announcement of the “new things” that God is doing, <strong>and</strong> surely that<br />

means that in our time <strong>and</strong> place, the church must be a community of<br />

alternatives: alternative visions, alternative spaces, alternative spirituality<br />

<strong>and</strong> alternative economic ideas <strong>and</strong> practices.<br />

The obvious pathway toward change is to start with people’s existing<br />

realities <strong>and</strong> truths, believing them to be empowering <strong>and</strong> containing the<br />

seeds of transformation. Ecumenical social thought <strong>and</strong> action has never<br />

presented a one-fits-all solution, but has rather insisted that people are<br />

the subjects of a common journey to life in dignity in just <strong>and</strong> sustainable<br />

communities. We are committed to lift up <strong>and</strong> practise existing alternatives<br />

- especially those emanating from the poor, women, Indigenous <strong>Peoples</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> other excluded peoples - <strong>and</strong> to foster new ones. Amidst death <strong>and</strong><br />

destruction, we witness a massive affirmation of life by movements of<br />

peoples.<br />

Mindful of the involvement of churches in the destruction of other cultures<br />

<strong>and</strong> people’s lives in the colonial past, churches can <strong>and</strong> should search for<br />

cooperation with <strong>and</strong> inspiration from others: any <strong>and</strong> all who are seeking<br />

life-giving alternatives. Indigenous <strong>Peoples</strong> have historically been at the<br />

frontline of a challenge to the colonization process that destroyed their<br />

ecological values <strong>and</strong> the practices that enabled them to live in just <strong>and</strong><br />

harmonious relationships with creation. Now, large populations are being<br />

victimized in the same way as the Indigenous <strong>Peoples</strong> in the past. Therefore,<br />

solidarity between the old <strong>and</strong> the new victims of this neo-colonization is<br />

crucial to resist <strong>and</strong> transform ongoing globalization.<br />

The Adivasis, Dalits <strong>and</strong> fisher folk of Orissa waged war against British<br />

colonialism as early as 1768. Today, in the post independence era, instead
