PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
The motto of St Luke’s …One School For Life is truly captured in this edition of The St Luke’s Way. The Early Learning Centre was
a hub of activity at the end of the year as students graduated into Pre-prep or even into “big school”, leaving the ELC behind. The
Primary Celebration Evening was, as always, a showcase of the many talents of the Primary students. The Year 6 Race Day not only
captured the imagination of those present but allowed the generous sponsors a chance to join in the fun of cross curriculum learning
at school.
The end of any year brings about many mixed emotions for the Senior students. Many were sad to be leaving the safety of the school
environment and the friendships that they have relied on over the years. 2010 will mean starting new adventures and challenges for
most of the students which is an exciting time for them. As they presented so maturely at the Senior Formal and Year 12 Farewell, I
was left in no doubt they are ready for the next step in their lives. In addition, I congratulate the 2009 Year 12 on their excellent OP
results, which will have a feature in next term’s edition.
Term 4 also gave us an opportunity to acknowledge the wonderful support we get from our many volunteers. The Volunteers’ Morning
Tea was well supported; and again I thank the many people that donate their time, energy and expertise to St Luke’s.
There always appears to be a charity being supported by the students and families of the School. Last term the Pink Ribbon Afternoon
Tea was blessed with beautiful weather, decorations, guest speakers and models. We collected for the Christ Church Pantry Appeal,
donating a utility load of groceries to those in need at Christmas. We were also able to acknowledge those students that undertook a
Service activity during 2009 at the annual Service Assembly. We were not able to acknowledge the wonderful support the parents give
their children in these pursuits; however, I assure you it is noted and appreciated.
The list of activities at St Luke’s appears endless. A picture says a thousand words, so enjoy the Summer Edition of The St Luke’s Way.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas...
In the spirit of Christmas giving, our students continued with the School’s traditional Pantry Appeal for 2009.
Students in each class gathered contributions of non-perishable food items to support Christ Church’s emergency
food supply. Each week in Bundaberg, people who are struggling to afford the basic cost of living have the
opportunity to receive a food care package from the Christ Church Parish. This is especially prevalent around
Christmas time when the staff at the Parish see an increase in people in need of emergency food. Together with
the contributions from the St Luke’s Pantry Appeal, the staff at Christ Church distribute approximately 20 care
packages a week to those in need. Thanks to the generous support of our students, their families and friends,
a lot of people and families who would otherwise have a bleak Christmas were able to enjoy some treats. At the
final Primary Assembly for 2009, Father Iain Furby awarded the Oates Family Shield to Year 6F who gathered
the most contributions for the Pantry Appeal. Well done!
Memories of
Friends
by Julie Buckle
We hear the bell, we’re already late for class
What’s our excuse? Think of one fast!
Here comes a teacher, quick where’s our hats?
Guess it’s only ten papers, who cares about that?
Not long left now, we’re almost here
There’s one thing I’ll always remember
The memories of friends last a lifetime
Tears shed, laughter spread
Together we can shine
I will always keep close to my heart
The memories, the memories of friends.
Some say that teachers are so strict at school
But where would we be without their care and rules?
St Luke’s you’ve given us standards to live by
And I know we’ll cherish them as we say goodbye.
Not long left now, we’re almost here
There’s one thing I’ll always remember
The memories of friends last a lifetime
Tears shed, laughter spread
Together we can shine
I will always keep close to my heart
The memories, the memories of friends.
I will always keep close to my heart
The memories, the memories of friends.
THESTLUKE’SWAY Summer Edition | 2009
And they’re off!
Preparations for the Year 6 Race
Day started weeks before the
actual event which was held at the
Lohse Racecourse on Monday 30
November.
Students secured sponsorship
from the local community and
on the day proudly displayed
corporate signage with some
jockeys adding company logos to
their “racing silks”.
After a string of heats it was time for the final
showdown. Jockeys jostled for the best position
on the field and nervously awaited the start of the
race. With Mr Farthing’s expert commentating
ringing in their ears, the jockeys gave it their all.
In the end, it was a photo finish with Crafty, ridden
by Jaren Peterson, winning by a nose. Crafty
was sponsored by Craft Rental. The horse had
an exceptional training and preparation team of
Jaren and Ryan Caville.
The sponsors were invited to compete in a
“friendly” event at the conclusion of the Race
Day. However, competition rivalry
seemed utmost in the sponsors’ minds
as they prepared for the start. These
inexperienced riders were buoyed by the
appreciative crowd and took whatever
advantage they could in order to reach the
line first. Mr Paul Pike riding Wedgewood
was declared the overall winner.
As the stands slowly cleared, safety
equipment, bridles and saddles were
put away and horses were rubbed down,
jockeys were heard to declare that the
2009 Year 6 Race Day was the best yet!
Volunteers are paid in six
figures...S-M-I-L-E-S
Gayla LeMaire
Volunteering and participation by our School
community play an important part in enhancing
the daily life of our School.
Our volunteers work hard at supporting
many areas in the School such as the
Library, Tuckshop, classrooms, sports and
administration areas... the list is endless!
They help when asked and, more importantly,
even when they are not!
St Luke’s is a better place thanks to the tireless
efforts of the volunteers working throughout the
school year and it is with sincere appreciation
that we said a formal “thank you” to our friends
at a morning tea at the end of Term 4.
Your support, assistance and friendship have
helped make 2009 such a successful year.
Thank you
Farewell from the
Primary School
Students in Year 6 were
farewelled from the Primary
School at a special Liturgy
on Tuesday 1 December.
Family and friends proudly
surrounded the students as the
Head of Primary encouraged
them to recommit themselves
to the School’s ethos of Faith,
Performance and Honour as
they enter the Middle School
and a new stage of their lives.
The celebrations were brought
to a close with a special
blessing for each student.
Congratulations Year 6, and
we look forward to seeing you
in the Middle School!
Middle School Exodus Days
Exodus means “a journey by a large group”. At St Luke’s
it signifies the journey that our students have been on
during 2009 and reflects on the individual and group
growth in that time. It also involves setting goals for 2010.
The final Year 9 boys’ class was involved in the Rock and
Water Program and the feedback from the students was
inspiring and very encouraging. We certainly have some
outstanding young men coming through the School.
The Year 9 girls learnt some self-defence with ASP
Taekwondo and Martial Arts Academy. Miss Nicolo
worked with these girls, and she was very impressed with
how seriously they got involved in the activities and how
spirited they were in throwing each other around! We will
certainly conduct these workshops again in 2010.
We also had a visit from Mark Farrell from the Spinal
Education Awareness Team. He gave a stirring address to
the Middle School regarding risk and the consequences
of acting before thinking. This presentation was quite
moving, and many students asked questions well after the
lunch bell had sounded. This is always a good indicator
of interest level and a timely message just prior to the
holidays.
The highlight during Exodus week was the last two days
of the semester. The Middle School Leadership Building
Day which involved all Year 8 2010 leaders and 2009 Year
9 leaders working on leadership-building strategies. It was
excellent to see that the students worked well together
and a big thank you goes to Father Andrew, Ms Deer, Mr
Collyer, Mr Dalla Rizza, Mr Lynagh and Mr Kersnovske.
THESTLUKE’SWAY Summer Edition | 2009
The final day activities were organised by the Middle
School Leaders with all students in Year 7 to 9 involved.
This day was a lot of fun and displayed just how much the
students had grown in 2009.
Pink Ribbon Afternoon Tea
Close to 400 ladies (and a few gentlemen) converged
on the Multi-purpose Centre in late October for the
annual Pink Ribbon Afternoon Tea. Guests were
greeted on arrival by the beautiful sounds of our
Senior Strings and were seated amongst a sea of
flowers, tea, champagne and delicious nibblies.
Mrs Di Goggi was an excellent choice to MC the event
and kept the afternoon running with lighthearted
banter. We heard an inspiring story of the ongoing
struggle and challenge of breast cancer survivor
and St Luke’s mum Mrs Fiona Nixon. Mrs Dianne
Schneider spoke about the free community service
program “Look Good, Feel Better”, which is dedicated
to helping women undergoing treatment for cancer by
helping them manage the appearance-related side
effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, thereby
helping to restore their appearance and self image. Dr
James Gaffield explained the plastic surgery options
available to women who have undergone a full or part
breast removal.
As is tradition, the afternoon concluded with a
fashion parade with clothing from Avanti Collections
and Innstyle Mensland being modelled by Year 12
students and staff members.
Congratulations goes to the committee of Year 12
mothers who organized such a successful afternoon.
Our thanks must also go to the many supporters who
donated prizes to the Raffle and Silent Auction.
Congratulations to
Old Saints Shannon
Mobbs (Class of
2006) and Kate
Nalder who recently
announced their
engagement!
Old Saint Oliver Squires (Class of 2001) recently
visited the School to talk to students from Years
8 to 10 as part of his role as a Youth Science
Ambassador for ATSE (Australian Academy
of Technological Sciences and Engineering).
Part of Oliver’s task as an Ambassador is to
visit various high schools around Queensland
and talk about the role of science and new
technologies in everyday life (for example, the
development of new computers and medical
devices) and the different jobs in Science.
Oliver is currently completing a Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) in Chemistry at the University
of Queensland and has been extremely
fortunate to travel across the world (North and
South America and as well as Europe) to attend
conferences and workshops.
THESTLUKE’SWAY Summer Edition | 2009
Oliver plans to travel to London in February
2010 to represent Australia at the world’s
largest youth summit (One Young World) to
discuss global issues such as climate change
and poverty.
Oliver’s advice to the students of St Luke’s is
this: aim high in life, do not let anything hold you
back, if you want it bad enough and work hard
enough – you can achieve anything!
