Piscina și Atriumul hotelului adaptează caracteristicile decorului de la 1930 la contemporaneitate

şi în unele fragmente din romanul autobiografic al lui J.G.
Ballard, „Imperiul soarelui”, iar regizorul Steven Spielberg a
folosit hotelul şi în adaptarea cinematografică din 1987 a cărţii.
De-a lungul anilor, multe din trăsăturile originale ale Peace
Hotel, în vârstă de 81 de ani, au fost distruse sau acoperite, pe
măsură ce războaie, revoluţii şi lucrări de renovare prost gândite
şi-au lăsat amprenta asupra locului. Hotelul a fost în cele din
urmă închis pentru renovări majore în anul 2007.
NOUA VIAŢĂ A PEACE HOTEL
O echipă de la Hirsch Bedner Associates a lucrat cu istorici locali
pentru a restaura şi reconstrui trăsăturile art deco ale hotelului,
îndepărtând straturi de vopsea şi folosindu-se de fotografii vechi
şi planuri arhitecturale pentru a reda clădirii strălucirea iniţială.
În ultimii trei ani, hotelul cel mai luxos al Orientului Îndepărtat
a revenit la gloria sa din anii 1930.
În partea din spate a hotelului s-a adăugat o aripă nouă, ce a
permis extinderea numărului de camere la 270, adăugarea unei
piscine şi a mai multor lifturi şi zone de agrement. Iar elemente
care au rămas ascunse zeci de ani, precum tavanul de sticlă
octogonal şi nivelul de la mezanin, au fost restaurate. În ciuda
elementelor moderne adăugate, interiorul art deco şi
restaurantul Dragon Phoenix, care frizează kitsch-ul, îţi lasă
senzaţia că ai călătorit înapoi în timp, contrastând cu eforturile
Shanghaiului de a-şi etala chipul ultramodern.
În întregimea sa, hotelul aduce omagiu fondatorului său Victor
Sassoon, omul de afaceri care a transformat clădirea într-o scenă
of his autobiographical novel Empire of the Sun in the
hotel – so Steven Spielberg used it too for his 1987 film
version of the story.
Over time, many of the original features of the 81-year-old
Peace Hotel were destroyed or covered up as war,
revolution and ill-conceived renovations battered the
building, which finally closed in 2007 for a facelift.
THE NEW LIFE OF PEACE HOTEL
A team from Hirsch Bedner Associates worked with local
historians to restore and reconstruct the hotel's art deco
features, scraping away layers of paint and using old
photographs and architectural plans for reference. In the past
three years, the Far East's most luxurious hotel was restored
to its 1930s glory.
A new wing was also added to the back of the hotel to expand
it to 270 rooms, add a sky-lit swimming pool and provide
additional elevators and other amenities. And features such as
the octagonal glass skylight and the mezzanine level – which
had been covered up for decades – were redeveloped.
Despite the modern touches, the hotel's restored art deco
interior and the kitschy Dragon Phoenix restaurant create the
sensation of stepping back in time, contrasting with Shanghai's
many efforts to show an ultra-modern face.
Throughout, the hotel pays tribute to its founder Victor
Sassoon, the businessman who made the building the
scene of lavish parties and lived in its tower. His quarters
