School of Medicine Loses Benefactor 

The Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine faculty, staff and students 

mourned the loss of the school’s namesake, Joan C. Edwards when she lost 

a courageous battle with cancer on May 7, 2006. She and her late husband 

Jimmy left a legacy for Huntington and the entire Tri-State by funding the 

Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Edwards Comprehensive 

Cancer Center opened January 9, 2006, and provides state-of-the-art 

cancer care for adult patients to children. 

Born in London, England, in 1918 

and raised in New Orleans, Joan 

Edwards cut short a promising career 

as a jazz singer to move to Huntington 

in 1937 with her new husband, James 

F. Edwards. 

During her 54-year marriage, 

Mrs. Edwards became a partner in 

her husband’s business enterprises, 

including racing thoroughbreds 

internationally and working with 

contractors and crews to revamp 

the couple’s four horse racing tracks. 

After assisting her husband with the 

Edwards family’s mattress business, 

NAMACO Industries, she ultimately 

became its chief executive officer, 

overseeing three factories. 

After James Edwards’ death 

in 1991, she was instrumental in 

implementing his vision to create a 

cancer center at Cabell Huntington 

Hospital, medical student scholarships 

at Marshall University, a conservatory 

at the Huntington Museum of Art, 

and a retirement living center through 

the West Virginia Diocese of the 

Episcopal Church. 

A noted philanthropist, Mrs. 

Edwards personally donated more 

than $22 million to Marshall 

University and its medical school, 

which was named in her honor in 

2000. Her individual contributions to 

the university have supported growth 

in its athletics and arts programs, the 

creation of a jazz studies program, the 

establishment of the Susan Edwards 

Drake Alzheimer’s Care Center, the 

creation of a children’s cancer center 

within the Edwards Comprehensive 

Cancer Center, and the establishment 

of an operating endowment for the 

cancer center. 

“Joan Edwards was a glamorous and 

genteel person -- charitable, visionary, 

gracious, sophisticated, insightful 

and very, very intelligent,” said Dr. 

Charles H. McKown, Jr., Marshall’s 

vice president for health sciences and 

dean of the Joan C. Edwards School of 

Medicine. 

“One of her passions was good 

health, and with virtually all of her 

passions she had one significant 

perspective: to focus her resources 

to provide long-lasting, far-reaching 

benefits,” he said. “In health, she made 

her impact known through Marshall’s 

medical school and the cancer center, 

which has brought to our region a new 

level of care for malignant illness. The 

people who will benefit most from her 

efforts are not necessarily those of 

us here today but our children, our 

grandchildren and many generations 

to come.” 

Mrs. Edwards received the 

Regent’s Award of the American 

College of Healthcare Executives 

for her contributions to health care. 

She also was inducted into Marshall’s 

Lewis College of Business Hall of 

Fame, made an honorary alumnus 

of the School of Medicine, awarded 

the Doctor of Humane Letters degree 

from Marshall, and inducted into the 

Huntington Wall of Fame.

Clinical Education & Outreach Center 

Valuable Addition to SOM 

The Clinical Education & 

Outreach Center is another major 

step forward for the School of 

Medicine. The $22.5 million, 80,000 

square-foot center will house muchneeded 

teaching facilities and clinical 

education clinics. The center was 

developed as part of Marshall’s Robert 

C. Byrd Center for Rural Health. 

“Over time, we will be able to 

train 50 percent more doctors,” said 

Jim Schneider, associate dean of 

the medical school. “This is vitally 

important considering the age and 

health demographics of the region. 

Our population is becoming older and 

sicker, with an abundance of chronic 

health problems such as diabetes, heart 

and lung disease. We have a need for 

more cardiac and pulmonary care 

specialists in southern West Virginia 

and surrounding areas.” 

The ground floor will house a 

state-of-the-art medical education 

teaching facility, including a 124- 

seat tiered classroom, several smaller 

classrooms and student study areas. “A 

Clinical Skills Laboratory will allow 

students to work with computer-based 

models and live-simulated patients,” 

Schneider added. “This revolutionary 

technology will better prepare them 

for clinical practice.” 

Three floors of patient care and 

clinical education space will allow for 

up to 75,000 patient visits per year. 

Services will include general internal 

medicine as well as endocrinology, 

gastroenterology, infectious diseases, 

pulmonary and rheumatology. The 

Diabetes Center and the Hanshaw 

Geriatric Center will relocate to the 

facility as well. The top floor will 

house a Heart Institute, combining the 

resources of the cardiology, pulmonary 

and cardio-thoracic surgery faculty. 

The center, which will employ 

more than 50 physicians and 150 staff, 

will generate more than $10 million 

in direct economic activity annually. 

This project is made possible through 

Sen. Robert C. Byrd’s efforts in 

securing two separate federal grants 

through the U.S. Department of 

Health & Human Services. 

“We are very appreciative of 

Senator Byrd’s involvement in 

providing this funding,” Schneider 

added. “We still need to raise money 

for teaching materials in the Clinical 

Skills Lab. A number of naming 

opportunities are available in our 

Bricks and Mortar Program. The 

Education Center, including the 

Clinical Skills Lab, conference rooms 

and each of the three clinic floors are 

available for naming.” 

The clinic is at the site of the 

former Fairfield Stadium that opened 

in 1928 and was the home of Marshall 

football until the 1990 season. There 

will be a plaque placed outside the 

outreach center commemorating the 

former stadium. 

Construction of the center is 

nearing completion and occupancy is 

expected in May 2007.

Dr. Maurice and Mrs. Diane Mufson 

Establish Award, Give Something Back 

Long time supporters Dr. Maurice 

and Diane Mufson have established 

The Dr. Maurice A. and Diane W. 

Mufson Award for the Joan C. Edwards 

School of Medicine. The $10,000 

expendable gift will be awarded at the 

rate of $1,000 per year for the next 10 

years to an entering medical student 

beginning August 2007. “We want 

to make it a little easier financially 

for a deserving student,” the Mufsons 

added. “The financial burden of 

medical school is very high. This is 

just a small way to help.” 

“I have been a faculty member 

since the school began in 1976,” 

Mufson said. “For all of the support 

Marshall University has given me over 

the years, as well as the opportunity to 

be a part of this medical community, 

my wife and I felt we wanted to give 

something back. We decided we 

wanted to do something positive for 

the School of Medicine.” 

The Mufsons also established the 

Dr. Maurice and Diane Mufson Award 

in 1997 for an outstanding graduating 

medical student who plans a career in 

internal medicine. 

In honor of Dr. Mufson’s longtime 

commitment to the medical 

community and school, he will receive 

the School of Medicine Alumni 

Association’s honorary alumnus award 

during Investiture on May 5. 

Mufson, who in 1976 became 

the first chair of the Department 

of Medicine, now serves as chair 

emeritus and is coordinator of research 

in the Department of Medicine. A 

native of Manhattan, he received his 

Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell 

University and his degree in Medicine 

from New York University School of 

Dr. Maurice A. & Mrs. Diane W. Mufson 

Medicine. Diane Mufson, a native of 

Long Beach, N.Y., is a psychologist 

in private practice with Associates in 

Psychology and Therapy. 

Class of 2006 rewards excellence 

through scholarship endowment 

On behalf of the Class of 2006, the 

class has endowed a scholarship in the 

School of Medicine to be awarded for 

the first time in Fall 2007 to a third year 

medical student. In what is considered 

Phase I of this project, the recipient 

must have demonstrated excellence 

in scholarship, professionalism, 

leadership and service. 

As the endowment grows and the 

interest is great enough, the annual 

scholarship will provide Littman 

Cardiology III stethoscopes to every 

incoming first 

year medical 

school student. 

“We felt this 

could be a way 

to demonstrate 

to the faculty of 

the School of 

Medicine how much we appreciate 

their hard work and commitment to 

our education and future,” said Class 

President Shane Wells, MD. “Also, 

we wish to reward a student who is not 

only excellent in academics but also 

demonstrates qualities of a physician 

worthy to serve the community. Our 

profession is built on a foundation 

of service to others. We need hard 

working, innovative and dedicated 

people to devote their lives to 

improving mankind.” 

Wells cites the hard work of Dr. 

Albert Esposito who worked tirelessly 

for more than two decades to improve 

access to health care in Southern 

West Virginia. “In spite of opposition 

and frequent disappointment, Dr. 

Esposito succeeded in bringing health 

care to the region through the School 

of Medicine in 1978. Because of this 

accomplishment, we join a generation 

of alumni who have gone before us to 

spread the good name of the Marshall 

University Joan C. Edwards School of 

Medicine. Dr. Esposito understood the 

importance of looking to the future 

and paving the way for others.” 

The other class officers are Drs. 

Andrea Marcum, vice president; 

Christopher Russell, treasurer; and 

Robin Bush, secretary. The gift 

was presented during graduation 

ceremonies last May and it is the 

first time that a graduating class 

has endowed a scholarship at their 

graduation.

MUJCESOM Hosts Reception at the 

WVSMA Annual Meeting 

Along with hosting the annual reception, one of the highlights of this year’s 

West Virginia State Medical Association annual meeting was Dr. Elizabeth 

“Betty” Spangler, Class of 1986 and the first woman president of the WVSMA, 

culminate her illustrious year as president. On behalf of the School of Medicine’s 

faculty, staff, students and alumni, we congratulate you on a job well done.

August 10. Dr. Jodi M. Cisco, Class 

of 1997 and current member of the 

SOM Alumni Association, was the 

guest speaker. As in the past, the 

School of Medicine graduates and 

friends purchased white coats or book 

credits at the Marshall University 

bookstore for each first-year student. 

The interest and response has been so 

good that we were able to give each 

student $100.00 in book credits as 

opposed to last year’s $50.00.

Marshall University’s Annual Scholarship Honor Reception 

At the University’s annual Scholarship Honor Reception on April 23, 2006, donors or representatives of donors who 

have established scholarships for the School of Medicine have the opportunity to meet the recipients of their generosity, 

and in turn, the appreciative recipients are able to personally meet and thank the donor.

Match Day 2006 

Marshall’s medical graduates will 

enter the fields of family practice 

and obstetrics/gynecology at rates 

well above the national average, and 

the school is at a 3-year high in the 

percentage of graduates staying in 

West Virginia. 

“These results look incredible 

to me,” said Dr. Aaron McGuffin, 

senior associate dean for medical 

student education. “We’re putting our 

graduates all over the country in great 

institutions, and several excellent 

students are staying here at Marshall 

as well. More than 55 percent of our 

students are going into primary care 

specialties, and nearly half will be 

practicing in West Virginia.” 

Based on information released 

March 16 by the National Resident 

Matching Program, Marshall 

graduates are entering OB/GYN at 

nearly twice the national average 

(9.3 percent vs. 5.3 percent), and 

entering family practice at 1.3 times 

the national average (16.3 percent 

vs. 12.5 percent). When students 

who obtained residencies outside 

the national program are counted, 

Marshall’s percentage in family 

practice rises to 20 percent. 

In addition to the 49 percent of 

graduates staying in West Virginia, 

students will be completing their 

residencies at 20 institutions across the 

United States, including Wake Forest, 

Dartmouth and Johns Hopkins.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION UPDATE 

In Memoriam 

Harts remember the School of Medicine in their estate 

The Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine has received a generous gift from 

the estate of Dr. Rinard Z. and Margaret Hart of Claremont, Calif., both 

1942 graduates of Marshall College. The Harts both passed away during the 

summer of 2006. 

The gift will endow the Dr. Rinard Z. Hart and Margaret Ann Gibson 

Hart Scholarship for the School of Medicine in honor of Linda S. Holmes 

and her tenure as director of the Marshall University Alumni Association 

from 1984 to 1998. Holmes is now director of development and alumni affairs 

for the School of Medicine. The scholarship, which was realized through the 

Harts’ life insurance plan, will be awarded to a deserving medical student to 

be used for medical education expenses. It may be renewed for up to three 

years. 

The Hart’s bequest will also establish four other scholarships at Marshall 

University: the William B. and Cora Alice Gibson Scholarship; the Rinard 

Z. and Margaret Ann Gibson Hart Endowment for Erickson Alumni Center; 

the John Frank Bartlett Scholarship in honor of the former dean of Arts and 

Sciences; and The Kenneth Karl Loemker Scholarship, in honor of former 

Marshall professor of psychology. 

Dr. Hart, who practiced internal medicine in Claremont, was an avid 

collector of rare books and had a deep interest in the culture and history 

of the American West. Margaret shared his interest in rare books, but her 

first love was the theatre. She was also involved in historical restorations in 

the Claremont area. The Harts were members of the Heritage Society and 

the John Marshall Society, both of which provide recognition to men and 

women who make significant financial commitments and contributions to 

the growth and development of Marshall. 

“Rinard and Margaret Ann were fantastic individuals who loved life, 

the arts and particularly Marshall University,” said Holmes. “I feel that my 

life was enriched by having the honor and privilege of calling them friends 

and maintaining contact with them over many years. The Harts embodied 

what it is to be a true son and daughter of Marshall and their love of the 

university will live on through their generous gifts of scholarships to their 

beloved alma mater.” 

The Harts are survived by three children, Pam Gares of Grimesland, 

N.C.; Martha Dees of City Island, N.Y.; and James Hart of Pomona, Calif.

Dr. Edward B. Hunter, Jr, Class of 1996, passed away on Wednesday, 

November 29, 2006, at the Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, 

Va. He had been a resident of the Bluefield area since 1999 where he had a 

family practice. Dr. Hunter was an avid outdoorsman and loved all types of 

sports. He is survived by his wife Christina A. Hunter and two sons, Brian of 

Maryland and Matthew of Washington, D.C.

Richardson has a unique 

background as a physician. A native 

of Cross Lanes, he graduated from 

West Virginia State College with 

a teaching degree in biology and 

chemistry. He taught school in the area 

for 10 years, earning along the way a 

master’s degree in education at West 

Virginia University and a doctorate in 

education at what is now the Marshall 

University Graduate School. He even 

worked for the State Department of 

Education. 

“While working in this last 

administrative job, I realized it was just 

not that exciting,” said Richardson. “I 

had always wanted to go to medical 

school but got sidetracked. I decided 

this was the time.” 

Richardson was accepted in 

Marshall’s program and graduated 

in 1993 with a specialty in internal 

medicine. He is in private practice 

in Huntington. Effective January 1, 

2007, he is the official hospitalist 

for St. Mary’s Hospital. “This is a 

new specialty in West Virginia,” said 

Richardson. “I specialize in the care 

of hospitalized patients only. This is 

considered a more efficient way of 

practicing medicine, allowing the 

patient’s primary care physician to 

spend more time in his or her office 

treating patients. 

As president of the Alumni 

Association, Richardson hopes to 

get maximum participation from 



all graduates. “We recently had our 

1,000th graduate,” Richardson said. 

“I would like to see an overwhelming 

number of them become members of 

the Alumni Association.” 

In order to become a member, one 

makes an annual $50.00 membership 

gift to the School of Medicine Alumni 

Association. A gift of $500 makes one 

a Lifetime member. 

“The faculty, staff, and alumni 

of the School of Medicine made it 

possible for us to realize our dreams 

of becoming a physician and live a 

lifestyle we enjoy,” Richardson said. 

“It is an obligation for alumni to help 

those who come after us, and support 

the institution.” 

Richardson also serves on the 

board of the Marshall University 

Alumni Association representing the 

Graduate College. 

The president-elect will be Dr. 

Paul R. Durst, Class of 1984. 

A Special Thank You

School of Medicine’s “Silver Celebration” 

Sparkles with Alumni Returnees 

In 2006 the School of Medicine 

celebrated a major historic milestone, 

the Class of 1981’s 25th Reunion! 

The “Silver Celebration,” held on 

Sept. 8-9, was part of the 20th Annual 

Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine 

Homecoming Weekend. 

Also returning were the classes 

of 1986 (20-year reunion), 1991 (15- 

year reunion), 1996 (10-year reunion) 

and 2001 (5-year reunion). 

Events included a reunion class 

luncheon, CME sessions, and a special 

celebratory dinner for the Class of 

1981 at the Guyan Country Club. 

The dinner was followed by the Silver 

Reunion Celebration at the Radisson 

Hotel with live music by the Oakwood 

Road Beer Band. Tours of the MU 

Medical Center, the Robert C. Byrd 

Biotechnology Science Center and 

the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer 

Center showcased the growth of the 

school in the past 25 years. 

A tailgate party at Herd Village 

prior to the MU vs. Hofstra Game 

provided an opportunity for everyone 

to kick back and relax. 

Dr. Patrick Bonasso, who jokes 

that he is the first graduate of the 

School of Medicine since there were 

no “A’s,” had a good time reminiscing 

and spending time with classmates and 

former professors. “It was an honor 

and a pleasure to see Dr. Robert Coon, 

the first dean, and former Marshall 

President Dr. Robert Hayes. When we 

were students, we really looked up to 

them, so it was nice to chum around 

with them at the events. And Linda 

Holmes treated us all like ambassadors 

on the red carpet. It was a phenomenal 

homecoming.” 

“The School of Medicine gave me 

the opportunity to become a doctor 

and stay in the state to help the people 

of West Virginia,” Bonasso added. “It 

was an easy decision for me.” Bonasso 

and his associates own WomanCare 

Inc., with offices in Fairmont and 

Bridgeport, W.Va. 

Dr. Jack Toney, an infectious 

disease specialist and professor of 

medicine at the University of South 

Florida College of Medicine, was 

impressed to see how the School of 

Medicine has come to excel in all 

fields of primary care. “The fact that 

14 out of 18 of the graduates returned 

speaks very highly of the SOM,” Toney 

said. “We were all so comfortable with 

each other, it was almost as if we had 

just taken a week off school to get 

back together. Seeing that graduates 

have gone all over the United States 

to practice medicine shows how the 

school has developed a national 

reputation.” 

Toney was accepted as a 

medical student at both Marshall 

and W.V.U. “I had issues with West 

Virginia University, so I wrote them 

a condescending letter,” Toney said. 

“Then I found out Marshall might not 

be accredited! I took my chance and it 

was the right decision.”

what the School of Medicine meant to them during

be fine with me. There are a lot of 

special people here, and Huntington 

is a place where you can learn a lot 

though all aspects of life.” 

Dr. Brenda Smith was proud to 

see that her colleagues were successful 

in putting their skills to work. 

“As medical students, there was a 

tremendous amount of information 

we were expected to learn. It was 

overwhelming. More than one of us, 

in frustration, asked ‘Why can’t they 

just teach us what we need to know 

to practice medicine.’ The answer 

to that question was simple. They 

didn’t know what we would need to 

know to practice medicine in the ever 

changing world of science and disease. 

But our professors gave us that basic 

understanding that was so important. 

They instilled in us the skills we 

would need to meet the challenges 

ahead. I was proud that we had met 

the challenges. I was proud to be a

Dr. Stephen Smith was glad to 

see former classmates he had not seen 

since graduation. “We were a small 

class, and now many of us are happy 

and successful,” Smith said. “Linda 

Holmes and Dr. McKown put together 

a first-class affair and the members 

appreciated it very much.” 

Dr. Sandra Joseph calls the 

reunion an event she will never 

forget. “Not only did Linda Holmes 

orchestrate a fantastic event, the 

members of my class were showered 

with memories in the form of pictures, 

publications and personalities” Joseph 

said. “The reunion was priceless, not 

only because of the opportunity to visit 

my classmates, but also because the 

school’s pioneers were there, too. The 

efforts of the late Dr. Esposito, Dean

Coon, Dr. Hayes, and the perseverance

to ultimately improve the healthcare 

of southern West Virginia. To have 

been part of this historical and very 

meaningful undertaking has not only 

been a privilege, but an answer to a 

higher calling to serve God and the 

people of West Virginia.” 

Joseph appreciates the focus on 

treating the whole patient. “This 

approach, I think, gave the SOM grads 

a unique characteristic consistent 

with the Hippocratic Oath,” she 

continued. “We learned that the 

practice of medicine is a science AND 

an art, encompassing respect and 

honesty. While seeing my classmates 

after 25 years, I wondered what ever 

happened to the time. Everything for 

a minute seemed the same, but then 

you couldn’t miss the fact that we were 

now experienced physicians whom 

the SOM had armed with the tools, 

the wisdom and the appreciation of 

patient-centered care, which is also 

reflected by subsequent grads all over 

the state and all over the country. 

From a shaky first year in 1978, to 

25 graduating classes, the School of 

Medicine also validates the courage 

and spirit embedded in the words ‘We 

Are…Marshall.”

unanimously voted to honor Cindy Warren by naming her as the 2006 

honorary member of the Association at this year’s Investiture on May 5. 

Cindy is a beloved, long-time member of the School of Medicine and 

serves as the assistant dean for admissions. Dr. Mark F. Sheridan, Class 

of 1987 and president of the School of Medicine Alumni Association,

Lifetime Membership in the School of 

Medicine Alumni Association was created at 

the inaugural meeting of the Board of Directors 

on October 9, 1992. During the inaugural year 

of the Alumni Association, sixty-one members

Dr. and Mrs. Daniel Cowell remember 

others through Take A Seat Campaign 

Dr. Dan Cowell feels a special sort 

of satisfaction and consolation when 

entering the Harless Auditorium at 

the School of Medicine. Over the 

past few years, he has purchased four 

auditorium seats as part of the Take 

A Seat Campaign, a $1,000 naming 

opportunity that provides resources to 

maintain and upgrade technology in 

the Harless Auditorium. 

“I was initially attracted to the 

Take A Seat Campaign when my wife, 

Diana, and I felt we needed to do 

something for our infant son, Joseph, 

who died in 1973,” Cowell said. “I 

thought it would be comforting to be 

able to sit in the row facing the plaque 

and see his name memorialized.” 

The Cowells followed with 

a chair and plaque to remember 

Diana’s deceased sister, Mary Suzanne 

Hamilton. “An uncounted number 

of people pass through the world 

without much recognition of their 

existence,” Cowell said. “Mary was 

mentally retarded, and we thought it 

was important to recognize her in this 

way.” 

The next chair was a graduation 

gift in honor of their son, Dana, 

who graduated from West Virginia 

University in 2006. This was followed 

by a fourth chair in memory of Diana’s 

mother, Grace Hamilton. Diana 

wished to see her mother’s name 

on a plaque, to honor her beautiful 

mother’s intelligence and grace after 

losing her to a twenty year struggle 

with Alzheimer’s Disease. 

“The Take A Seat Campaign is an 

excellent way to support the School of 

Medicine”, Cowell said. “The School 

stands to make $210,000 from this 

one idea. I am pleased that we bought 

the four seats. When I sit behind the 

names, I feel good about it and about 

the people they honor.” 

Cowell also established the Daniel 

J. and Theresa R. Cowell Scholarship 

for a deserving medical student in 

honor of his parents. “They were very 

hard-working people,” Cowell said. 

“My father was a self taught man who 

did not go past the third grade and my 

mother taught school for 42 years. I 

felt it would be enormously pleasing 

to both of them, and very meaningful 

to me, to honor them in this way.” 

Cowell is a part-time professor 

in the Department of Psychiatry 

and Behavioral Medicine and senior 

associate dean for graduate medical 

education. He came to the School of 

Medicine in 1994 and served as chair 

of his department for eight years before 

going part-time. He is a graduate 

of the University of Pennsylvania, 

the New Jersey College of Medicine 

and Georgetown University. Diana 

Cowell is a full-time social worker 

with Hospice of Huntington. 

The Take A Seat Campaign 

began in 1998 to help generate funds to 

enhance medical education and provide 

upgrades to the technology in the Harless 

Auditorium. The auditorium has 210 

seats and 84 have been sold. Donors are 

encouraged to draft their sentiment for 

the brass plaque that is displayed on the 

back of the purchased seat.

Why does the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School 

of Medicine promote charitable gift annuities? To help our 

physicians and friends who want to make larger gifts, but can’t 

afford to reduce their cash flow. Also, it helps our donors who 

are planning to provide a bequest make the gift now so they can 

take advantage of the income tax charitable deduction. And for 

older donors, an annuity may actually provide a larger payout 

from the asset than they might otherwise receive.

A deferred payment charitable 

gift annuity works well for 

younger donors who want to 

give to the School of Medicine 

and, at the same time, 

supplement their retirement 

programs. For example, the 

donor would designate a gift, 

for example $10,000, for a 

gift annuity which would 

be “programmed” to begin 

payments at retirement age - 

the longer the deferral period, 

the higher the annual payment. Even though the donor will not 

receive payments from the annuity for several years, an income 

tax charitable deduction is available for the year in which the 

gift is made. 

By careful management, the Foundation is able not only to make 

the scheduled annuity payments, but to have enough left over to 

help us carry forward our mission. In other words, these annuities 

benefit the donors and the School of Medicine.
