Twelve Angry Men
Sep 21, Jan 19 10.30am
This classic film starring Henry Fonda joins the Leaving Cert
Comparative Study for 2007. Despite our familiarity with legal
dramas, this film still has the power to provoke us into thinking
about the nature of justice. Director Sidney Lumet gets behind
each member of the jury as they debate and weigh up the
evidence available on this the ‘hottest day of the year’. The
claustrophobic atmosphere is heightened by the director’s use
of different lenses so that the backgrounds seem to close in on
the characters.
Les Choristes/The Chorus
Oct 4, 5, Jan 12 10.30 am
Directed by Christophe Barratier and set in 1949, Les
Choristes tells the story of Clément Mathieu (Gérard Jugnot),
an unemployed music teacher who is hired as a supervisor in a
boarding school for difficult boys. The school is run by
authoritarian director Rachin, whose methods are repressive
and brutal. At first Mathieu is unable to keep the boys under
control. But life at the school improves dramatically when he
introduces the boys to the magic of singing...
On Christmas Eve 1914, the first Christmas of the First World
War, soldiers from opposing sides called a temporary truce.
They met in no-man’s land between the trenches, played
football, exchanged mementoes, and the next day returned to
war. This new drama, based on these true-life events, centres
on the French, Scottish and German trenches. A French
lieutenant, an Anglican priest, a tenor, a soprano and singing
partner are about to experience this momentous event.
Life is Beautiful
Nov 8th 10.30 am
Roberto Benigni’s award-winning
film tells the story of Guido, a
clownish peasant working as a
waiter in northern Italy. The first
half of the film focuses on family
life, with his wife Dora and their
small son Giosué. The action
then moves to 1944 and
dramatically shifts in tone and
direction, as the Nazis invade
their world. When father and son
are arrested and taken to a
concentration camp, Guido
characteristically uses humour to
distract the boy from their situation, turning their internment
into a game. The film went on to win three Academy Awards,
including one for Benigni as Best Actor.
Howl’s Moving Castle
Oct 11, 20 10.30 am
In this follow-up to his wonderful Spirited Away, animation
master Hayao Miyazaki once again brings us a brave heroine
and her adventures in strange and marvellous surroundings.
Adapted from a children’s fantasy novel by Diane Wynne Jones,
it begins with 18-year-old hat-making Sophie who is transformed
into a grey haired 90-year-old. She discovers a new zeal for
adventure and joins the moving house of wizard Howl, an
amazing invention of turrets and corridors that rumbles across
the landscape between two warring kingdoms. The film’s
observations on the power of ageing and the futility of war do
not detract from its magic and sheer originality which keep us
engaged throughout.
Oct 25, Nov 9 10.30 am
The highly watchable
debut feature from Jacob
Aaron Estes takes an
original look at the
subject of bullying, a
frequent topic in comingof-age
stories. George is
a high school bully who
beats up Sam (Rory
Culkin). Sam in turn tells
his older brother, Rocky,
and he hatches a plan
with his friends to take George out in a boat and exact revenge.
The film avoids moralising and also makes the viewer question
his/her own responses to the increasingly violent situation in
which the young people find themselves. Recalling Stand by Me
or Lord of the Flies, the atmosphere seems at first idyllic and
tranquil, but this simply belies the cruelty that is waiting to
happen.
Oliver Hirschbiegel’s film about Hitler’s last few days in the
bunker makes for controversial but gripping viewing. Based on
two sources – Inside Hitler’s Bunker by historian Joachim Fest
and Until the Final Hour by Hitler’s secretary, Traudl Junge – the
film depicts the dictator, stricken with Parkinson’s disease and
screaming at his generals, while the viewer is aware that
outside the Allies are closing in. Remarkable for the central
performance by Bruno Ganz as the Führer, critics have
commented on the film’s apparent humanisation of the man
and its failure to have a coherent political standpoint. Yet
despite these concerns, the film is immensely powerful right
up to the end, when Traudl Junge appears in a documentary
made before she died.
Two young Czech filmmakers explore the impact of marketing
through this provocative documentary in which hundreds of
people in Prague attend the opening of a new hypermarket,
Czech Dream. But in fact, there actually is no shop behind the
hoarding, and the two filmmakers, transformed into smooth
talking managers, have run an entirely fraudulent advertising
campaign, with money from a government grant to make the
film. This is a funny and disconcerting analysis of the world of
contemporary media manipulation, of particular interest to
students of Business and Enterprise.
Rock School
Jan 17, 31 10.30 am
The loud, brash central character in this documentary is one Paul
Green, founder of the Paul Green Rock School. He has made it his
mission to teach youngsters how to be rock musicians, and his
teaching methods are unorthodox to say the least. He regularly
screams and shouts at his students, sometimes reducing them to
tears – but somehow this obnoxious, hugely egotistical man also
manages to inspire them.
Interviews with his students reveal their own complex,
sometimes difficult home lives, and show how important the school
has been to them. And even if rock music is not your preferred
music genre, the students' terrific final performance at a Frank
Zappa tribute festival in Germany reveals them as genuinely
talented musicians.
From the writer (Pearse Elliott) and director (Paddy
Breathnach) of Man about Dog, comes this endearing new film,
set against the post ceasefire political climate. Young Donal
lives in Belfast with his mother, Kate, and works after school
for Good Joe, a local greyhound trainer. Donal persuades Joe
to let him keep a greyhound, The Mighty Celt, if he can train it
to win three successive races.
Complications arise with the return of a mysterious man, O,
from Kate’s past, while at the kennels the boy becomes aware
that smuggling is going on. The young actor playing Donal is
wonderfully mischievous. Gillian Anderson (Kate) and Robert
Carlyle (O) are very convincing as the concerned adults trying
to come to terms with their past.
This poignant new film from
acclaimed photographer
Perry Ogden features
largely unprofessional
actors. Presenting an
unflinching portrait of a
poverty-stricken,
marginalised community
living in a modern,
the story of Winnie, a 10-
adaptation of the classic Dickens tale. Director Roman
Polanski re-imagines Charles Dickens’ story of a young orphan
The Merchant of Venice
Continuing our tour of this accomplished screen revival
of Shakespeare’s play in which Al Pacino shines as Shylock.
Set in 16th century Venice, the film makes its point of view
clear from the outset, with a written account of the situation
of Jews during this time, and the origin of the word ‘ghetto’. In
the opening sequence we see a priest preaching against Jews
from a boat, Antonio (Jeremy Irons) spits on Shylock the
moneylender, and a Jew is thrown to his death in the canal.
A smash hit in Australia on its release in 2000, The Dish is a
charming comedy that portrays scientists as heroes. Starring
Sam Neill, the film tells the story of a team of scientists and
the role they played in broadcasting the first TV pictures of the
historic Apollo 11 moon landing to the rest of the world. The
eponymous ‘dish’ is Australia’s largest satellite receiving dish,
located in the small town of Parkes, New South Wales.
humourless American from NASA, and the self-deprecating
Aussies – but when a technical hitch threatens to black out
their pictures, the scientists put aside their differences and
combine forces to save the day.
From the makers of Microcosmos and Winged Migration, this
new, visually stunning documentary explores the story of the
universe from its beginnings and beyond. It shows how the
Earth’s first inhabitants lived in water, then on land, and
includes powerful, memorable images of the wonders of
creation, including boiling lava, thunderstorms at sea, and a
snake eating an egg three times its size.
Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria
the Hippo live happily at New York Zoo. But when Marty
discovers that a group of plotting penguins is planning an
escape to ‘the wild’ he decides to do the same – even though
he has no idea what to expect. Eventually, after some hilarious
misadventures, all four end up on the island of Madagascar.
Alex, the most reluctant escapee, is desperate to get back
to the zoo, but finds that his natural hunting instincts are
beginning to surface – and he begins to view his best friend
Marty as a tasty dinner! The chase is on to get back to New
York and the safety and comfort of the zoo.
March of the Penguins
Dec 16, 21 10.30 am
This fascinating film charts the year-long journey of Emperor
Penguins in Antarctica. Each year, thousands of emperor
penguins travel hundreds of miles across Antarctic ice to
breed, braving sub-zero temperatures and other dangers.
After the penguins mate the female lays an egg and returns to
the water to feed while the male keeps the egg warm. By the
time the female returns months later, the chick is hatched –
and then it is the male’s turn to return to the water. But nature
does not always go to plan – and sadly, some of the eggs fail
to hatch. The penguins’ epic struggle to survive continues.
Film Classification Event
Nov 30 10.30 am
Do you think the classification of films affect your rights as a
citizen? Citizenship issues are intrinsically linked to the
portrayal of everyday lives of people through film.
For the 2005 European Year of Citizenship through
Education, students and their teachers are being offered the
opportunity to meet with members of the Irish Film
Classification Office (www.ifco.ie) at a special IFI Education
event. Following a screening of a previously unreleased film,
students will engage in discussion on the process of
classifying the film and how the principles of classification are
related to the first goal of the National Children’s Strategy.
This is a FREE event but booking is essential through IFI.
