Manager’s Report
It’s hard to believe that summer begins in just a couple of
weeks! Energy levels are high throughout the Moraga Country
Club family as we look ahead to some fun and exciting
events that are coming up soon.
During the last few weeks we held a very successful
Ladies Invitational, and the Men’s Challenge will begin June
2nd. Junior programs for golf, swimming and tennis are filling
up fast. The swim team has 220 swimmers who have been
practicing regularly in the past weeks. The tennis courts are
active and golf play is increasing. Camp Moraga has become
more and more of a gathering place with new specials offered
every week.
The July 4th fireworks presentation will take place on the
driving range as usual.
I would like to thank the membership for continuing to
participate and support the Club and use the facilities during
these months that we wait for the completion of the new
clubhouse. We all know the inconveniences are temporary,
and that we will be very proud of the results in just a few
more months.
President’s Message
In mid-May the Board of Directors held a day-long retreat
in Lafayette. A primary objective of our annual retreat is to
focus on issues that we may be faced with in the future, rather
than to get wrapped up in dealing with day-to-day issues.
My President’s Report at the retreat contained several issues
that we may need to act on in the coming months and years.
My report included the following issues (in no particular order):
• Upgraded Tennis Lounge: should it include a Fitness Center?
• Child-Oriented Facilities: as our demographics change do
we need to think about space for our younger members to
hang out?
• Tertiary Water Supply: how can we reduce our dependence
on EBMUD for irrigating the golf course?
• Bocce Ball Courts: bocce is booming--is there sufficient
member interest in having our own bocce ball courts?
• Land Acquisition (“Back Ten”): what priority should we
give to this subject?
• Land Acquisition (Administration): should we relocate
some administrative functions off-campus?
• Other—what options do we have for increasing automobile
parking in the club?
Also, on the retreat agenda were the following subjects:
• Vision & Mission—does the opening of our new clubhouse
warrant changing MCC’s Vision and Mission?
• <strong>New</strong> <strong>Clubhouse</strong> Roll-Out—what needs to done before the
doors open and what rules should be put in place that
govern our behavior once the doors are open?
• Membership Structure/Effective Governance—given our
changing demographics, is it necessary to change the way
we do things (e.g. more committees, less committees, new
committees)?
• Branding—does a new clubhouse warrant a new logo
(which is one of the first steps in a re- branding process)?
I will have more to say on these subjects in the coming months.
BBBB
Thanks for listening. Don Maddison
<strong>Clubhouse</strong> Update
This month and each month going forward I will provide
a brief recap of construction activity in the preceding month
and a forecast of activity ahead. Unfortunately, this news
letter is printed several days after this column is written so
some of the information will be dated, but this will give you
at least some sense of the progress.
With the bulk of the inclement weather behind us the
project is moving along very well. The overall project is
behind the original schedule by approximately 10 calendar
days due to the early rain delays making it difficult to
perform excavation, framing and site work. The current track
is progressing well with the bulk of the project framing nearing
completion. The first floor and second floors have been
completely framed out and the roof trusses are nearing
completion. First floor mechanical, electrical and plumbing
rough-in work is nearing completion and the second floor
layout and rough-in will soon begin. As the building framing
nears completion the contractors will begin installing all
exterior building flashings in preparation for the window
system installation. June will see the beginning of the
exterior plaster system and the roof tiles being installed.
As the building gets dried in more substantial interior
finishes will be installed.
Regarding the site work, utilities installation is nearing
completion. The remaining work includes final storm drain
installation and “bio swale” construction (part of site
drainage) along with site electric infrastructure installation.
Site grading of the pool area will be complete May 19.
The remaining site grading and paving will be performed
once the building envelope is close to wrap up.
Upcoming schedule milestones include:
• Roof framing and sheathing complete.
• Window flashing and window frame installation
beginning
• MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) rough-in
complete
• Roof tile installation
• Begin exterior envelope and finishes
That is it for this month. As always, please feel free to contact
me or any other member of the Committee if you have any
questions.
Employee of the Month:
“LANI” TEVITA MOA
Congratulations to June’s Employee of the Month, “Lani” Tevita
Moa!! Lani has worked for Moraga Country Club since 1978; Lani
started working for the Landscaping Department and after a few
years moved to the Golf Course Maintenance Department in 1982.
You can catch Lani on the golf course mowing the fairways and
roughs, changing cups, operating equipment and helping others
when needed!!
When Lani is not working, he enjoys spending time in Tracy with
his wife and 6 boys!! When asked what he likes for entertainment he
tells us he is a Niners’ fan and enjoys watching action movies! When
he’s not rooting for his favorite team or watching a good movie, he’s
teaching and playing sports with his kids such as volleyball and tennis.
Next time you’re playing a round of golf, wave hello to June’s
Employee of the Month, “Lani” Tevita Moa!!! Good Job, Lani!
Ladies <strong>New</strong>s
The Ladies are busy planning the Ladies
Speaking of luncheons, on Friday, May 13th, Jennifer Oyoung and Helena Singlestad put together another
fun filled Tennis and Luncheon gathering with 35 gals wearing western attire. It was great fun with everyone
wonderful. Door prizes were an extra added bonus for Pam Bishop and Nilla Rittenhouse who were the lucky
winners. Many Thanks to Helena and Jennifer for another great gathering!
For all the Saturday morning Men who plan for the drop-in, just a reminder that the time has returned to
Our home away from home, the MAC, has been a great substitute during our club’s time of transition.
If you haven’t had a chance to visit us, please take some time to come by. Red tailed hawks, lots of deer
and even the occasional owl can be seen all day. Please just remember to sign in when you visit. Water
Aerobics will continue to use the satellite pools, but will return to the MAC when kids are out for the
Summer.
Once again, June will be an active, enjoyable time for the MCC Waves! Swim team practices will
Monday-Thursday schedule. The MicroWaves are one-on-one, 15 minute lessons scheduled within the hour listed above.
We’ll kick off the swim season with Time Trials on Sunday, June 5th. This will be our only Home Meet
this year, so let’s enjoy it and get in some fast opening swims!
In addition to great swimming instruction and competition, we have a number of fabulous swim
team social events lined up at the MAC for the month of June. Our swimmers will get a chance to mingle
and make friends at our first-ever Buddy Night on Thursday, June 17th. This promises to be a very fun
and memorable evening. We’ll also have our Waves Movie Day on June 21st and our Annual Swim-a-thon
on June 27th. In addition to all that great activity, we will be serving up “Tidal Tuesday” Lunches (hot
dog, drink and chips) at the pool and are working on a Thursday lunch plan as well.
MGA <strong>New</strong>s
The 2011 MGA season is in full swing, with three big tournaments in the history books. On April 16, a
new green jacket was ordered and a new era was ushered in. Edwin Lee (a former Stanford Golf Team
member) shot a 67 to overtake the two time defending champion Dan Sanguinetti. Edwin will choose the
menu at the 2012 Masters dinner in our new clubhouse. Cale Dodd was the next leading golfer with a 74.
Other notables included Dean Okamura, Paul Beckwith and Willie Osterman shooting a nice round of 76.
If anyone is interested in getting a Master’s Invitation, they are based on consistent MGA event
participation and success, so play often or play well.
The following week we held the Four Man Team Championship. The Four-Man team is two best balls
of 4 net. The half fireman team of Rich Condon and Paul Tabacco paired with Paul Boero and Yank Eppinger
to claim their first Four-Man Championship with an amazing score of 117 net!!
Blustery conditions met Players in the Moraga Cup and MGA Sr. Club Championship on May 13 and
14. Larry Koch added to his MCC legendary status, prevailing in a playoff with Dean Okamura and Frank
Jordan. Larry grabbed not only the overall Moraga Cup low gross, but the MGA Sr. Club title, as well.
Many prizes were awarded, including: Low Net under the age of 50: Eric Baymiller (138), Low Net 50-59:
Frank Jordan (139), Bart Penfold and Builder Bob McLaughlin tied for 2nd with a net 141. Low Net 60-69
(also the lowest net in the entire field): Irwin Javinsky with a stellar score of 137, Low Net 70+: Aubrey
Copeland (157). Congratulations to Irwin Javinsky, Eric Baymiller, John Parodi, Larry Koch, Randy Colombo
and Frank Jordon on qualifying for the NCGA Net Amateur event in August.
The Whisky Challenge will be the next big event to enter. The Whisky Challenge is a Friday and
Saturday event on July 15 & 16, where two-man teams play five alternating shot matches.
You can find the 2011 MGA Tournament Schedule on the MCC website:
Golf <strong>New</strong>s
SMGA
The results of round 2 of the Seniors’ eclectic tournament are in and there are some surprises for the
two day totals. “Honey Buns” Oliver was actually able to keep his “Joe Namath focus” with the help of
his “new true love” who shall remain unnamed. His partner, Dave Hoppock, who may be the best 31
handicap in the club, also had a helping hand in their victory. Their final score was a net 51 and the bragging
rights are well earned. Congratulations! In second place with a net 52 was the team of Larry Koch and
“Corvette” Manzi. Think about it, this team had a total handicap of about 13 (as opposed to first place
with a total of about 56) which makes it very difficult to compete against the higher handicapped players
but they persevered and played out of their collective minds. Nice going number 2. In third place, also
with a 52 are Chicago's Irwin Javinsky and “The Dong”. Fourth place, with a 53, goes to L.T. and “Belltone”
Brown. In 5th place with a 53 also, was the dynamic duo of “Awesome” Ostman and “Larzoni”. The final
paid position went to “Mrs. Butterworth” and the “Limousine liberal” - Boero and Eppinger. The most
improved bettered their scores by 7 strokes from day one to day two and those were the teams of Harry
Fish and John Gentry, Mr. Recker and Mr. Raleigh, and the 2nd place team of Jim Manzi and “Mr. Greens
Committee Chairman” Koch.
On April 28th, in spite of bum directions, 30 plus seniors found their collective way to Los Gatos and
the friendly confines of La Riconada Country Club. We ate our way through an incredible spread for
lunch and many of us were then ready for our afternoon nap. But, golf called, and we played 18 holes on
this scenic venue that was enjoyed by all. After golf were cocktails and a fine dinner. Hopefully we will
have a lot of us sign up when we return the favor on the 23rd of June. Oh yeah! The golf results; in the
first flight the 3rd place team had Moragan Mike Murray with 86 points. 2nd place with 92 points went to
Moragans Jim Ellis and “sweet swingin” Gene Amato. Get this- first place with 112 points went to a team
that included our own Denis Iwata (who was quoted as saying if he knew the seniors were so much fun
he would have joined years ago), David Geary, and Bobby Zachariah. Bobby also won low net with a 62
and congratulations because he is not a regular winner. In the second flight with 93 points was Fred Boettler.
In 2nd place, also with 93 points were Rich Larsen and “Mr. President” Dennis Martel. In first place with
101 points were Doug Long and Paul Boero. As opposed to Mr. Zachariah, Mr. Boero’s name is regularly
in this column. Low gross went to Larry Koch and Jim Ellis who each carded a 76. The most creative
excuse for not driving was “I would drive but I do not know how to take the baby seats out of the car. I
am not that mechanical you know” (no names).
Bragging rights- On Saturday, April 23rd, the club held its annual NCGA 4-ball tournament. 4 players
sign up as a team and the 2 best scores per hole are used to get the 2-ball total for the 18 holes. “Da Bulls”
and others were heard to snicker at the “Old Foursome” of Rich Condon, Paul Tabacco, Yank Eppinger and
Paul Boero. Well the last laugh was on them as the old guys lapped the field with a three stroke victory and
a total of 117- that is 25 under par. It did not hurt that 11 handicap Condon, 13 handicap Tabacco, and 17
handicap Boero (has Boero’s name been mentioned somewhere else?) each shot a gross 78. Nice bringing
some credibility to the Seniors and their bumping! It just goes to show that course management is overrated.
Handicap management will win every time
On Thursday, May 5th, the first day of the two day Match Play Classic was held. There are four players
in each flight all of whom play each other for one nine hole match. After the final in-flight match on day
two, first place in flight one plays first place in flight two, second place in flight one plays second place in
flight two and so on. Day one saw some nail biting matches and the first matches on day two should be
some doozies! In virtually every flight the top two point leaders will face off in a death match, but we are
getting ahead of ourselves. On day one in flight 1 “Oski” Ellis accumulated 25 points and he will face off
against “We are SC” Jordan who has 23 points and shot a gross 70 (Ellis was a weak 72). Bill Reinsberg
will coast in the 2nd flight with 27 points and a 7 point lead over Mike Strickland. The 3rd flight will
match “Law Professor” Lathrope with 25 points against “Law Enforcement Officer” Dennis Martel with
22 points. Flight 4 will match “Hilarious Herb” Gindy with 27 points against “Trash Talking” Bryan Cram
with 25 points. Bryan shot a 78 while those on the driving range the next day were fortunate enough to
hear Herb recall all of his 77strokes one by one. Not bad golf for two 15 handicappers! The 5th flight will
match 24 point Harry Fish against Rich Larsen’s 24 and a smooth 81 for Mr. “Larzoni”. “Coach Campy”,
with a knee brace, another knee wrapped, and a wrist support, will face off against “Buffalo” Joe Roebuck
who holds a one point lead 22 to 21 in flight 6. Flight 7 is a “cake walk” for Winnie Jaspar’s own Jerry
Chamberlain who has 27 points and a 9 point lead over “Sarge” Gentry. Flight 8 has Lou Rittenhouse with
a 25 point total and Irwin J. at 22 points. Flight 9 has Chuck Healy with 28 points (score unknown because
not posted yet) and he promises to play L.T. with one eye closed because he has an 8 point lead. Flight 10
has “Lover Boy” Oliver facing off against Al Simonsen. Paul Boero’s name was not mentioned because he
did not enter this event. STAY TUNED.
MWGA <strong>New</strong>s
“Play the Pro Day” had Jason and Stephanie competing against the ladies of MWGA in a format that had the best ball between
Jason and Stephanie competing with the net score of our ladies on each hole. It was a lot of fun. Denise Acker was the “lone”
MWGA winner with a net 73, the only score better than our awesome pros who scored a gross best ball 74. Thanks Denise for
saving MWGA and to Jason and Stephanie for sharing their time with us. After golf, Jason gave a very informative rules
discussion over issues that happen on our course.
Neighborly Thoughts
School will be out soon and the weather is nice, more and more of our members are
out and about in the community, at the pools, on the tennis courts, and on the golf course.
Our office is starting to receive more and more calls concerning residents walking their
dogs in the community, around the pools, on the tennis courts, and on the golf course.
The concern being expressed is the appearance of folks not cleaning up after their dogs.
We all like these friendly critters and everyone would sure appreciate it if responsible pet
owners cleaned up after their dogs! No, I am not talking about our local deer population.
Another concern being expressed by folks in the hill areas concerns parking. We
would like to remind drivers who park on hills to curb your wheels. This would prevent
serious damage to your vehicle as well as homes in the event of an unfortunate run away
vehicle down a hill.
While on the subject of parking…did you know the Postal workers will not deliver
mail into a mailbox if a vehicle is parked next to it? Please share this information with all
drivers in your household. I know your neighbors will appreciate this effort on each of
the drivers in our community.
Rules and regulations require residents to close their garage doors when not out in front
of your house or working in the yard. Several reasons for this would be the appearance is
more esthetically pleasing and it does not invite unwanted individuals from entering an
opened garage and helping themselves to your personal property.
General Course Condition
While you are enjoying Moraga Country Club this summer, please keep an eye out for
our hand watering staff. The watering team will be working diligently to keep hot turf spot
losses to a minimum through the summer months. The crew will be using both hoses and
small misting sprinklers to help minimize our disruptions to the membership.
As we approach the summer season, the maintenance staff is on high alert for any signs
of disease outbreaks. To help minimize the disease outbreak this summer, we will be working
daily to minimize excess irrigation as well as applying preventive disease control applications
(fungicides). Turf disease pressure is usually at its greatest when temperatures and humidity
figure added together, surpass the 140 mark. For instance, when temperatures exceed 105
degrees and humidity exceeds 40% conditions are favorable for the development of disease
as combined they equal 145.
Raking Bunkers
Sand bunkers are enough of a hazard without the bad lies caused by an un-raked surface,
so here are some quick tips for making sure that the next golfer who faces your predicament
is not additionally cursed by an un-groomed bunker.
1. Try to enter and exit the bunker from the point that's closest to your ball, but must be
level to the adjacent playing surface. Do no try to climb out by going up a steep bunker face.
2. Always rake the bunker immediately after your sand shot
3. Be careful not to pull excess sand to or over the lip of the bunker. The best practice is to
alternate between pulling sand toward you and pushing it back with the tines of the
rake, thus making a relatively even surface without displacing too much sand.
