FROM THE PRINCIPAL
In yet another first for me at Manly Selective
Campus, it was my absolute pleasure to have been
able to present students with Principal Awards at
special assemblies on both Thursday and Friday.
Approximately 250 students (see complete list later
in this bulletin) in total were recognised for
outstanding academic excellence and consistent
commitment to studies displayed during Semester 1.
Students were justifiable proud of their
achievements as they came to receive their
certificates in front of even prouder parents and
grandparents who have no doubt played a significant
role in supporting students to achieve at such a high
level. I would like to thank all of those family
members who took the time to attend these
assemblies ‐ it is a real honour to have you visit our
school for events such as this.
To those students who did not achieve a Principal’s
Award this semester, keep striving for your personal
best and aim for academic excellence in all that you
do. I was very heartened to speak with a Year 11
student receiving his very first Principal’s Award after
realising at the end of Year 10 that he had not
realised his potential and then set himself a number
of goals to do better. One of those goals was to
achieve a Principal Award. He is now well on the way
to further improvement.
In returning to school following the vacation period it
was again heartening to hear of some of the
activities our students had been involved in during
their ‘vacation’. You would have read on the front
page of Imogen D’Souza’s adventure as part of a
Youth United Nations delegate to east Timor. What a
wonderful experience! In addition to that, Eleanor
Brownlie of Year attended the Global Young Leaders
Conference in Washington and New York.
This conference involved approximately 350
teenagers from all over the globe, meeting together
to learn about global leadership and diplomacy over
ten days. Eleanor attended meetings with US State
Department representatives, learnt about crosscultural
communication, met embassy
representatives, heard from a human trafficking
survivor/advocate and went to the UN. Various fun
activities were squeezed in as well, such as 4th July
fireworks and a Broadway show. Eleanor learnt a lot,
not least from meeting young people from so many
different countries. Her leadership group included
other students from Bulgaria, Saudi Arabia, South
Africa, China, Japan, Trinidad and Tobago, Portugal,
Canada, USA and Spain. Thea Kable competed in the
Oceania Fencing Competition coming 5 th overall in
her division, with her team doing even better, placing
second. Finally, we had a number of students attend
the State Senior Music Camp who, according to Mr
Steve Williams from the DEC Arts Unit, excelled with
both their performance and work ethic. So, no doubt
a busy ‘holiday’ period for all of those students.
Congratulations.
We have seen significant improvements to the
grounds around the bus bay, basketball courts and in
one of our Science laboratories over the holiday
period. With thanks to Mr David Nord, we now have
improved access for students to the bus bay allowing
for easier access to the buses during those peak
times. The new retaining wall also looks significantly
better than the old ARC style fencing. The new
retaining wall along the edge of the basketball courts
finishes that area off and will also provide for
additional seating once fully completed. One Science
laboratory has been completely refitted with new
benches and hardware providing a much more
inviting environment for student learning. We are
currently in negotiation to have our remaining 3
Science laboratories upgraded in the next holidays.
Just as we encourage continual improvement in our
students, we too look for continual improvement in
what we provide to enhance their experiences.
Today Ms Tulk was able to present our current Year
12 cohort with a small token of ‘gifts’ as they move in
to final preparation for the HSC. Their ‘Little GEM’
bags contained goodies that just might assist them in
these next few weeks. An apple, for good health and
to keep the doctor away, bottled water to stay fluid
and hydrated, an energy bar for sustained effort and
a ‘mintie’ for moments like these were just a few of
the items in the bag. Most importantly of all was the
very elite ‘gem’ encrusted ring that signifies at each
and every student is a gem to be cherished. Year 12,
we wish you all the best in the coming weeks and
look forward to assisting you even further as you
strive to achieve your goals.
REPORT ON RECENT YOUTH UNITED
NATIONS PROJECT
By Imogen D’Souza (Year 11)
As a member of the 2013 Youth United Nations
Australian Pacific Project delegation, I spent my two
week holidays in East Timor on a diplomacy and
development tour that aimed to build sustainable aid
partnerships between youth networks. The trip had
been six months in the making ‐ raising money for
flights, seeking sponsorship, wincing through typhoid
injections ‐ and it wasn't until I arrived at Darwin
airport that I met most of the other ten high school
age delegates from across Australia who I'd be
travelling with. From there, we embarked on a 55
minute plane ride to a place vastly different to
anywhere I'd ever been.
The next two weeks became a blur of cross‐country
touring in huge trucks over roads that were more
pot‐hole than anything. Although everyone got sick
from the heat, the roads and the strange food, it
didn't spoil the experience at all. After exploring the
tragic history of Timor in the capital city, we spent a
week in the mountainside town of Maliana,
consulting with local youth organisations about their
plans for the future and learning about intercultural
relationships in a very authentic simulation of life as
an aid worker. I went into the experience knowing
East Timor was the poorest country in Asia but found
myself constantly confronted by the extent of this
poverty; basic sanitation is lacking and flush toilets
are a rarity, as are showers, only kids whose parents
can afford it go to school past the age of 12 and in
some schools a blackboard propped up on shoes is
the only equipment. However, I was comforted by
the culture of cooperation which discouraged
corruption and the misuse of aid. Progress can be
seen in healthcare and education across the country,

and as the years since Indonesian occupation fade,
Timor flourishes.
We travelled from the bustling coastal cities of Dili
and Baucau, to the countryside where coffee and rice
plantations border the huge central mountain range.
The natural beauty is breathtaking. During Pacific
Project, I learnt about the importance of building
ethical aid relationship that don't impose a
westernised way of life and having strong
international relationships with the Pacific region but
I also had an incredible time exploring a new and
exciting country with a unique group of young
people.
I urge anyone with an interest in travelling to Timor
to buy a ticket as soon as possible. There is no need
to feel unsafe or worried about the situation there.
You will find yourself in a country rich in vivid culture
and history, surrounded by beautifully spirited and
happy people who deserve the benefits tourism can
bring. My experiences in East Timor have been
incredibly eye opening, and I hope Australians can
continue to support and befriend our young
neighbour. For any budding diplomats who would be
interested in applying for next year's Pacific Project,
visit the UNYA website because applications open
now. You won't regret it.
To all our parent Volunteers
Please come to a Thank You evening in the
school foyer on Wednesday 31 July
from 6.30 – 8.30pm
One of the things that make Manly such a great
school is our volunteer community and we'd like to
say thanks!
Parents and friends volunteer in so many ways for
our school. We have volunteers in the canteen, on
committees, behind the scenes at the musical with
costumes, scenery and makeup, with the band
program and performances, at working bees for the
grounds, at the clothing pool, by assessing the Year
10 digital portfolios, by organising the Year 7
welcome, by catering at open days and band
performances and rehearsals for the musical,
organising fund‐raisers such as Art59 and the City‐to
environment and the school…..?
For 2014 we need and will train you (and provide
support) for the role of:
complete the MYOB entry bimonthly and prepare the
financial reports at the end of the year.
Sunday 11 th August 2013
We need you!
Every year the Bands of MSC are invited to volunteer at the annual City to Surf fun run at
Bondi Beach’s finish line to raise funds for our band programmes. Our job is fun, simple,
and extremely important. MSC is highly regarded by the organisers for our excellent
customer service.
What we have to do
Take truckloads of bags belonging to the runners and place them in numerical order so
that when the runners arrive at the finish line we can give the bags back to them.
What we get

We get paid for every person who attends: family, friends, this is open to everyone, not
just MSC students, although we want to see as many of you there as possible!
In 2012 we raised almost $4000. More people = > $$
Event t-shirt
Sausage sizzle
Sun Herald
A school achievement award for community service
(equivalent to 4 x pink merits)
10kg block of chocolate for the year with most participants
LOTS OF FUN! It is an excellent way to meet other parents and students.
Details
Location: Near finish line at Bondi Beach
Arrival time: 6:30am Estimated finish time: 12:00pm
(this is due to road closures)
Parking: Limited car parking is available, so car pooling is a must! If you can bring a
car full of people we can probably get you a parking permit at a nearby car
park. There are shuttle buses to take us from the car park to the beach.
Contact: Call Angela Aguam on 0422 618780,
or email angieaguam@yahoo.com
to volunteer for this event. Remember this
is open to all MSC students, not just band
students.
