Hotelul era odinioară chiar inima „Perlei Orientului”,
cum era cunoscut Shanghaiul în anii ’20 şi ’30, fiind
celebru pentru petrecerile fabuloase pe care le găzduia
şi pentru trupa de jazz care cânta non-stop. Încă de la inaugurarea
sa sub numele de Hotel Cathay, în anul 1929, pe faimosul Bund
din Shanghai, celebra stradă de pe malul Râului Huangpu,
hotelul a fost martor tăcut al tuturor schimbărilor majore prin
care a trecut metropola.
Printre alţi oaspeţi faimoşi ai Peace Hotel s-au numărat George
Bernard Shaw, liderul Partidului Naţionalist Chinez Chiang Kaishek
şi, în vremuri mai recente, celebrul boxer Muhammad Ali
şi fostul preşedinte al Statelor Unite Bill Clinton. Hotelul apare

of the Orient’’, as Shanghai was known in the 1920s
and 30s, and was famous for its fabulous parties
and for a jazz band that would play around the clock. It has
stood silent witness to the city’s many changes since it
opened first as the Cathay Hotel in 1929, positioned on
Shanghai’s famous Bund, famous street on the bank of the
Huangpu river.
Other famous guests of Peace Hotel have included George
Bernard Shaw, Chinese Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek
and, in more recent times, boxer Muhammad Ali and former
