Manly Selective Campus Academic Excellence Personal Best Giving Back to the Community Principal: Mr Tony Rudd The Weekly Pines Deputy Principals: Ms Meg Tulk Ms Cath Whalan 7 June 2013 – Newsletter No 17 FROM THE PRINCIPAL While Term 2 might be a short term, now that we are approaching the end, it is certainly becoming eventful. Monday evening saw our Year 10 students and their parents begin thinking about courses of study available at Manly SC, and across Northern Beaches Secondary College, for students entering Stage 6 studies in 2014. Ms Tulk gave a comprehensive overview of Board of Studies requirements, NBSC possibilities and Manly SC requirements. In addition, for the first time at our campus, students will be able to select their preferred course of study on-line, and thanks to Mrs Whalan, this process was also explained to students. Our new WebChoices software will allow us to process student requests more accurately and certainly much more efficiently. I urge students, and parents, to carefully consider options when choosing the preferred course of study for Stage 6. On Tuesday evening I had the pleasure of attending my first Parent/Teacher Evening at Manly SC. This night was well attended by parents and students from our Year 12 and 9 cohorts and, in speaking with many parents, provided good feedback to parents regarding the progress of students in addition to what can be presented in Half Yearly academic reports. It is always heartening to see parents attending events such as this at our school as it clearly reinforces the true partnership that we have in providing the very best of educational opportunities for our students. This cannot be achieved effectively without the support of our parent body. This week again, I have been informed of further outstanding sporting success by our students. Sita Paling recently competed in the NSW All Schools Diving Championships placing 2 nd in the 17 Years 3 Metre Springboard and 1 st in the 17 Years Tower events. Sita was also 1 st in the School Sport Australia Qualifying competition. We look forward to hearing of Sita’s future successes as she moves in to higher level competition. In addition, Tim Brand (Year 9) recently represented Northern Sydney Region (NSR) at the NSW CHS Hockey championships. Tim’s team was successful in winning this championship – the first time that NSR has achieved this. Tim then went on as a Sydney representative to the NSW Under 15 Hockey championship, again winning the state title. As a result of his achievements, Tim has now been selected to represent in the NSW Under 15 Boys, the NSW Under 16 Schoolboys and the NSW Under 18 Boys squads. Congratulations to both Sita and Tim on their outstanding achievements. Today, our Year 12 debating team represented our school in the Northern Sydney Region Debating final against Cheltenhan Girls High at Cheltenham. Our team debated very strongly in the affirmative on the topic ‘That voting should be compulsory’. Unfortunately, our team did not win this debate and finish as runners-up in this very strong competition. Congratulations to Tess Gordon, Sarah Jackson, Fred Drake and Henry Lin on their success in proceeding to the regional final. Year 7 Geography Excursion
Bicentennial Park (Wetlands)
Report by: Josh Yoe and Aidan Campbell
On the 28 May, Year 7 Geography classes went on an
excursion to the Bicentennial Park Wetlands.
We got to school and lined up ready to get on the
bus. It was a long bus trip, through the tunnel and
finally arriving at Bicentennial Park. When we
arrived, we all had some morning tea and went to
the bathrooms. We then split up into our separate
classes, got worksheets and were ready to go.
Our class (7G) went to a tall tower to the south of the
wetlands and made a line sketch of the wetlands. In
the sketch, we drew the dry forest surrounding the
wetlands and the She-oaks that guarded it. We could
also see into the city and drew some of the buildings.
After that, we entered the wetlands.
We moved on to the second activity - testing the
environment. We made observations (looking at the
wind movement and temperature), got wet (testing
the water), and used brown squishy sediment.
Luckily, we used gloves.
We went back to where we had our morning tea to
eat lunch. After lunch we went into the wetlands
again and took notes about the features of the
environment. We took sketches and put a sample of
mud in our books!
showed us pictures and certain areas. It was
interesting looking at how much the area had
changed.
We had a great time at Bicentennial Park. We learnt
things we never knew and did things we normally
wouldn’t. We all went home exhausted wishing we
could all do it again.
INVITATION
To all our Volunteers - THANK YOU
31 July from 6.30pm to 8.30pm
One of the things that makes
Manly such a great school is our volunteer
community and we'd like to say thanks!
Parents and friends volunteer in so many ways for
our school. At Manly we have volunteers who help
in the canteen, on committees, behind the scenes at
the musical doing costumes, scenery and makeup,
with the band program and performances, at
working bees for the grounds, at the clothing pool,
by assessing the digital portfolios for Year 10, by
organising the Year 7 welcome, by arranging and
distributing food and drinks at open days and band
performances and rehearsals for the Musical,
organising fund-raisers such as Art59 and the City-to
Surf volunteers and maybe in other ways too!
So please, if you have volunteered at the school in
the last year or so, come and join us on 31 July from
6.30pm to 8.30pm in the Foyer for a drink or two and
some finger food, and a little light networking
amongst your school community.
We will need to know numbers for catering, so
please RSVP to Meron Clark at
meron@msce.arbler.com.
Belated thanks to the parents of
Adam Busselmann, Year 7, for their
donation of a $200 Surfection
Voucher to the silent auction of
Art59.
Apologies from Maria Romeo for having missed acknowledging
you last week with all the other families.
Our last activity was comparing Homebush Bay in
1930 and now. We used a computer program which

Manly Musical parents
It is tradition at the school Musical that we provide a
warm, substantial dinner to the performers, crew,
teacher and parent helpers before each performance
(except the Saturday performance). Not only does it
mean that the students get a wholesome dinner
before they perform, but we set out tables in the
canteen area where they all sit down together,
thereby adding to the team and community spirit of
the event.
Pauline Adams and I are coordinating the food – for
the most part it is prepared offsite at a caterer - and
we then include fruit, dessert and drink, and serve it
to the students/teachers etc. Given the quantities
and the short time in which we have to serve dinner
(usually from about 5-6pm), we need helpers – in
fact, it is impossible to manage on our own. We will
be providing dinner on the nights of Tuesday 18 th ,
Wednesday 19 th , Thursday 20 th and Friday 21 st June,
and require helpers please! If you are attending the
musical that night, you are guaranteed of being on
time and, in fact, early, for the show.
The helpers will be required to warm food, cut up
fruit, set out tables and chairs, serve and clear up
afterwards. On each night we would require at least
four helpers from 4pm - approximately 6.30pm.
Pauline and I will be there every night to coordinate
things.
WORKING BEE
Duke of
Edinburgh’s
Award
What are our Duke of Ed students up to ?
GOLD
Students are continuing their Skill, Volunteering and
Fitness activities. Gold level students need to do an
hour a week for at least 12 months of each activity.
That’s great commitment! Gold participants need to
organise a Residential – 5 days voluntarily completing
a purpose. For ideas check out www.dukeofed.com.au.
Most students have completed their Practice
Expedition. The Outdoor Education Group will be
running a qualifying hike for NBSC students on
December 13-16 th in the Blue Mountains.
Registration will open Term 3.
Sunday 16 June
9:00am – 1pm
Followed by a “Thank You”
Sausage Sizzle and Drink
The P&C Committee would welcome the assistance
from students and parents on this day with a few
specific jobs we have planned, ie:
1. Installation of a new small fence around the
garden beside the rear of the TAS building
and rejuvenation of this area.
2. Installation of a garden border on either side
of the driveway in front of the TAS building,
near the bus stop.
3. Installation of a few seats above the
basketball court.
4. As usual, we have some bark to spread
around the top field, along Harbord Road.
5. If numbers permit, we might also do some
bush regeneration and clearing in the
Bushland along Headland Road.
To help with some of these jobs we will be hiring a
Dingo, with Auger Bit and 4in1 Bucket, so guys and
girls come along and have some fun and learn how to
drive this amazing little machine!
For Catering and Planning purposes please email
David Nord (dnord@optusnet.com.au) to confirm
your attendance.
their Bronze and commence Silver by the end of the
term. Silver takes at least 6 months to complete, so
you are encouraged to start now to finish by the end
of the year.
Many students have already started Silver this year
and have commenced their activities – well done!
The Practice Pack and Paddle expedition will take
place on Friday 6 th – Sunday 8 th September –
registrations are open now. The Qualifying Pack and
Paddle will be on Friday 8 th – Sunday 10 th November.
Please contact Mrs Yorston for more details as to
how to register for Silver and for the Practice
Expedition.
BRONZE
Congratulations to all those students who are
regularly participating in their skill, volunteering, and
fitness activities! Remember one component needs
to be 6 months, the others are 3 months. When you
have completed your required hours and months, ask
your assessor to sign the ‘Offline Records’ and hand
in to Mrs Yorston. If you have not commenced your
activities you are encouraged to do so ASAP so that
you can complete your entire Bronze award by the
end of the year. This means making sure you have
submitted your Award Plan, Assessor forms (if
required) and have been logged on the Duke of Ed
Online Record Book.
Most students have completed their Practice
Expedition, with others doing their training and hike
in the July holidays. The Qualifying Expedition will
take place as part of the Year 9 camp in term 4.
