Welcome Back Riverhawks
August 30 welcomed over 700 freshmen from Ochoa, McLoughlin
and Stevens Middle Schools to their first day of high school.
Freshmen were given a standing ovation from CHS staff as they
entered the building. Students attended a morning orientation
assembly in the gym and later were escorted around the campus
by Link Crew Leaders. Freshmen were able to have the campus
to themselves to get familiar with their new surroundings and
classes.
The following day, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors joined the
Freshmen. All the classrooms are filled this year with an enrollment
of over 2050 students. All students were given blue and
silver beads to wear as they entered the building to start the
school spirit for the year.
Some fun at the pep assembly-who are these guys?
Chiawana—Gravel Pit Champions
September 10, 2010 marked another
historic event. The first ―Gravel Pit
Championship” was played between
the Chiawana Riverhawks and the
Pasco Bulldogs. It was a Friday night
to remember as over 7,000 Pasco
fans turned out to watch this cross
town rivalry. Even though it was not a
“The Rock”
league game, it was probably “the
game” of the year. What was at stake? Who would take home
“The Rock?‖ Pasco Pride was in the air!
Earlier in the day, Chiawana held it’s first pep assembly of the
year, with each class showing their school spirit. White t-shirts
were made just for the game and Chiawana students and staff
marched en masse into the stadium. It was a sight to see, a sea
of white on one side and a sea of purple on the other side. In the
end, it was a Riverhawk victory (37-14) and “The Rock” was
brought home to Chiawana. The sportsmanship was exemplary
on both sides between the players and the fans.
Great job Riverhawks!
The “FISH”
Philosophy
Chiawana is continuing to
develop a culture that builds
relationships and holds students and staff accountable
for high standards. The “FISH” Philosophy
will continue to be a top priority and guideline:
Be There: Be physically and emotionally
present for people, especially when they
need you. It’s a powerful message of respect
that strengthens relationships.
Play: Constantly look for ways to be creative
and have fun while working. Let your
curiosity and lightheartedness fuel your
enthusiasm.
Make Their Day: Find special ways to
connect with everyone you encounter, for
no other reason than to brighten their day.
Choose Your Attitude: No matter the
situation, take responsibility for consciously
choosing how you want to show up in the
world.
With us all working together to embrace these four
practices, think about what we can do—Chiawana
High School will be world class!
Chiawana Mosaic and Glass Mural Dedicated
“Seeing Blue” is a great art piece commissioned
by Mike Mandel. The art consists of
four porcelain and glass mosaic murals
measuring 13’ high by 18’3‖ wide. They are
located in the hallway leading into the student
mall. The mural, an official part of the
State Art Collection, was provided by the
Washington State Arts Commission, in
partnership with Pasco School District.
“The funds for the artwork are provided
by the State for newly constructed
schools, or schools with constructed
additions,” says Superintendent Saundra
Hill. “The school was provided with
funds for the state-mandated project,
with strict guidelines about how the
money could be spent.” Chiawana Principal,
Teri Kessie, served on the committee
and worked closely with the Washington
State Arts Commission throughout the process
to make sure Chiawana students also
had a voice in the process. “The first
Pasco High School building is part of the
design to recognize PHS as part of the
Chiawana legacy,” says Kessie. “Blue is
an important identifying color for Chiawana,
and the motto „See Blue In All You
Do‟ guides students to understand their
responsibility to develop a moral and
ethical grounding and to have the courage
to achieve.”
This massive mural contains images of CHS
students, Danielle Loving, Kathryn
Goatcher, Macario Trevino, Duyen Tran
and Dennis Farrell. They are depicted at
work and play, as well as the Blue Bridge.
The dedication ceremony preceded Chiawana’s
Open House on September 21.
Hawk Time
CHS students have a block of time four days a
week called Hawk Time. This 30-minute time period
is built
into their
schedules
and enables
students to
catch up on
missed as-
signments,
homework,
lab work, etc.
This time is very valuable for students if they use it
to their advantage. Every student must be in a
designated location. It is not a social time for
students and they are not allowed off campus or
roaming the halls.
A Note From the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Welcome back! I am excited about
our start to the new year. The roller
coaster ride we experienced in our first
year seems to have evened out and
we have had a much smoother start to
our year. I won’t say it has all been
perfect, but we are making progress
that way.
One of the things that we have tried to do is to develop a culture
where our kids choose to do the right thing, even in the face
of adversity, which is the meaning of our slogan, “See Blue in
All You Do.” I am continually amazed by our students as I
watch them do just that. I wanted to share a few examples with
you:
Link Crew Leaders, comprised of 75 juniors and seniors,
gave up two days of their summer vacation to prepare
for our freshmen day and welcomed the new
Hawks into the nest.
Leadership students planned an awesome assembly
before the Pasco High game that encouraged positive
support for our team rather than negativity toward the
opposing team.
When we ran out of t-shirts before the last student in line
got one, a student leader took his shirt off and gave it to
the student, so that all kids who waited in the two hour
line could have one.
Chiawana High School won first place at the Alzheimer‟s
Walk for raising the most money out of any
other school. Stop by and check out the four foot traveling
trophy in the Student Athletic and Activity Center.
With all the cynicism that is portrayed in the media about
―teenagers today,‖ I wanted you to know that many Chiawana
Riverhawks are stepping up to the plate to do the right thing.
You can be very proud of your kids!
Each
student
was given
a Chiawana
Student Handbook at the
beginning of the school year.
important information that you
Alzheimer‟s Awareness Week
September 13-17
“Alzheimer‟s Awareness Week” was sponsored by CHS
Leadership students. Their mission was to bring awareness
to this disease that affects 5.3 million people. They were also
in competition with Pasco High School. CHS once again
brought home the trophy for raising the most funds, over
$1,400. Way to go Riverhawks!
CHS Marching Band Takes 8 th Place
Dozens of bands marched into Edgar Brown Stadium
on Saturday, October 2 to participate in the 29th annual
Cavalcade of Bands Festival. High school
marching bands from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and
Montana competed for top honors. This competition is one of the premier
marching band competitions in the Northwest.
The pageantry displayed by each band is spectacular to see and the
competition is fierce. At the end of the day (a long day) Chiawana‟s
Marching Band brought home 2 nd place honors in their division and
8 th place overall. In only its first year, the Riverhawks are beating many
strong and established marching band programs. Our students deserve
all the credit because of their incredible work ethic by putting in countless
hours of rehearsals and sectional rehearsals.
Congratulations Riverhawk Marching Band!
Red Ribbon Week
October 25-29
29
Red Ribbon Week is a nationally recognized drug-free campaign
hosted by students in schools across the country. During this campaign,
students are given the opportunity to learn about the harmful
effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use through daily anti-drug
awareness activities and education. On the last day of this week-long
campaign, students are asked to make a pledge and pin a red ribbon
to their clothing as an outward sign of their commitment. Will you
make a pledge to remain drug-free this year?
Get Involved! If you would like to join a “School-
Wide Prevention Group” and volunteer to help plan this year’s Red
Ribbon Week activities, please contact Lindsey Mott, Prevention/
Intervention Specialist, at 543-6786, x 5704 or e-mail
lmott@psd1.org. Imagine the positive impact you can make at
Chiawana by promoting a drug-free school!
CHS students and staff were all about “Seeing
Blue In All You Do,” the week of September 27-
October 1. “In the Wild” was the theme as students
and staff dressed up reflecting a different
theme each day. Competitions between the
classes started with decorating the halls. The
week culminated with a pep assembly and the
coronation of the Fall Ball Royalty. A standing
ovation by the whole student body and staff was
given to life skills royalty, Leanne Coburn and
Garrett Ossman, as they were crowned Duchess
and Duke of the Fall Ball. Congratulations to the
CHS Football team for their victory over Richland!
Parents, this is a reminder. Every
car parked on school property during
regular school hours must have a
plainly visible and valid Chiawana
need to fill out a form from the
Students must park in designated
We are trying to be good neighbors
so are asking that our students park
neighborhood homes.
