Regional Park Steering Group<br />

Remit<br />

• to rapidly agree a plan of action, based on the content of the agreed Vision<br />

Statement<br />

• to ensure that this plan can deliver benefits within the three year lifespan of<br />

the interim governance structure<br />

• to ensure, through the actions of member organisations, that this is<br />

implemented<br />

Accountability<br />

The Steering Group is accountable to the Charnwood Forest Regional Park<br />

Stakeholder Group and the general public.


Regional Park vision and objectives<br />

Vision<br />

The unique natural and cultural heritage features of Charnwood Forest will<br />

be managed and promoted through the Charnwood Forest Regional Park.<br />

The Regional Park will be recognised as an essential part of the growing<br />

communities in the Derby, Leicester and Nottingham area, now and in the<br />

future.<br />

Objectives<br />

• To manage and promote landscape and settlement character, including<br />

biodiversity, geodiversity and cultural and industrial heritage features<br />

• To promote sustainable leisure and tourism<br />

• To support agricultural diversification and woodland and rural economy<br />

uses which respect local character


Steering Group activity - 2012<br />

Meeting 1 (February 2012)<br />

• Agreed terms of reference<br />

• Considered outstanding issues arising from stakeholder consultation on<br />

Topic Paper 3 (Governance)<br />

• Considered future work priorities and gave its support to the preparation of<br />

a Landscape Partnership bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund<br />

Meeting 2 (October 2012)<br />

• Considered the possibility of Geo<strong>park</strong> status for Charnwood Forest<br />

• Authorised the establishment of a Landscape Partnership Board to take<br />

forward the HLF bid<br />

• Received updates on Sustainable Urban Extensions (SUEs) from<br />

Charnwood BC and NW <strong>Leicestershire</strong> DC<br />

• Requested that a specialist report be brought to the meeting on how the<br />

Group can progress the issue of tourism


Steering Group activity - 2013<br />

Meeting 3 (January 2013)<br />

• Received a report on tourism from Martin Peters, CEO <strong>Leicestershire</strong><br />

promotions<br />

• Authorised the Landscape Partnership Board to develop the detailed<br />

content of the HLF bid<br />

• Received a report on other possible Regional Park projects including<br />

branding and marketing, traffic management and charcoal marketing<br />

Meeting 4 (May 2013)<br />

• Authorised the submission of the HLF bid<br />

• Considered a report on branding and noted the need to build the brand<br />

through use of the Charnwood Forest Regional Park name<br />

• Received a report on a possible Charnwood Forest Regional Park map


Steering Group activity – 2013 continued<br />

Meeting 5 (November 2013)<br />

• Received a report from the British Mountaineering Council on the potential<br />

for climbing in quarries<br />

• Received an update on tourism related activity<br />

• Approved the production of a dedicated OS based map for Charnwood<br />

Forest
