PRESIDENT’S REPORT
This past season has seen somewhat of a change in the Club’s financial
position with our debt increasing at a steady rate. The raffle after Christmas
was very successful and the fifteen thousand dollars raised gave a much
needed boost to the Club’s bank account. I would like to thank Roland
Phillips, Wayne MacKenzie, Patrick low and the Junior Committee for their
hard work in making sure that the raffle was a success. Many thanks to those
businesses that contributed so generously with their prizes (Air Tahiti Nui,
Norman Ross, Wardrobe World, Alron Enterprises, Harvey Norman, and
Arkon Print.
The Club is once again indebted to our major sponsor HRV for their very
generous support and hopefully the relationship with HRV will continue into
the future. I would also like to personally thank our other sponsors Arkon
Print, Actions for Survival, Barfoot & Thompson, McDonalds Glen Innes &
Pakuranga, Ron Enright Tools, Fencible Law, Heritage Tiles, Kilimanjaro
Dental, Manukau Hyundai, Specsavers Botany and Pakuranga, Strategic
Advice, Jonathan Masters – Urologist and Zaveri Orthodontic and Periodontic Centre. We as a Club are grateful for your
generous support. Clubs like ours cannot function properly without support such as yours.
Our Club golf day run by Nigel Scott was once again very successful raising $1300. This event has now become a
permanent fixture on the Club’s calendar and one that allows our past and present members to meet sponsors and enjoy
a game of golf in relaxed surroundings.
Whilst this past season did not produce a premier title in either the two-day, one-day or T/20 competitions the side is to
be congratulated for the good effort that they put in. Ably led by Andrew de Boorder the side is always at a disadvantage
to other clubs in that we lose a number of players to the Auckland rep team.
Congratulations go to Kyle Mills on once again attaining New Zealand honours in the one-day and T/20 series. Also
congratulations to Colin de Grandhomme on making his Black Caps debut in the series against South Africa. Once again
we had a number of players in the Auckland Aces side: Kyle Mills, Colin de Grandhomme, Andrew de Boorder, Colin
Munro and Mitchell McClenaghan, with Donovan Grobbelaar representing the Auckland A team. Congratulations to you
all.
The president’s side was successful in winning that championship once again and congratulations to all players that
played in the side throughout the season. Our second presidents’ side also enjoyed a successful season. Both of these
sides provide a vital need for those players over the age of thirty five who want to enjoy a game of cricket and it is hoped
that we will continue to have two very competitive sides in that competition.
The junior division of the Club under the direction of Patrick Low continues to be strong. The Club is indebted to those
parents that give selflessly of their time to organising the many teams in this section of the Club. Patrick is resigning as
Chairman of the junior division and I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all the hard work that he has put
into this position over the past few years as well as his role as grade LO. This is sometimes a thankless and unrewarding
task that sometimes goes unnoticed.
Once again Wayne MacKenzie as Club Captain led the senior section of the Club with the end of the season prize giving
being a huge success. Wayne’s hard work and dedication to the Club are an inspiration to all.
Our Coaching under Dipak Patel continues to go from strength to strength and it is a pleasure to see so many current and
former HPCC members playing first class cricket around New Zealand that have been coached by Dipak at some stage
during their careers.
6
Once again Graham Dennis and his Board had another busy year. Roland Phillips continued to carry out his many duties
as General Manager and our thanks go to Roland and also to Virginia Hughes who does a great job with our financial
accounts. This year saw the resignation of our Administrator, Angela Dunn. I would like to thank Angela for her efforts
over the past 6 years and the Club wishes her well in her future pursuits. Angela has been replaced in the Administrator
role by Pam Phillips.
The Club’s congratulations must also go to two of our life members. Our Patron, Graeme Leggat, on receiving the Queens
Service Medal (QSM) honours for services to the community, and to Nick Craig on receiving NZ Cricket’s Sir Jack Newman
award for services to junior cricket and administration. These two honours are just recognition for two of our Club
members who have worked tirelessly for others over many years.
I believe that 2012/13 is going to be one of our most difficult years yet. Funding from gaming trusts to all sports clubs
appear to be “drying up”. Funds have to be obtained elsewhere i.e. sponsors. Sponsors are not easy to find and the
Board is going to have to come up with some new strategies to find funding and it is hoped that the club members may
come up with some ideas that can help us in this area.
We must all work together in order for this club to remain one of the powerhouses in Auckland Cricket.
Malcolm Haliday
President
BOARD CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
The days are just starting to get longer signifying that we have reached the right
side of winter, the side that leads towards a new cricket season.
2011/12 presented new challenges that encompassed all aspects of our club.
One of the biggest impacts has been the significant continued reduction in trust
grant funding that we have received. This has led to the club seeking other
sources of revenue primarily from sponsors. In addition some fund raisers have
produced mixed results. The most successful was the raffle that was put together
and delivered in a very short time frame.
Our financial status is far from unique in sporting circles and consistent with
other strugglers in the cricketing arena. We have seen in recent times other clubs
raise their game and offer their own facilities to their members rather than pay us revenue to utilise ours. Whilst at this
time keeping our heads above water is challenging it forces the promotion of new ideas and aspirations and in the years
to come I believe that we will look back and see this period as defining as our club goes forwards.
Quite simply if we do not adapt then Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club will slip into history and become a distant memory. I
have talked before in these reports about commitment, a collective responsibility and working together as a club. This is
one of the positives that is starting to emerge with the raffle a case in point. The next twelve months requires even more
commitment more dedication towards achieving these goals. The commitment and dedication however needs to come
from a wider spectrum and not from the same stalwarts that all clubs harbour.
As a club we need to develop our culture and discover respect for the hard working members that have laid the
foundations to enable us to be members today. I talk about respect and culture from a number of different perspectives
and experiences during the past twelve months. The most disturbing occurred whilst conducting a site inspection a few
weeks ago. Roland and I compiled a long list of works that need to be completed and plans for some exciting projects we
intend to undertake. During this inspection I was horrified to discover that our changing rooms had been vandalised with
graffiti smeared over the walls. This was not small but large obscene daubs that effectively defined our club. It defined
our club because the culprits were our members.
I wonder today if those who contributed to this vandalism have any idea of the clubs history or those members who are
contributing through a passion, desire and a love of the game, who wish to see our club be the best in the country. A club
is its members and its successes and failures are due to its members.
Pride, passion and commitment to this club needs to come from all if we are to move forwards. The close season has
seen ideas beginning to flourish and different areas of the membership starting to work towards the future. This must
continue, it must grow and fester in all areas.
Last year in this report I wrote “the next eighteen months are pivotal in the clubs development and some interesting
challenges lie ahead”. I still believe this to be true and between now and Christmas will prove to be a critical period in the
club’s future. We need more people to come forward, to offer their help to provide a positive influence in any way they
can.
I would like to say thank you to all those who have contributed to this club during the past twelve months and thank our
sponsors for their contribution. I would like to thank our volunteers and offer congratulations to all those who achieved
during the past season and look forward to increased successes in the season ahead. I would like to also thank our paid
staff who also offer their time and efforts well past their allotted contractual hours.
There are some exciting plans ahead especially in areas of ground development where a sizable sum has been allocated
to ground improvements by council. The senior committee are developing a player’s charter and there are a number of
other player projects underway set to improve the club culture as a whole. The process to motivate has been slow to date
but positive changes are certainly emerging and being lead by the players.
8
Our Juniors continue to thrive but our volunteer base is becoming thinner as lives become busier. If the trends continue
then there are some significant problems ahead which will need to be monitored carefully.
With so much change afoot it is easy to paint a gloomy picture. However the changes are part of an evolution pathway
that the club needs to take and I am sure that it will emerge stronger and in better shape following this process. We
simply need to remember that you the members are the club and without your time and commitment the club ceases to
exist.
YEAR IN REVIEW
Club individuals again showed their talents at the top level during the 2011-12 season. Kyle Mills was again selected to
play for the Black Caps as was new comer to the Black Caps, Colin de Grandhomme, who made his T/twenty and One
Day debut. Andrew de Boorder, Colin Munro and Mitchell McClenaghan also represented the Auckland Aces again.
Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club received principal club status from ACA following an annual audit on club compliance to
ACA bylaws under Club is the Hub (CITH). Despite a struggle for players at senior level we still managed to field the
required eight teams under the CITH system. A fantastic effort this year in senior subscription collections by Club
Captain, Wayne Mackenzie, and his fellow committee members.
10
We had nine ACA Championship winning teams for 2011/12:
• President’s Grade Championship – Blue
• One Day 5B Championship - Blue
• Year 8 Premier One Day Championship (pre–Christmas) - Maroon
• Year 8A Major Championship (post-Christmas) - Black
• Year 8B Championship (post-Christmas) - Green
• Year 7 Premier Minor Championship - Blue
• Year 6A Championship
• Junior Hearts U12 Grade Quickhit
• Womens’ Limited Overs Championship – South East
HUMAN RESOURCES (STAFFING)
Angela Dunn continued as the Club Administrator for the year, but has since resigned to further her career as an artist
with her love for painting pictures as the guiding influence. Special thanks to Angela for her valuable contribution over
the past six years. Dipak Patel remained Director of Coaching and Roland Phillips as General Manager. Casual paid
employees included the bar staff and Academy coaching staff. The Accounting and Treasury function of the Board was
again fulfilled on a voluntary basis by Virginia Hughes as head of the Finance & Admin Committee.
Our sincere thanks to all our volunteers who make substantial contributions with administration (Liaison Officers and
committee members), coaching, umpiring, scoring and general support.
WHITE CROSS PRIMARY SCHOOLBOYS CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT
The annual White Cross Primary School Boys District Tournament for cricketers in year 8 and below was again hosted by
HPCC at Lloyd Elsmore Park from the 27 th to 31 st December. The organisation and running of this event was again top
class and thanks must go to all those who assisted in ensuring that this tournament continues to be a success.
This year the two Manukau teams were again dominant over their opposition with both teams comfortably winning their
respective sections. HPCC again had a good representation of players in the two Auckland teams that were selected from
the tournament and both the Auckland teams were captained by HPCC players.
CRICKET WEEK
The week commenced with our annual clash against Cornwall for our junior tournament teams from year 4 to year 7 –
again Cornwall proved too strong for us and retained the trophy. We again hosted a local round of the primary schools
competition (Tuesday), had the local secondary schools T/20 games (Wednesday) and Monday night Twilight Cricket
also continued as well as the state of origin games (Thursday). Friday night games for juniors at our “picnic in the park”
evening is proving to be a great success. The week ended with the hosting of our Junior Quadrangular tournament in
which the teams managed to win back the trophy from University.
TWILIGHT CRICKET
Twilight cricket successfully continues to be a way for those who can’t make all day Saturday to still get in some fun
cricket. This year we tried a Thursday and Wednesday evening on top of the normal Monday nights and six additional
teams entered taking the number of teams this year to eighteen. Special thanks to our Twilight sponsor, David
McCullough from Ron Enright Tools, for again running a great competition.
11
HPCC LEGENDS
On 31 March 2012 the Club held another Legends evening at which Malcolm Haliday, our current Club President, and
Ian Shackelford, were added to the elite group of Club Legends. Congratulations to Malcolm and Ian.
TRAINING CENTRE
The quality programmes run by Dipak and his team show clearly in the successes through all our age groups. The HPCC
winter programmes were even more focused this year and again proved to be very successful with our players again
making up about two thirds of the Manukau District representative teams.
The club can be proud of the success of the training centres achievements.
12
CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT
Season 2011/12 was a tough season which saw a huge number of players used and although there were some
memorable highlights the season ultimately ended without any silverware, for the first for many years. Andy DeBoorder
was named the premier captain and was aided by Colin Munro when on Auckland Aces duty. Both Andy and Colin did a
fantastic job as did Hayden Gardner who was named the reserve team captain.
The Senior Committee worked hard in the lead-up to the start of the season and this ensured we had a positive start to
the season. This meant that both the premier and reserve team had largely successful starts to the season. Unfortunately
due to player availability, the second half of the season was poor and very few games were won post Christmas. The
Premier side was knocked out of the semi-final of the one day competition and finished 3rd in the league after qualifying
for the top 4 in the 2 day format. One positive outcome was the number of extremely talented young players we have at
the club. David Winn, Jamie Brown, Abrar Alam, Chris Lakov & David Quigg all made their premier team debuts this
season and contribute well on the field. A big thank you to Dipak Patel for once again providing excellent coaching and
support to the senior club.
The captains of the other two day teams, David Balme and Michael Good deserve great credit for the large number of last
minute changes to their teams that they suffer. Yet they are still are able to put out a team and continue to be
competitive. They do a great job for the club and spend many hours organising teams behind the scenes. Another thanks
to Syd Noble for stepping in to help out throughout the season as well.
Recruiting new players is an area in which we struggled to make any headway. Disappointingly we suffered a high level of
attrition and retirements at the conclusion of the 10/11 season and this was reflected in our poor showing in the second
half of the season. A highlight was the successful integration of 10 or so under18 players that enjoyed stepping up to the
senior ranks and some promising potential was shown.
A problem area for the senior club has been around the collection of outstanding fees, with the introduction of the new
player charter that players will need to sign before they play, we hope to avoid any ongoing issues in this area with the no
pay no play policy across the senior club.
This year also saw a lot more of our senior players coming back and sticking around after match-days to celebrate
achievements on/off the field and has contributed to an improved club culture. Once again we hope this grows further for
the 2012/13 season and Thursday nights can become a focal night at the club.
Thanks to Nigel Scott and Jeremy Andrews/Richard Keene for the trouble free running of the president grade.
One big positive to come from the season was the great success of the Senior Prize giving. Following on from last year’s
successful event, the night was based around a sit-down buffet dinner and awards ceremony. A largely entertaining night
was had, and congratulations to all award recipients. It was pleasing to see members of the clubs U18s and Junior
Representative Sides in attendance. Special thanks to Wade Johnson, Jamie Brown, Hayden Gardner, Wayne Mackenzie,
David Balme, & Jacob O’Callaghan for all their hard work in arranging and planning the event this year. We look forward
to more well-run events in the future.
The Senior Committee has worked well together and has taken more responsibility for the running of the Senior Club.
Special thanks to all those involved with the Senior Committee this season: David Balme Wayne Mackenzie, Alan Jones,
Syd Noble, Matt Sheehy, James Monaghan, Dave McCullough, & Andy De Boorder.
JUNIOR CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT
OVERVIEW
The Junior Club has made another solid contribution this year for Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club.
The number of teams playing every weekend around Auckland was slightly down from previous years as the number of
players has dropped from the prior year.
However it has been a pleasure to see the HPCC colours on display at grounds all over Auckland during the excellent
weather.
COMMITTEE
The Junior Committee had a mixture of experienced and new members in the 2011-12 season.
All activity in the Junior Club is governed by the Junior Committee Membership is principally composed of the respective
Grade Liaison Officers. All these people are volunteers who give hours / days of their time for the enjoyment of junior
cricket.
A huge vote of thanks goes to the respective Grade Liaison Officers who this year ensured that teams were structured and
equipped to be competitive and allowed for development of the game at all levels. New Liaison Officers brought new and
fresh ideas to the running of their respective grades and together with the experienced members can only benefit HPCC
and the Junior Committee as a team. However a number of the current Junior Committee members have given notice of
their intention to stand down. This will definitely leave a huge hole in the Junior Committee.
GIRLS CRICKET
Improvement in girl’s cricket in the 2011-12 season has been achieved due to the excellent work done by Maree Carr,
our Liaison Officer for Girls Cricket. A big thank you to Maree. Some of the achievements were as follows:
10 girls played for Manukau District
2 girls made the Auckland Squad
One represented Auckland U15
One girl made the Auckland Secondary School
One made the Northern District Secondary School
U12 girls WON the Auckland Championship grade
U14 girls came runners up
U13 AUSTRALIAN TOUR
The next U13 team has been selected to tour Australia in 2013. Fundraising will begin in earnest so please support their
fundraising ventures.
REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET
Once again Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club members have excelled in the Auckland District Tournaments over the
Christmas period. Congratulations again to those players who have gained representative honours.
HPCC QUAD TOURNAMENT
It has been long time coming and after being runner up to University, HPCC had a fantastic result in our very own HPCC
Quad Tournament. Congratulations to all those players who took part in this tournament.
COACHES AND VOLUNTEERS
Parents/Guardians – we value your contribution and help! We are a large club, over 700 junior players, and have a
fantastic group of enthusiastic volunteers, who coach and manage teams and the club could not function effectively
without their valuable contributions. A big thank you from all at the club to these tireless volunteers!
CONCLUSION
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my personal thanks to those members of the committee and wider club
who have contributed to the efficient running of the club junior section this last season.
Especially to Roland and Angela in the office, without whose efforts things would be that much harder to operate.
Thank you and best wishes to all for the coming season.
FINANCIAL REPORT
Further automating of the financial processes took place during this year with the change from MYOB to the on line
accounting system called “Xero”. This has provided the opportunity to link the registration, banking and accounting
systems.
During the year the auditors resigned as they were no longer doing audit work and only concentrating on the accounting
side of things. Following consultation with the previous auditors the Board authorised the go ahead for Tim England,
Accountant and Auditor, to take over the Club’s audit work. Tim agreed to take on the work at the same price as charged
by the previous auditors. The new auditors are satisfied that the accounting processes and procedures are carried out in
an efficient manner.
Summary of our trading year
Despite the tight controls over spending, the lack of income has resulted in the Club showing a loss of $50,855 after non
cash expenditure of depreciation $29,411.
Income showed a decrease (10.7%) on last year. This was mainly due to a reduction in the number of registered
members, less pavilion hire and less bar income. Our sponsors certainly assisted in keeping things going. Playing costs
and overhead expenses were up (8.3%) on last year, mainly due to a lack of funding previously supporting coaching
payments. Grant funding ($50,627) was down 19.1% on last year ($62,548).
The large accounts receivable figure on the Balance Sheet was a result of some outstanding sponsorship money, but
which had been collected at the time of writing this report.
Members will need to work together to increase cash flow in order to reduce the overdraft so that grant funding is no
longer relied upon as has been the case in the past. Increased member support with fundraising activities and
attendance on club nights is becoming a key to the future success of the Club and in the Club’s ability to reduce the large
overdraft.
On behalf of our committee I would like to thank the many people who have assisted our work during the year, in
particular our admin staff, volunteers and sponsors for their continued efforts. I look forward to the continued support in
the coming year.
INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’S REPORT
TO THE MEMBERS
OF THE HOWICK PAKURANGA CRICKET CLUB INCORPORATED.
REPORT ON THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
We have audited the financial statements of Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club Incorporated which comprise
the statement of financial position as at 31 March 2012, the statement of movement in equity and the
statement of financial performance for the year ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and
other explanatory information.
THE BOARD’S RESPONSIBILITIES
The Board is responsible for the preparation of financial statements in accordance with generally accepted
accounting in New Zealand and that give a true and fair view of the matters to which they relate, and for
such internal control as the Board determine is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements
that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
AUDITOR”S RESPONSIBILITIES
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit.
We conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing (New Zealand). Those
standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain
reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the
financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of
the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those
risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation of financial
statements that give a true and fair view of the matters to which they relate in order to design audit
procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the
effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of the
accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates, as well as evaluating the
presentation of the financial statements.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our
opinion.
Other than in our capacity as auditor we have no relationship with, or interests in, the Club.
28
QUALIFIED OPINION
In forming our opinion regarding these financial statements the following material issue has impacted on our
opinion:
• In common with similar organisations, control over revenues (including the bar operation) prior
to being recorded is limited, and there are no practical audit procedures to determine the effect
of this limited control;
In respect of this issue we have not obtained all the information and explanations that we required, and
therefore in our opinion, except for any adjustments that might have been found to be necessary had we been
able to obtain sufficient evidence concerning the revenues prior to being recorded,
the financial statements, as attached -
• comply with generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand;
• give a true and fair view of the financial position of Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club
Incorporated as at 31 March 2012 and its financial performance for the year ended on that date.
REPORT ON OTHER LEGAL AND REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
We have obtained all the information and explanations we have required.
In our opinion proper accounting records have been kept by Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club Incorporated as
far as appears from our examination of those records.
