Cu puţin timp înaintea sa, hotelul a oferit adăpost şi lui Elyesa
Bazna, cunoscut mai ales după numele de cod Cicero, un agent în
solda Germaniei naziste, spune istoricul Jak Deleon în cartea sa,
„A taste of old Istanbul” („O fărâmă a vechiului Istanbul”). De
asemenea, este foarte posibil ca legendara dansatoare şi spioană
Mata Hari, înregistrată printre pasagerii trenului Orient Expres
în 1897, să fi stat şi ea la hotel o vreme, crede Deleon.
Povestea trenului, inaugurat în 1883, şi cea a hotelului se
împletesc strâns. Purtând călători de un nou soi – oameni de
afaceri interesaţi de influenţa din ce în ce mai mare a Vestului
asupra economiei otomane, artişti şi aventurieri bogaţi în căutarea
exotismului – Orient Expresul avea nevoie de un loc care să
satisfacă aşteptările pasagerilor săi. Lucrările de construcţie au
început în 1892 şi Palatul Pera şi-a deschis porţile în 1895,
devenind locul cel mai luxos al Istanbulului.
Hotelul a fost prima clădire, cu excepţia palatului imperial otoman,
care avea electricitate şi singurul care oferea apă caldă curentă
oaspeţilor săi. Liftul electric era de asemenea o premieră absolută
în Turcia la momentul respectiv. Dar după 111 ani de funcţionare,
clădirea avea nevoie de reparaţii majore. Hotelul a fost închis în
2006 pentru realizarea unui inventar, iar lucrările de renovare au
început în aprilie 2008. „Este prima lucrare de renovare atât de
amplă din întreaga istorie a Palatului Pera. Absolut totul, toate
cablurile şi ţevile, au fost schimbate”, explică managerul hotelului,
Pinar Kartal Timer. „Obiectivul nostru a fost să păstrăm aerul retro
al Palatului Pera, incluzând, în acelaşi timp, tehnologiile secolului
XXI”, adaugă ea. Renovarea costă 23 de milioane de euro (29,3
milioane de dolari). Dar la parter, un loc declarat monument istoric,
toate elementele originale au fost păstrate ca atare, fiind doar
restaurate cu meticulozitate de o echipă de experţi. „Ne-am dori
să reînviem tradiţiile”, spune Kartal Timer.

kind – businessmen attracted by the growing Western
hold on Ottoman economy, artists and wealthy
adventurers in search of the exotic – the Orient Express
needed a place to meet the expectations of its
passengers. Construction started in 1892 and the Pera
Palace opened its doors in 1895, becoming Istanbul's
most luxurious establishment.
It was the city's first building, barring the Ottoman
palace, to have electricity, and the only one to provide
hot running water to its guests. The hotel's electric
elevator was unprecedented in Turkey. But after 111
years of service, the building needed a serious
renovation. It was closed in 2006 for an inventory before
renovation work started in April 2008. "It is the first
renovation on such a scale in the history of the Pera
Palace. Anything you can think of – every pipe, every
cable – has been changed," hotel manager Pinar Kartal
Timer told AFP. "Our objective was to preserve the
nostalgia of Pera Palace while incorporating the
technology of the 21st century," she said. The
renovation cost 23 million euros (29.3 million dollars).
But on the ground floor, which is listed as a historical
monument, all original pieces were left untouched,
meticulously restored by a team of academic experts.
"We would like to revive the traditions," said Kartal Timer.
