Jadzia Romaniec, Task Force Liaison Officer and Zakia Sanaye, Project Coordinator of the Breast Cancer Survivor to Financial Survivor Project Breast Cancer Survivor to Financial Survivor is the newest handbook being developed by the Canadian Breast Cancer Network. Breast cancer patients/survivors often find that they have to make difficult financial decisions while dealing with the stress of having cancer, the costs associated with receiving treatment and employment income reduction. The booklet gives breast cancer survivors some financial decisionmaking tools and options, new ways to evaluate and use their own assets, and uncovers some little-known resources and reviews best ways to negotiate their way through the social benefits and disability systems. Breast Cancer Survivors to Financial Survivors looks at how to manage assets such as RRSPs, whether to borrow funds, mortgage or sell a house, cash in insurance policies, try to eventually obtain re-training, or obtain part-time work either in their preexisting workplace or somewhere new. Information is also being compiled about assistance with transportation, prosthetics, childcare costs and other help from local agencies. The handbook includes information about decision-making processes, planning materials and financial alternatives and choices compiled from a volunteer Task Force of financial and related industry experts. A Project Advisory Committee of breast cancer survivors is reviewing the material. Many of the contributors have had firsthand experience with the financial difficulties related to a breast cancer diagnosis. If you, or anyone you know, have stories or contributions about creative financial survivorship, please do let us know! Your solutions can be very helpful to others in treatment or survivors. The manual will be distributed through CBCN’s 225 partner and member groups and on the CBCN website and through the CBCN national office. Publication is expected in February 2010. It is clear from the furor aroused in the United States that the recommendations of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force were highly controversial. According to WebMD Health News 1 , “leading medical groups…immediately announced their own guidelines had not changed. The American Cancer Society reiterated its guideline for annual screening mammography for all women beginning at age 40,” stating that it had reviewed virtually the same data and concluded that “the lifesaving benefits of screening outweigh any potential harms.’’ In addition, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) continues to recommend regular screening mammograms every one to two years for women in their 40s, annual screening for women 50 and older, and Breast Self-Examination (BSE).
