şapte ani. Casa plină de copii (Alteţa Sa Regală are patru surori),
inocenţa vârstei şi farmecul peisajului fac aceste amintiri să ocupe
un loc aparte în memoria sa afectivă.
În fiecare seară de ajun, copiii împodobeau bradul şi îl aşteptau
cu nerăbdare pe Moş Crăciun, în vreme ce adulţii pregăteau
masa. Oricât se luptau cu somnul, copiii nu reuşeau să îl
surprindă pe Moş Crăciun care lăsa cadourile pe nesimţite. Abia
de dimineaţă ciorapii plini de cadouri care apăsau plapuma îi
trezeau, iar casa se umplea de chiote de bucurie. Nimic din
greutatea exilului nu atingea bucuria şi entuziasmul copilăriei.
Odată cu stabilirea în Elveţia, Crăciunul a început să se împartă
între noul “cămin” şi reşedinţa Reginei Mamă Elena, stabilită în
Italia. În vreme ce Crăciunul în Elveţia presupunea intimitate şi
informal, fiind petrecut strict în familie, cel din Italia a stat sub
semnul personalităţii Reginei Mamă şi a gustului său desăvârşit.
În casa ei din Florenţa, Vila Sparta, o locuinţă de la 1500 pictată
în nuanţe de ocru, obiceiul împodobirii pomului de Crăciun s-a
păstrat. S-a adăugat însă întâlnirea cu prietenii de suflet ai
Reginei, diplomaţi, artişti, intelectuali, oameni de ştiinţă, dar şi
oameni simpli. Iar peste toate, s-a adăugat binecuvântarea de a
participa la o slujbă de Crăciun într-o biserică ortodoxă.
CRĂCIUNUL FAMILIEI REGALE
LA TIMPUL PREZENT
Din perioada exilului, Familia Regală a păstrat o serie de
obiceiuri, cum ar fi cel al împodobirii Pomului de Crăciun,
întotdeuna alături de copii, pregătirea mâncărurilor
tradiţionale, slujba de la biserică. Doar că acum, fiecare
Crăciun se petrece la castelul de la Săvârşin. Familia se
reuneşte la palat cu câteva zile înainte de Crăciun, Majestăţile

the innocence of the age and the charming scenery make these
memories take an important role in her emotional memory.
Every Christmas eve, children would get the Christmas tree
ready and eagerly waited for Santa, while the adults would
prepare the meal. No matter how hard they fought falling asleep,
the children never succeeded in catching Santa Clause leaving
his gifts. It was only in the morning that the Christmas stockings
pressing heavily on their quilt woke them up and the house
would then be filled by cries of joy. There was nothing of the
hardship of exile that affected the joy and enthusiasm of
childhood. Once she settled in Switzerland, Christmas began
to be separated between the new ‘home’ and the residence of
Queen Mother Elena, in Italy. While Christmas in Switzerland was
intimate and informal, being spent only with the family, the one
in Italy was always under the sign of the Queen Mother’s
personality and exquisite taste. In her Florence home, Vila
Sparta, a house dating back to the 1500s, dyed in shades of
ochre, the tradition of adorning the Christmas tree was
maintained. But the new element was the gathering of the
Queen’s best friends – diplomats, artists, intellectuals, scientists,
but also common people. And above all, the blessing of
attending a Christmas service in an Orthodox church.
ROYAL FAMILY CHRISTMAS IN THE PRESENT
The Royal Family has kept several habits it got while in exile,
such as decorating the Christmas tree together with the children,
cooking the traditional dishes and attending a church service.
Only that now, every Christmas is celebrated at the Săvârșin
castle. Family members gather at the palace a few days before
