needs and culture. In addition this project will assess the 

impact, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability of a task-shifting 

intervention for reducing anxiety and depression by conducting 

innovative cluster randomized intervention trials in seven participating 

regions of five countries in South Asia. India CLEN is a major partner 

in this project and will coordinate the research and capacity building as 

well as research training activities in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The 

overall goal on this U19 application is to decrease the mental health 

treatment gap in South Asia. 

2. EuroMedCLEN 

2.1. IntraCLEN projects: 

2.1.1. Bucharest CEU 

2.1.1.1.4 research projects (130.000 Euros for 2010), 6 publications in 

English for 2010. 

2.1.2. Lyon HDV (Handicap Dependence and Vulnerability) CEU 

2.1.2.1 3 d year of a national 176.000€ PHRC (Hospital Clinical Research 

Project), with a 30.000€ grant from Fondation Motrice and a 

7.500€ grant from ALLP (Posthospital Logistics Lyon 

Association) for a “Longitudinal study of a population of children 

suffering from bilateral brain paralysis: effect and evolution of 

orthopedic complications and pain due to these complications. 

Research of functional and general factors’ impact.” (Main 

researcher: Isabelle Poirot-Hodgkinson). 

2.1.2.2 In 2010, financing from ALLP (7500€) for the study 

« understanding the mechanism of hip excentration in non walking 

brain paralyzed children. » (Main searcher: Isabelle Poirot- 

Hodgkinson). 

2.1.2.3 ESOPAD (Study on Oral Health of Dependent Elderly) is starting 

a third phase in screening and cares. Health professionals have 

been trained and the Oral Health Correspondents network 

supervises the establishments. 

2.1.2.4 The Autism & Oral Health project team is working in order to put 

at people‟s disposal communication tools and mediation tools 

before the end of 2010 using SOHDEV website, and also practical 

and assessment rules from the specific program of autistic children 

care.

4. IndiaCLEN 

4.1. Ongoing research projects: 

4.1.1. South Asian Pneumococcal Alliance and HIB Initiative (SAPNA) 

Sapna is a project funded by GAVI through the PneumoADIP at John 

Hopkins School of Public Health . This is an expansion of IndiaCLEN‟s 

IBIS studies in 6 centres in India and other South Asian countries such as 

Nepal and Sri Lanka. 

The goal of the project is to generate local data which will help policy 

makers of the participating countries in the use of pneumococcal conjugate 

vaccines .The programme operates in eight referral hospitals in India, 

Nepal and Sri lanka and has studied over 10,000 children since 2005. 

The IBIS/Sapna sites in India are: 

(i) AIIMS New Delhi. 

(ii) King George Medical College, Lucknow. 

(iii) Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College Mumbai. 

(iv) Government Medical College Nagpur. 

(v) Trivandrum Medical College,Trivandrum. 

(vi) Christian Medical College Vellore, Tamil Nadu. 

(vii) Currently the project is in Phase III and is being conducted at the 

CMC Vellore. 

1.1.2. Mid Term Review Of NACP-III 

The Government of India (GOI) launched the third phase of the National 

AIDS control programme (NACP III) in July 2007 

1.1.3. Quality Assurance of HIV TEST KITS at NICD New Delhi in 

collaboration with NACO. 

National Aids Control Organization (NACO) is expanding HIV test kits to 

district and sub-district levels during NACP III. The project which started 

on 1 st January 2008, was initially to end on 31 st December 2009. An 

extension was given to the project from 1 st January 2010 to September 

2010. However in view of the on-going nature of the project, a no-cost 

extension has been given up to 29 th May 2011. 

1.1.4. Hospital Based Sentinel Surveillance for Hib Meningitis In Children 

(Hib) 

The project is being conducted at the Institute of Child Health Chennai. 

The surveillance for meningitis is scheduled to continue till end 2010.

However an extension has since been obtained for the project till June 

2011. The project is funded by USAID. 

1.2. Completed Project 

4.2.1. Shaping Demand And Practices To Improve Reproductive, Maternal, 

Newborn And Child Health And Nutrition Outcomes In Northern 

India. 

The project‟s goal is to provide the information and guidelines for 

developing comprehensive behavior change, communication and 

management strategy to shape demand and practices to improve 

reproductive, maternal ,neonatal and child health and nutrition 

(RMNCHN)outcomes in Uttar Pradesh and other Northern states . The 

project funded by the Population Council was to run upto March 2010. 

1.2.2. Indiaclen Multicentre Trial Of Home Versus Hospital Oral 

Amoxicillin For Management Of Severe Pneumonia In Children 

(Ispot) 

This trial is proposed to evaluate the efficacy of a seven day course of oral 

amoxicillin given to children aged between 3years to 5 years for the 

management of pneumonia with lower chest in-drawing (severe 

pneumonia) conducted at five sites in India. This study would have major 

policy implications on the management of pneumonia in children. 

The project was to run from September 2007 to May 2010. The operation 

of the project has now been extended up to mid 2011. The trial is being 

conducted at Nagpur, Chandigarh, Aligarh, Sewagram, and more recently 

at Chennai.

5.2.1. Erasmus-Fudan-China CLEN Joint Study 

This is an ongoing prospective cohort study, the same design of the 

Rotterdam Study. 15 000 Shanghai residents age >40 was included. The 

main objective of the Study is to investigate the prevalence and incidence 

of and risk factors for human severe diseases (diabetes, vascular heart 

diseases, hepatitis and Alzheimer's disease etc. in the elderly. In the year 

2010, baseline survey was completed in 30% of the total participants. And 

7 students got their Master Degrees. 

5.2.2. Norway-Sino on Chinese Traditional Medicine 

This is an international cohort study on colorectal cancer;
