FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Swimming Carnival – congratulations to
Macquarie house upon their win at the
swimming carnival last week. Exceptional
swimmers will now make their way to the zone
swimming carnival next Friday (see later).
The following students have been recognized
for their contribution as helpers on the day:
Open Day – it was wonderful to see so many
interested members of the school community
who attended the school Open Day yesterday.
Once again our students excelled in their
ability to rise to the occasion with exceptional
performances from musicians, dancers and
public speakers. The SRC must be
commended for their contributions as school
tour leaders and general helpers, Lachlan
Peake, Amelia Loughland, Joseph Nizeti and
Ariane Blom are congratulated for their
contributions as speakers, Tallulah Bur
stunned the audience with her dancing, the
Wind Orchestra, the Jazz Orchestra and the
Vocal Ensemble showed the depth of our
excellent music program, Tim Anderson,
Michael Goodyear, Kathryn Murray were
excellent backstage crew and Rosie Jones
was wonderful as the MC for the day. Open
Day is an opportunity for us to showcase many
of our talented students and their programs.
A special thanks is extended to the P&C
parents, cocoordinated by Carmel Fielding,
who helped with the morning tea and
demonstrated the close link of school and
community.
Alumni – we are very pleased with the
responses we are getting to the reunion of all
old boys and girls of Manly on the afternoon of
Sunday April 6 th from 2:00 – 4:00pm. The best
way for any exstudents to register with the
alumni is through the P&C website
(manlypandc.org.au) so they can be added to
the database of contacts. Any questions and
offers of memorabilia or support for the day
can be referred to manly.alumni@gmail.com.
Any memorabilia from the old school days
would be gratefully received and looked after
to add to the richness of the school’s history.
The program of activities and displays is taking
shape with the theme being on celebrating the
diverse nature of the school and providing an
opportunity to renew friendships from many
years ago.
Snippets of history still come out about the
interesting history of the school. Most people
are familiar with the current Common Room
but I wonder how many people are aware that
it was once the school library catering for the
original boys’ school with bare wooden floors
and a librarian’s office in the current kitchen?
This is just one of many aspects of the school
that have been discovered in going through
some great archival material, especially old
photographs.
P&C New Parents Night – the P&C are
hosting a night for all new parents to the
school on the 13 th March at 7pm in the school
hall. Food and drinks will be supplied. This is a
great opportunity to meet established P&C
parents, to establish networks of contacts and
to share the experiences of our new 2008
students.
Jindabyne Camp – next week Year 11 will be
on camp in Jindabyne. This is a regular camp
that is very popular with students, teachers
and the camp staff. We look forward to hearing
of their experiences upon their return. Thanks
to the staff who have given up their personal
and family time to support this camp – Mr
Laurie Hutton, Mr Mark Rendell, Ms Yoko
Ichikawa, Ms Jacqui McNee and Ms Stacey
Birch.
Congratulations to:
Edward Becker (Year 11) and Grant
Lynch (Year 9) upon their selection for
the NSWCHSSA Tennis
Championships at St Mary’s next week.
This is a continuing recognition of the
skills of these boys.
Lauren Parnaby (Year 10) upon her
selection into the NSWCHSSA Girl’s
Softball team. Lauren has once again
been recognized for her skills in softball
competing in the carnival next week at
Blacktown.
Paul Darmanin (Year 8), Lisa Darmanin
(Year 11), James Lawira Fernandez
(Year 8) and Lauren Crossman (Year
12) upon their selection as part of the
CHS team for the Australian Schools
Sailing Championships to be held in
Newcastle in April. Good luck to all of
these exceptional sailors.
Georgia Andrews (Year 10), Natalie
Schultz (Year 9), Samantha Pilz (Year
11) and Helen Diacono (Year 10) upon
their representation of the MSC
equestrian team at the PLC Dressage
Day in April. Good luck to both girls in
this unique sport.
Eldon Smith (Year 8) upon her
David Tomlin
From the Deputy Principal Middle
School…
The upcoming Discos for Year 8 and Year 7
and their Peer Leaders on Wednesday, March
26, 6.30 pm– 9.30 pm and for Year 9 on
Thursday, March 27, 6.30pm – 9.30pm should
be great opportunities for students to further
the friendships they have already created. I
also know that our Techno people are planning
some extra surprises to make the nights bigger
and better than ever. Everyone is encouraged
to attend. Notices have already been
distributed to Year 7 students and the rest are
on their way (if they have not already been
received by the time this article is published).
Year Advisers will also welcome a good
response from parent helpers.
Year 7 students have undertaken their first
Maths Common test. I hope the Test
Preparation study skills module was carefully
applied by all students so that all receive
excellent results. Thanks to the Maths
teachers, Mr Barton, Dr Porter, Mrs Williams,
Mr Somerton and Mr Harris, for providing
explicit instruction in this study skill. This week
students have reviewed the module on their
Learning Environment. Thanks to Mr Reading,
Ms Franic, Mr Boyd and Ms Blasini.
Year 8 students have undertaken a Notetaking
study skills session this week, thanks to
Ms Taylor, Mr Clarke, Mr Hutton and Mrs
Hutton. The major emphases are on
expanding the shorthand students already use
through texting, MSN etc AND on increasing
student alertness to teacher cues, like “There
are 4 important points” or “This is going to be
in the next test” or “That was an excellent point
that … made”, as a hint (a very big hint!) that
notes should be being taken without the
teacher directing the student to do so. Note
taking is also an important strategy for
developing the Habit of Mind (in which student
were trained in Year 7) of Listening with
Empathy and Understanding.
Year 8 students have a Maths common test on
Monday, March 10, so they too should be
using the Test Preparation skills taught in Year
7 (summary writing, memorising, practising,
rechecking knowledge of rules, more practice
over several nights).
Tips for Parents…
If your child is struggling to develop fluency
and good sequencing in writing, try the
following to help incorporate:

Some of the language of
argument for Discussions,
Expositions.
Conjunctive adverbs show logical relationships
between two independent sentences, between
sections of paragraphs, or between entire
paragraphs.
Conjunctive adverbs
also
hence
however
still
likewise
otherwise
therefore
conversely
rather
consequently
furthermore
nevertheless
instead
moreover
then
thus
meanwhile
accordingly
Example:
· It could be said that the Olympic
Games provide the most prestigious
forum for recognition of sporting
achievement. However, many people
would disagree, arguing that the
Games are expensive, elitist and very
narrow in the range of athletic
endeavours included. Moreover, the
original concept of the Games as a
place for amateurs to compete has
been completely lost. Consequently,
poorer countries are effectively
excluded as are athletes in fields for
which the Games do not cater.
Accordingly, the Games should be
abandoned and a new sporting contest
created. Thus the twentyfirst century
could see a sporting event that is
egalitarian, free of performance
enhancing drugs and representative of
all sports.
TASK: Create a paragraph using at least 3
of the above Conjunctive Adverbs and the
words:
YEAR 7
CALCULATIONS
FOR
MATHEMATICS
All students in Year 7
should now be
purchasing a calculator and these will be sold
in class as from Week 6. The model
recommendation is the Casio fx82AU and
these are available at the School Office for
$27.50. This is a considerable reduction in
cost over commercial outlets.
As there are different models and brands, it is
not possible for all teachers to know all
nuances of calculators available on the
market. Hence support can only be
reasonably expected for this calculator (or a
predecessor, the 82MS).
We have good supplies but be quick.
CHESS
COMPETITION
Students interested in
representing Manly
Selective Campus in the
secondary schools chess competition attended
a meeting last week and received information
and permission notes. It would be appreciated
if those notes could be returned to me, in the
library, by Monday 3 rd March as I need to have
accurate numbers for team entries which are
due by the end of the week. On current
numbers we are likely to field three Junior
teams, two Intermediate teams, if one more
player joins, and two Senior teams.
The first round of competition will be played on
Friday, 9 th May, which is the second Friday of
second term.
Any student in Years 9 or 10 who is interested
in playing should see me as soon as possible
so I can finalise the Intermediate team entries.
Ratings tournaments will be organised by our
School Chess Captain, Jonathan Marwick,
Year 12, and will be advertised in the Daily
Notices. Players who already have chess
ratings will be graded accordingly.
Good luck to all who have entered and I hope
you enjoy the experience.
Bronwen Mitchell, School Chess Coordinator

CAREER MATTERS
GAP year programs are offered by Flying Fish
for students interested in sailing,
skiing/boarding, diving etc. An information
evening will be held on Wednesday 19 March
book in.
Reminder: The Business Cadetships
Information Session will be held on 28 March
at the Marriott Hotel, 30 Pitt Street, Sydney
from 7pm. These are fantastic as you earn
while you study and you get to choose the
course and Uni you want to attend. Well worth
the time invested to go along.
SPORT NOTICES
Championships will be held on 18 th March
2008 at the Sydney Aquatic Centre.
Next week the 12 th March the third rotation of
Between 9 – 25 January, I attended the
Australian Biology Olympiad training school at
the ANU. It is an annual residential school to
teach 1 st year university biology to the top 20
biology students in Australia, as determined by
a qualifying exam.
It was a very interesting and exciting
experience. We learnt intriguing and weird
things, from why bromeliads are drought
resistant to the extraordinary behaviour of
some lizards. The practicals were completely
different from school. For example we used
sophisticated and precise equipment to
measure chemical concentrations and
culturing bacteria to see whether an “infected
water sample was safe to drink”.
Permission notes need to be collected from Ms
Taylor and returned immediately. If you are
unable to attend the Zone Carnival please let
either Ms Taylor or Mr Buchan know.
The Sydney North Regional Swimming
Championships are to be a combined Primary
and Secondary event for this year. The
During the 16 days in Canberra, which isn’t the
most exciting place in Australia, I got to know
the students and tutors in the program very
well. They were an extraordinary group of
people, from all around Australia who had
diverse interests (apart from Science).
Leaving the school was a mixture of emotions
I knew I would miss the people I met there

and the experience itself, though I would not
miss the long hours or Canberra!
Thank you to the P & C who helped fund this
Olympiad through their Excellence Fund.
