MAURO CORDA

MAURO CORDA
“Each element can move, shift or sway back & forth in a
changing relation to each of the other elements in the
universe. Thus, they reveal not only isolated moments,
but a physical law or variation among the elements of
life. Not extractions, but abstractions. Abstractions which
resemble no living things except by their manner of
reacting”. Alexander Calder.
The theme of the Calderian lightness can be seen in
Mauro Corda in various forms, ranging from subjects that
the artist chooses (fish, contortionists, dogs, etc.) to other
variations, which although could be seen as more classic,
assume extremely dynamic poses.
Here in Cordian sculpture the modern and classical are
melted together into an airy and fluctuating universe,
where everybody, equipped with a plasticity that elevates
itself to harmony, gently vibrates in the surrounding
space.
These marine beings silently swim in Utopian aquariums
or imaginary seas, suspended in an undefined limbo,
thanks to the ability of the artist to transform the tension
and the dense and real physicality of the matter into an
intangible airiness.
“When I think of my creations,” the sculptor says “I imagine
them to be weightless” and this magical impression is
also perceived by the spectator, who remains dazzled by
the figures which twist themselves into plastic poses, or
from the fish that assemble at “Le banc de poissons”, softly
suspended in the ether.
In the same way, in the Chinese zodiac selection, Corda
shows his interest in linear forms, classical in nature, which
bring to mind a sobriety typical of Zen contemplation.
The dynamic of the body masses, that levitate or are
dipped into nonexistent waters, is essential in the search
for a new and original expression, shown in the main
reproduction of anatomical details that introduce a
different reality, since it is metabolised from the careful
study of every single proposed subject.
Also the choice of the materials for Corda is fundamental,
because it allows his works to be infused with that
luminosity which is indispensible in heightening the
apparently precarious positions of the variety of acrobats
hanging by invisible threads; light that vibrates on the
aluminium and bronze surfaces of these marine beings.
Only the sensitivity of the Chairman of Opera Gallery
like Gilles Dyan, can perceive the ecstasy of art in Corda’s
sculptural forms. In fact Dyan says: “What strikes me with
the works of Corda is their undeniable harmony in the
same language, which moulds ancient pureness with the
seemingly intrinsic static nature of the forms. In reality
every single work implies a movement that is frozen at
the very moment of its creation.”
And so, it is with great pleasure that Opera Gallery
presents in Singapore, at the Marina Bay Sands Gallery, the
wonderful creations of Mauro Corda.
