• advocate for resource <strong>and</strong> energy efficiency <strong>and</strong> a shift from fossil<br />

fuel-based energy production to renewable energies; this implies<br />

that the churches themselves adopt appropriate policies;<br />

• encourage public engagement in the reduction of greenhouse gas<br />

emissions beyond the targets of the UNFCCC, <strong>and</strong> work with<br />

churches on adopting policies <strong>and</strong> programmes for peoples affected<br />

by the sea level rise;<br />

• strengthen the eco-justice movement that involves the wider<br />

ecumenical family.<br />

• Churches in rich <strong>and</strong> affluent societies should work for sustainable<br />

consumption <strong>and</strong> production patterns by adopting self-restraint <strong>and</strong><br />

simplicity in lifestyles <strong>and</strong> resistance to dominating patterns of<br />

consumerism.<br />

6.4.5. Public goods & services<br />

Churches <strong>and</strong> congregations are encouraged to:<br />

• join the global struggle against the privatization of public goods <strong>and</strong><br />

services; <strong>and</strong><br />

• actively defend the rights of countries <strong>and</strong> people to define <strong>and</strong> manage<br />

their own development.<br />

6.4.6. Life-giving agriculture<br />

Churches <strong>and</strong> congregations are called to:<br />

• ensure the use of church l<strong>and</strong> for life-giving farming;<br />

• build <strong>and</strong> promote a life-giving agriculture ecumenical forum;<br />

• oppose TRIPS <strong>and</strong> patenting of seeds <strong>and</strong> life forms;<br />

• ensure food sovereignty;<br />

• oppose the production of genetically modified organisms (GMOs);<br />

<strong>and</strong><br />

• promote organic farming <strong>and</strong> joining resistance movements against<br />

agro-business.<br />

6.4.7. Churches <strong>and</strong> the power of the empire<br />

• Especially churches are encouraged to analyze the convergence of the<br />

imperial powers <strong>and</strong> their military hegemony <strong>and</strong> economic<br />

domination.<br />
