SCENARIO: You are a member of the computer support team at IT Solutions. You have been asked to update<br />

the companies computer system to the latest operating system Windows Vista and to Microsoft Office 2007 and<br />

carry out fault diagnosis. The company is currently running Windows 95 and use Microsoft Office 2000. There are 20<br />

users each with their own machine and 4 printers connect to machines and shared by all users for printing.<br />

After a lengthy discussion with management you have established the following:<br />

• The hardware specifications for the existing machines are:<br />

• 8 - Pentium I 100MHz, 64MB ram, 3.2GB hard drive<br />

• 6 - 486DX 66, 32MB ram, 1.2GB hard drive<br />

• 6- Pentium II 233MHz, 96MB ram, 6GB hard drive<br />

• 4 - Cannon BJC 1000SP printers<br />

• Ethernet network with cat5 cables<br />

• You will need to ensure that the current printers will work with the new operating system or replace them.<br />

• Security features are to be installed on the new operating system, so you will need to set up user accounts on<br />

each machine and limit their rights.<br />

• All machines are to be configured identically to the following configuration:<br />

• Add print service for UNIX (they believe they will need this in the future)<br />

• Upgrade to the latest version of Outlook<br />

• Remove all games<br />

• Configure the keyboard to English Australian<br />

• Set the virtual memory to 1GB expandable automatically<br />

• Configure the firewall exception to file and print sharing<br />

• Create a folder on the C drive and give it the user’s name<br />

• Configure Word 2007 to default to this folder when the user saves a document<br />

• Schedule the backups to happen each night at 2am, the files in the users folder is what<br />

needs to be backed up.<br />

• Ensure all software is legal and all new hardware and software is documented.<br />

THE TASK: Write a report, record the installation of software and carry a system diagnosis. This will include<br />

evidence of everything from pre-installation to the operation of the software.<br />

Written report must include:<br />

• A feasibility report documenting the new system requirements and recommend if the existing system would be<br />

suitable for the new operating system.<br />

• A proposal for the new hardware required to run the new software efficiently, including costs. Document costs for<br />

all software required to be purchased ensuring that all software will be run legal.<br />

• A time schedule that identifies file management procedures before and after the upgrade and the training of staff.<br />

• A suggest day and time for the upgrade to be carried for there to be minimal disruptions to the companies<br />

operation.<br />

• The documentation of all new products for licensing and warranty purposes.<br />

• A virus scanning and update procedure.<br />

• A suitable backup procedure.<br />

• A post installation report summarizing the installation procedure and documenting any problems that occurred.<br />

• Instructions for the user as to how to use the new system.<br />

• Create an evaluation survey for the new system.<br />

Installation must include:<br />

• The installation and configuration of the system to the specified requirements.<br />

• An outline of all the steps taken to complete the installation.<br />

System diagnosis must include:<br />

• An outline of the steps you would carryout to diagnose:<br />

a) a problem of corrupt files<br />

b) the inefficient running of a system.
