President’s Message As summer slips into fall and kids return to school, I am once again reminded how much Marin traffic congestion is related to the shuttling of our children to and from their respective places of learning. However, I am heartened that every year, the number of parents and students participating in this great migration by foot or by human-powered wheel seems to increase. This shift is in no small part due to the great work of the Safe Routes to Schools program, in which 80% of all Marin elementary schools participate We’re making tremendous progress in middle and high schools too. The Coalition is asking members for stories about how our work has had impact on your life. While I’m clearly not an unbiased party, I would like to mention that MCBC’s work has made it much easier for me to ride my bike from Larkspur to San Rafael— via the Cal Park Tunnel. Whether I’m going to the Pacifics game at Albert Park or to my hair salon on Fourth, I love ditching my car for the cool, smooth whir of the tunnel. Now that the County has erected signage pointing users to this fantastic facility, I’m sure that many more folks will be joining me. The San Francisco Bay Trail Project has teamed up with the MCBC to implore the various agencies with jurisdiction over the south end of Alexander Avenue to make immediate safety improvements in this notoriously dangerous area. The MCBC, Bay Trail Project, Caltrans, National Park Service and the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway Transportation District have convened several on-site meetings where Alexander meets Highway 101 to discuss the myriad issues. We are happy to report that the majority of our recommendations have been accepted and implemented on site. However, the challenges are monumental; truly solving them will require a significant investment of engineering expertise, time and money. The National Park Service has performed a study of the area and we continue to coordinate and advocate for long-term solutions. It was great seeing such an enthusiastic response to our first annual MCBC Mt. Tam Dirt Fondo. While I was nearly speechless at the end of my 46-mile route, the burgers and beer assisted nicely in my recovery. We earned $18,000 from this event. Thank You! See you on the road/trail.
