slavilor a devenit mărul discordiei dintre Praga și un mic orășel din Cehia.
TUG OF WAR OVER CZECH ART NOUVEAU GEM
Once hidden from the Nazis under a heap of coal, an epic Art Nouveau work
created as a tribute to the Slavs has become the object of a tugofwar
between Prague and a small Czech town.
Celebrul artist Alfons (Alphonse) Mucha (1860–1939),
cunoscut mai ales pentru picturile sale stilizate,
reprezentând femei in diferite ipostaze, a dedicat 18 ani
din viaţa sa pentru a crea o serie de 20 de alegorii care ilustrează
istoria poporului slav.
La mai bine de 80 de ani după ce Mucha a dat ultimele retuşuri
„Epopeii Slave”, autorităţile din Praga nu au reuşit să
construiască galeria pe care şi-o dorea pictorul, demnă de a
adăposti capodopera sa. În schimb, opera a fost expusă timp de
50 de ani la un castel din Moravsky Krumlov, orăşel de
provincie din Moravia de Sud, aflat la 200 km sud-est de Praga.
Famed Czech artist Alfons (Alphonse) Mucha
(1860–1939), best known for his stylized paintings
of women, took 18 years to create the cycle of 20
allegories tracing the history of the Slavic people.
But more than 80 years after Mucha applied the last
brushstroke to “The Slav Epic”, Prague has failed to build
the gallery its author wanted as a “dignified” home for his
masterpiece. Instead, the work has spent a half-century
on display at a privately-owned chateau in Moravsky
Krumlov, a provincial town in South Moravia about 200
kilometres (124 miles) southeast of Prague.
