The achievements and significance of
Whiteley’s London period have been
generally overwhelmed by Whiteley’s
successes of the l970s and his celebrity
as Australia’s ‘Golden Boy’. Yet, it was in
London during the 1960s that Whiteley
forged an international reputation as he
achieved success that was nothing short
of meteoric. Although unknown when
he arrived in 1960, within four years he
could boast sales to the Tate and Victoria
and Albert Galleries, a glittering array of
international prizes, consecutive London
exhibitions and a contract with London’s
prestigious Marlborough Gallery.
The 2012 lecture explores this phase
as one of unique inventiveness in the
Whiteley oeuvre. Comparisons with later
works will show how the sculptural
and painterly techniques, themes and
concepts introduced during this decade
were crucial, providing a well from which
he would continue to draw inspiration
throughout his creative life.
Kathie Sutherland is an art advisor,
curator, researcher and writer. During
her long career in the arts, she has held
senior executive positions with both
Sotheby’s and Christie’s. Brett Whiteley: A
