Note that Nunavut does not have
a breast screening mammography
program.
It is clear from the furor aroused
in the United States that the
recommendations of the U.S.
Preventive Services Task Force were
highly controversial. According to
WebMD Health News 1 , “leading
medical groups…immediately
announced their own guidelines had
not changed. The American Cancer
Society reiterated its guideline for
annual screening mammography
for all women beginning at age 40,”
stating that it had reviewed virtually
the same data and concluded that
“the lifesaving benefits of screening
outweigh any potential harms.’’ In
addition, the American College of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists
(ACOG) continues to recommend
regular screening mammograms
every one to two years for women
in their 40s, annual screening for
women 50 and older, and Breast
Self-Examination (BSE).
We encourage you to work with the
Canadian Breast Cancer Network to
promote mammography screening
from age 40 for all women in
Canada. •
