University of New England is one of only five private universities in the United States
with a comprehensive health education mission, including a medical school,
pharmacy, dental hygiene and allied health programs.
UNE educates more health care professionals than any institution of higher learning
in Maine — more than 800 per year. In the last 10 years, 40 percent of graduates from
UNE’s health programs remain in Maine, significantly contributing to Maine’s
health care work force… and its economy.

Since its founding in 1978, the University of New England
College of Osteopathic Medicine has graduated over 2,300
physician alumni and had an extraordinary impact on the
health care of Maine, New England, and the nation. Of all
licensed physicians in Maine, more have graduated from
UNECOM than any other medical school in the country.

The Osteopathic Philosophy –
Whole Person, Whole Patient
Osteopathic medicine is a distinctive branch
of medicine, developed in the late 1800s by an
American frontier doctor, Andrew Taylor Still, who
approached the treatment of the patient from an
aspect of complete unity. The principles he set forth
– which emphasize the interdependence of structure
and function in the body – continue to guide the
profession today.
UNE medical school applicants are expected to possess
an outstanding academic record and scholastic
ability, leadership skills, and experience with health
care and human services. In addition, they should
demonstrate a genuine interest in practicing primary
care, practicing in New England, and/or working in
underserved communities.
Our students come from around the nation and
the world, but in keeping with the mission of the
institution, most are from New England. Our program
is highly competitive. From the 3,380
applications received for the class of 2013, we
matriculated a class of 124 students.
UNE Students Excel
The College’s clinical campus network and academic
affiliations with community-based hospital
systems throughout the Northeast provide our
medical students with a patient-centered primary
care model for education.
Graduates of the UNE College of Osteopathic
Medicine enter highly competitive residency programs
throughout the United States, including the
Lahey Clinic Medical Center, Harvard/Spaulding
Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston University Medical
Center, Maine Medical Center, and many others.
Although more than 60 percent of our graduates
pursue training in the primary care fields of family
medicine, internal medicine, or pediatrics, other
graduates pursue training in specialties such as
anesthesiology, radiology, neurology, psychiatry, or
general surgery, to name a few.
Our students are required to pass the COMLEX-
USA (Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical
Licensure Examination) board examinations
prior to both clinical rotations and graduation.
For the 2008–2009 academic year, the overall pass
rate for UNE students taking COMLEX-USA Level
1 was the third highest in the profession.
The UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine’s innovative
Patient-First Curriculum focuses on creating outstanding
health care leaders who advance primary care and
community health. Medical students begin with oncampus
state-of-the-art learning laboratories for clinical
skills, anatomy, and osteopathic manipulative medicine,
and later experience core clinical rotations at satellite
campuses at numerous hospitals and medical centers
throughout Maine and the Northeast.
The substantial shortage of primary care physicians
nationwide is more significant in underserved areas
and among vulnerable populations. Through a partnership
with the Maine Area Health Education Center
(AHEC) Network, headquartered on the UNE campus,
the UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine reinforces its
commitment to rural primary care by requiring clinical
training for students in rural and underserved areas.
In addition, UNECOM is home to the Coastal Healthy
Communities Coalition, a Healthy Maine Partnership
that spearheads community outreach education and
activities to promote tobacco prevention/cessation, substance
abuse prevention, physical activity and nutrition.
To advance their medical studies, students are encouraged
to participate in a number of interdisciplinary
research and scholarship opportunities. The College
of Osteopathic Medicine participates in collaborative
research with the UNE Center for Excellence in the
Neurosciences and the UNE Center for Community and
Public Health. UNE medical students may work with
