20 <strong>Shippensburg</strong> <strong>University</strong> Martin Luther King (MLK) Program MLK students successfully completed a book drive to benefit the library at Scotland School for Veterans Children in Scotland, PA. The students also participated in Project Linus and distributed blankets to critically ill youth at Pinnacle Health in Harrisburg, PA. Further, as they do every year, MLK student mentors facilitated a cultural Jeopardy game for young people at the university’s MLK celebrations. Finally, Natalie Walker, coordinator, and student mentors, Stephanie Coleman and Cristina Cintron, presented MLK: A Life Preserver for Success at the NACADA national conference in Baltimore, MD. Academic Support for Student Athletes During the fall <strong>of</strong> <strong>2007</strong>, the Student- Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) established a goal to raise $3,000 for the Make-A- Wish Foundation. Through the committee’s outstanding efforts the goal was exceeded. SAAC raised $4,500 through various fundraising events during the <strong>2007</strong>-08 academic year. <strong>Shippensburg</strong> <strong>University</strong>, through SAAC’s efforts, was ranked as the fifth highest Division II institution in the country to donate to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The <strong>Shippensburg</strong> <strong>University</strong> Student- Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in conjunction with Special Olympics hosted a Fun Meet on March 27, <strong>2008</strong>. The Fun Meet consisted <strong>of</strong> various swimming competitions between local Special Olympians and SU student-athletes. Over 250 individuals participated in the event including athletes, the pep band, cheerleaders, mascot, and campus and community members. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), along with fellow student-athletes, organized a community service project during the fall semester to raise funds for families in need throughout the local community. Each student-athlete contributed a minimum <strong>of</strong> one dollar and the total money raised was approximately $900. Proceeds were used to purchase items from the families “wish list.” Three families in need within the local community were supported through the project. Office <strong>of</strong> Disability <strong>Service</strong>s The director <strong>of</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> Disability <strong>Service</strong>s presented a workshop for the Autism Society <strong>of</strong> America. She also participated in a panel discussion at Highmark Blue Cross for employees <strong>of</strong> children with disabilities considering post secondary education. Further, she participated in the Disability Awareness College Night at Middletown High School and she attended seven high school or college transition meetings involving high school counselors, Office <strong>of</strong> Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors, Assistant Principals, teachers and other agencies. Conference Presentations Tom Gibbon, academic liaison, and Chad Bennett, program counselor for the Academic Success Program and Department <strong>of</strong> Academic <strong>Service</strong>s, presented their poster “Supervised Study Sessions for Developmental Students” at the 32nd <strong>Annual</strong> National Association for Developmental Education in Boston, March 29, <strong>2008</strong>. David Henriques, assistant dean <strong>of</strong> the School <strong>of</strong> Academic Programs and <strong>Service</strong>s, presented “Linking Placement Testing and Academic Advising” at the 18th <strong>Annual</strong> Accuplacer Conference in Fort Lauderdale. He also presented “Eureka: the power <strong>of</strong> placement testing and academic advising” at the 9th <strong>Annual</strong> National College Testing Association Conference September 6, <strong>2008</strong> Baltimore, MD. Dr. Stephen Wallace, coordinator <strong>of</strong> developmental education and advising development, presented “Being Undeclared May Be the Best Choice <strong>of</strong> a Major” at the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) <strong>Annual</strong> Conference; October 1-4, <strong>2008</strong> Chicago, IL. Dr. Stephen Wallace, coordinator <strong>of</strong> developmental education and advising development, Dr. Greg Ochoa, director <strong>of</strong> the Academic Success Program, and Dr. Beverly Wallace, assistant director for writing support, presented “Taking the At Risk Out <strong>of</strong> Summer Bridge Programs” at the Pennsylvania Association <strong>of</strong> Developmental Educators <strong>Annual</strong> Conference; March 19-20, <strong>2008</strong> Hershey, PA.
