SCENARIO: You are a member of the computer support team at IT Solutions. You have been asked to update
the companies computer system to the latest operating system Windows Vista and to Microsoft Office 2007 and
carry out fault diagnosis. The company is currently running Windows 95 and use Microsoft Office 2000. There are 20
users each with their own machine and 4 printers connect to machines and shared by all users for printing.
After a lengthy discussion with management you have established the following:
• The hardware specifications for the existing machines are:
• 8 - Pentium I 100MHz, 64MB ram, 3.2GB hard drive
• 6 - 486DX 66, 32MB ram, 1.2GB hard drive
• 6- Pentium II 233MHz, 96MB ram, 6GB hard drive
• 4 - Cannon BJC 1000SP printers
• Ethernet network with cat5 cables
• You will need to ensure that the current printers will work with the new operating system or replace them.
• Security features are to be installed on the new operating system, so you will need to set up user accounts on
each machine and limit their rights.
• All machines are to be configured identically to the following configuration:
• Add print service for UNIX (they believe they will need this in the future)
• Upgrade to the latest version of Outlook
• Remove all games
• Configure the keyboard to English Australian
• Set the virtual memory to 1GB expandable automatically
• Configure the firewall exception to file and print sharing
• Create a folder on the C drive and give it the user’s name
• Configure Word 2007 to default to this folder when the user saves a document
• Schedule the backups to happen each night at 2am, the files in the users folder is what
needs to be backed up.
• Ensure all software is legal and all new hardware and software is documented.
THE TASK: Write a report, record the installation of software and carry a system diagnosis. This will include
evidence of everything from pre-installation to the operation of the software.
Written report must include:
• A feasibility report documenting the new system requirements and recommend if the existing system would be
suitable for the new operating system.
• A proposal for the new hardware required to run the new software efficiently, including costs. Document costs for
all software required to be purchased ensuring that all software will be run legal.
• A time schedule that identifies file management procedures before and after the upgrade and the training of staff.
• A suggest day and time for the upgrade to be carried for there to be minimal disruptions to the companies
operation.
• The documentation of all new products for licensing and warranty purposes.
• A virus scanning and update procedure.
• A suitable backup procedure.
• A post installation report summarizing the installation procedure and documenting any problems that occurred.
• Instructions for the user as to how to use the new system.
• Create an evaluation survey for the new system.
Installation must include:
• The installation and configuration of the system to the specified requirements.
• An outline of all the steps taken to complete the installation.
System diagnosis must include:
• An outline of the steps you would carryout to diagnose:
a) a problem of corrupt files
b) the inefficient running of a system.
