Coffee break
For the ultimate caffeine fix, there’s nowehere quite like Second Cup.
BinHendi takes a sip of the latest winter flavours
There can be few flavours as
autumnal as the pumpkin. The
bulbous orange fruit creeps out
of the vegetative ether around mid
October, having been ignored all spring
and summer, to be suddenly ubiquitous,
its demonic visage beaming from
Halloween displays, and innards
suddenly appearing in soups and pies. It
may be a seasonal fruit, but its place at
the heart of so many exported North
American traditions sees its lumpish
leathery skin appear from Nova Scotia
to New Caledonia.
And one of its most internationally
adored incarnations sees it added to
that great Arabic traditional fare; coffee.
The pumpkin spice latte is a treat
whose joys are hard for non-users to
imagine, and one that comes, at last, to
our shores, thanks to Second Cup.
Dedicated drinkers of this delectable drop
tend to fall first for the warming pumpkin
flavour – slightly sweet, slightly savoury,
and desperately moreish. Rounded out
with autumnal flavours like nutmeg and
cinnamon, it’ll have you figuratively swept
away to a log cabin with an open fire
somewhere in New England. All mixed up
with steamed milk and rich espresso, it’s a
treat that coffee lovers should not deny
themselves.
But there are some tastes that both
define and defy the seasons. A rich, dark
chocolate is an indulgence most enjoyed
in the cooler months, be it in the post Eid
celebrations, end of year festivities or any
other holiday occasion. But the intensity
of that cocoa hit can be as spiritually
warming in the depths of winter as the
peaks of August. As a result, Second Cup
has introduced a delightfully decadent
new flavour – the new dark chocolate
latte. It’s a flavour so rich and tasty that
you’ll be drinking it all year round.
